Alexander Sorloth targeted with online abuse after Norways FIFA World Cup 2026 exit

Norway striker Alexander Sorloth has become the latest high-profile footballer to endure a barrage of online abuse, including death threats and messages urging him to take his own life, following his country’s dramatic 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

The incident that sparked the backlash occurred in the 44th minute while Norway led 1-0. During a promising two-on-one counter-attack, Sorloth found himself with an unmarked Erling Haaland to his left. Instead of passing it to Haaland, Sorloth chose to shoot. England defender John Stones tracked back excellently to block the effort, defusing what could have been a match-killing second goal for Norway.

Norway Manager Solbakken Condemns Abuse

Norway manager Stale Solbakken condemned the abuse in a post-match press conference, describing it as “tragic” and “completely devoid of sense.” He revealed that Sorloth and his family had been targeted with extreme hostility and urged his players to stay off social media.

“It is tragic,” Solbakken told ‌a press conference in Miami.

“That is the world we live in. I tell the boys to stay away from social media, especially on days like this. There is ‌nothing more to say about it other than it is completely devoid of sense on every possible level,” he added.

Sorloth’s partner, Lena Selnes, shared screenshots on Instagram revealing a barrage ‌of hostile messages, including comments urging the striker to take his own life.

In the aftermath, the 30-year-old Sorloth addressed the controversial decision. The Atletico Madrid player  explained that England defender John Stones had closed down the passing lane to Haaland.

“The only thing I wanted to do in that situation was to pass to Erling. But it ‌felt like the pass wasn’t there, so I went to shoot,” Sorloth said.

Norway’s Run At FIFA World Cup 2026

Despite the disappointment of exiting at the quarter-final stage, Norway’s run represented a historic achievement for the national team, which had never previously advanced this far in the modern World Cup era.

Haaland and teammates had generated significant excitement throughout the tournament.

This is what dreams are made of: Reece James reflects on Englands FIFA WC 2026 journey ahead of Argentina semifinal

This is what dreams are made of: Reece James reflects on Englands FIFA WC 2026 journey ahead of Argentina semifinal

As England prepare to face Argentina, midfielder Reece James admitted that the Lions’s run to the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals is “what dreams are made of.”

Thomas Tuchel’s men battled their way past Norway in the quarter-finals on, coming from 1-0 down to win 2-1 after extra-time courtesy of Jude Bellingham’s brace. Andreas Schjelderup put Norway ahead in the first half when his delivery from the left flew across Jordan Pickford’s box and crashed off the far post before crossing the line.

Bellingham showed a moment of individual quality to pull England level before he prodded home from close range in extra time to complete the Three Lions’ comeback and put them into just their third World Cup semi-final since 1966.

James, who returned to action from the bench against Norway, played a key role in defence and midfield after recovering from a hamstring injury picked up earlier in the tournament. And after helping the Three Lions reach their fourth World Cup semi-final, James opened up on what their progress in North America means to him

“This is what dreams are made of,” James said on the latest episode of Lions’ Den Connected by EE. “Everyone from a little boy dreamt of playing in a World Cup and this is part of the process. To play in a semi-final against one of the best nations.. we’re delighted to be here.”

Asked whether he’s able to enjoy moments like Bellingham’s double against Norway by host Andrew Mensah, James added, “It’s difficult in games. You might get 10 seconds to enjoy the moment then it’s gone. As soon as yesterday’s game finished, the focus is forward now. We don’t look back. We have a new challenge in a few days and we’re preparing for that already.”

England will take on Argentina in the last four in Atlanta on Thursday, with the winners going on to face either France or Spain in Sunday’s showpiece final.

Argentina are the defending world champions, but James is confident he and his team-mates can deal with the pressure of facing Lionel Messi and Co on football’s biggest stage.

“It comes with experience. Higher stakes the game is, usually the more pressure. But at the end of the day, this is what we’ve been doing for 20/25 years; playing football. So the fundamentals are the same, but the prize is slightly different,” said James.

Lionel Messi on cusp of history, set to face England for first time at FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal

Lionel Messi on cusp of history, set to face England for first time at FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal

In what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches in World Cup history, defending champions Argentina will take on England in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta on Wednesday night.

For Lionel Messi, the clash carries extra significance: at 39 years old, the Argentine legend will finally face England for the first time in his storied senior international career.

A Historic First Encounter

Despite 205 caps for Argentina and countless battles against top nations, Messi has never lined up against England. The two football powerhouses have avoided each other at senior level throughout his era, making this World Cup showdown in Atlanta a long-overdue spectacle.

Messi himself described the occasion as “special.”

“It’s special because they’re a great team, a powerhouse, and it’s always nice to play a team like that, a match of this kind,” Messi told reporters after ‌Argentina’s 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Switzerland in extra time on Saturday.

Argentina’s Title Defense

Argentina advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals with a gritty 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland in Kansas City. Messi, though quieter by his standards against the Swiss, still provided an assist and continues to lead the tournament with eight goals.

Defending champions Argentina remain formidable, blending Messi’s genius with a solid squad featuring Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, and a resilient defense. Manager Lionel Scaloni’s side has shown the character of champions, overcoming challenges to keep their dream of back-to-back titles alive.

England’s Charge To The Last Four

England booked their place with a dramatic 2-1 extra-time win over Norway, inspired by Jude Bellingham. Under Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions have grown into the tournament, with Harry Kane leading the line and a midfield featuring Bellingham’s dynamism.

England will look to neutralize Messi through disciplined marking and exploit any gaps in Argentina’s midfield. Tuchel’s tactical acumen could prove key in containing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Messi’s Record-Breaking Campaign

At 39 years old, Lionel Messi is not just participating; he is driving Argentina’s title defense. During the group stage, Messi struck a brace against Austria to surpass Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record of 16 World Cup goals.

Messi now stands alone at the top of the mountain with 21 career World Cup goals. He is also the joint-top scorer of the 2026 tournament with 8 goals, locked in a fierce Golden Boot race with France’s Kylian Mbappe.

A place in the final awaits the winner, with either France or Spain lying in wait on the other side of the bracket. For Messi, this could be one of his last shots at World Cup glory. For England, it’s a chance to end Argentina’s reign and reach their first final since 1966.

The match kicks off at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, July 15. Global audiences are braced for a classic: tactical battles, individual brilliance, and the weight of history.

As Messi stands on the cusp of yet another milestone, one thing is certain: football fans around the world are in for an unforgettable night.

England announce playing XI for 1st ODI against India: Jacob Bethell to open, check full line-up

England announce playing XI for 1st ODI against India: Jacob Bethell to open, check full line-up

Batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell is set to open the batting alongside Ben Duckett as England announced their playing eleven for the opening One-day International (ODI) of the three-match series against India, to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday.

The match will also mark a momentous personal milestone for wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler, who will be making his 200th ODI appearance. Buttler, a vital cog in England’s white-ball set-up, made his 50-over international debut against Pakistan in Dubai back on February 21, 2012, and has amassed 5,515 runs so far at an average of 39.11, including hitting 11 centuries and 29 fifties.

The decision to elevate the young and dynamic Bethell, who has made 21 ODI appearances so far, to the top of the order signals England’s intention to find a stable opening partner for Duckett.

Interestingly, Bethell is all set to become Duckett’s fifth opening partner in recent times, following stints by Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Zak Crawley, and Rehan Ahmed. Harry Brook-led England have also opted for a spin-heavy bowling combination in Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid to stifle the robust Indian batting lineup, featuring the likes of captain Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul.

Jofra Archer, who had a good time in the 4-0 T20I series win, is back in the ODI set-up for the first time since November last year and will handle fast-bowling duties with Josh Tongue, which means there’s no place for Gus Atkinson. Following the series opener at Edgbaston, India and England will play further ODIs in Cardiff (July 16) and Lord’s (July 19).

England playing eleven: Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, Josh Tongue, and Adil Rashid
