Equity benchmark indices tanked on Friday’s mid-trading witnessing maximum selling pressure as traders adopted a cautious tone amid the ongoing earnings season and foreign fund outflows.
Axis Bank’s financial results fell short of market expectations and seemed to have dragged the entire financial stocks lower.
After shedding over 650 pts, Sensex traded with a loss of 562.90 pts or 0.68 per cent at 81,696.34 as at 12.59 pm. Nifty 50 fell 156.95 pts or 0.63 per cent to 24,954.50.
Both the midcap and smallcap dropped 0.52 per cent and 0.59 per cent, respectively. Volatility index rose 2.20 per cent to 11.49.
Sectoral indices witnessed a broad-based decline with banking and financial leading the fall. The private sector bank index and financials declined over 1 per cent. Only media, metal and IT indices staged resilience amid the market slump.
Top gainers & losers today
Among the Sensex firms, Wipro traded with over 2 per cent gains on Q1 results. Tata Steel was up 1 per cent. HCL Tech, ONGC, IndusInd Bank and Infosys traded with marginal gains.
On the flip side, Axis Bank traded over 4 per cent lower after shedding 7 per cent in early trade. Shriram Finance, Bharat Electronics, HDFC Life, SBI Life, Grasim and Adani Ports depreciated 1-2 per cent.
RBL Bank, Kotak Mahindra, HDFC Bank and IDFC First Bank also traded in the negative range among the Nifty private bank index, with Axis Bank depreciating the most.
Only 968 stocks advanced and 1,796 declined of all the 2,849 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing.
Anand Rathi, Choice International, Dalmia Bharat, HDFC AMC, ITC Hotels, ixigo, Biocon and Bluejet were among the 60 stocks that hit a 52-week high today, while Jindal Worldwide and 16 others hit a 52-week low.
Electrotherm (India) and 52 other shares traded at its upper circuit.
Valiant Laboratories and Nirman Agri featured among 26 stocks that hit the lower circuit.
Midcap & smallcap movers today
Among the midcap segment, Tata Communications, NMDC, Persistent Systems, Patanjali and HDFC AMC traded in positive territory, while Bharat Dynamics, Cochin Shipyard, Max Health, Mazagon Dock and Policy Bazaar fell 2-4 per cent.
Of the smallcap index, Tribeni Turbine, Afcons, Godfrey Phillips, Poonawalla and Welspun Living gained 1-3 per cent, and Newgen Software, Data Patterns and BEML shed 3-6 per cent.
On the BSE, Hertiage Foods and Max Estates led the gainers with 6 per cent uptick. Meanwhile, Clean Science, Newgen, Alok Industries and Data Patterns slump 4-8 per cent.
