Enjoyed it a lot, Especially Virat Bhai’: Ishan Kishan makes a baffling remark after embarrasing loss vs RCB by 6 wickets in IPL 2026 opener

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Ishan Kishan attributed his team’s six-wicket loss in their IPL 2026 opening match to a loss of momentum during a vital period of their innings. Despite Kishan’s own aggressive 80 runs off 38 deliveries, SRH struggled early on, collapsing to 29 for three during the initial six-over powerplay. While his efforts helped the team reach a total of 201 for nine, consistent wicket-falling hindered them from achieving the higher score necessary on a flat M Chinnaswamy Stadium surface.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully reached the target in 15.4 overs. Virat Kohli led the chase with a 69-ball 38, supported by Devdutt Padikkal’s rapid 61 off 26 balls.

Reflecting on the performance and the challenge of facing Kohli, Kishan stated:

“We did well after losing track, which gives a lot of confidence to us. You know, especially you have to give some credit to the batters as well, the way they batted, especially Virat bhai while chasing. It was very important to get his wicket as soon as possible. Otherwise, if he keeps on going, it’s hard to stop him.”

Looking Ahead

Kishan noted that while the team needs to ensure these errors are not repeated, he remained optimistic given it is the start of the tournament.

“We’ll have to work a little hard. It’s the first game and these mistakes are acceptable for now. We’ll be a little more cautious with the bowling, areas where we need to execute, and we might be stronger from this game.”

RCB’s Debut Success

RCB seamer Jacob Duffy made a significant impact in his debut, filling in for the injured Josh Hazlewood. Duffy claimed three wickets during his opening spell to stifle SRH early.

“Awesome, hell of a way to start the campaign. Great win. I am just keeping the big fellow’s (Hazlewood) seat warm. I just wanted to bowl the hard lengths, just keep the ball there. Even better that I got to walk off the field after seven overs. We talked about the lengths and stuff, what works here. Just build on what Josh did.”

Duffy also expressed relief at dismissing Abhishek Sharma, a player who has frequently challenged him in recent T20Is.

“I am sick of bowling to Abhishek for sure (jokes). Haven’t seen such bounce in India before as we saw here. But that was the case today. Rajat said you go and I happily obliged. When the ball is hard and new is the best time to bowl on this surface.”

Full Statement from Ishan Kishan

Regarding the match conditions and the team’s outlook, Kishan provided a comprehensive breakdown:

“I think definitely the wicket played well after the first 3 to 4 overs. You know, we lost a few early wickets, and we have to take care of that maybe next time because, looking at the wicket in the second innings, it was pretty much easier to bat on and the ball was coming on quite well. So yeah, we’ll have to be a little smart with the shot selection next time. But yeah, we did well after losing track, which gives a lot of confidence to us. You know, especially you have to give some credit to the batters as well, the way they batted, especially Virat Bhai while chasing. It’s very important to get his wicket as soon as possible. Otherwise, if he keeps on going, it’s hard to stop him. We’ll have to work a little hard. It’s the first game and these mistakes are acceptable for now. We’ll be a little more cautious with the bowling, areas where we need to execute, and we might be stronger from the next game. I actually enjoyed it a lot, you know, enjoyed every moment of it. It’s IPL, so sometimes nerves are there. But we’ll get better with this as a team. What else can I say about the captaincy? If we win the games coming ahead, it will be much easier for us going ahead in the tournament.”

‘I’ve put enough work physically…’: Virat Kohli opens up on batting rhythm after his match-winning knock in RCB vs SRH IPL 2026 match

‘I’ve put enough work physically…’: Virat Kohli opens up on batting rhythm after his match-winning knock in RCB vs SRH IPL 2026 match

Talismanic batter Virat Kohli said his recent ODI form played a crucial role in helping him maintain rhythm and momentum as he returned to T20 cricket with an unbeaten 69 and star in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s emphatic six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 opener at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

“It’s good to get back out there. You mentioned T20 cricket, the last game I played was the final last year, but I think the way I batted in the one-day series quite recently really helped me to stay in that same kind of momentum. I wasn’t playing shots that I don’t usually play.

“So I knew as long as I have the rhythm, and I’ve put enough work physically behind the scenes with my fitness, things should come together nicely. Tonight was another chance to start strong and build on this,” said Kohli to broadcasters at the conclusion of the game.

Kohli enthralled the RCB home crowd with an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls, laced with five fours and five sixes, as he registered his 64th IPL fifty and became the first batter in IPL history to cross 4000 runs in chases.

Reflecting on the breaks he has due to playing only ODIs for India, Kohli stated, “The kind of scheduling that we’ve had over the last 15 years and the amount of cricket I’ve played, for me, there was always a risk of getting burnt out rather than being undercooked. So these breaks help me mentally. I stay fresh and excited.

“Whenever I come back to play, it’s 120 percent. I’m not coming back underprepared. In fact, the extra rest helps me mentally freshen up. As long as you’re physically fit and mentally excited, both those things come together nicely. Then you’re able to contribute to the team’s cause, and that’s what you want to do as a player. You don’t want to just hold on to a spot; you want to keep performing and keep putting in the work for the team.”

Kohli also hailed Devdutt Padikkal’s rollicking 61 off 26 balls that set the tone for RCB’s chasing down SRH’s 201/9 with 26 balls to spare and begin their title defence in style. “Outstanding knock. I mean, right from the word go, I had plans of going aggressive in the powerplay. But when I saw him play, I was like, just keep putting him back on strike and pick the odd boundary here and there. He completely took the game away from the opposition.

Asked on his chat with Padikkal in the middle, Kohli said, “I even told him, that shot he hit off the slower ball over mid-on for six, at that moment I said, just keep going. You’re hitting the ball amazingly well, just keep pushing and take the game away from the opposition.

“If we finish with 25-26 balls to spare, we’ll also benefit in terms of net run rate. His knock was tremendous. I’ve seen him at close quarters, the skill he has and now he’s applying it.

“This is also at the back of a great domestic red-ball season. His timing, head position, balance, absolutely world-class. I know what he can do with the bat when he’s confident, and tonight was a display of his sheer talent,” he concluded.

Virat Kohli becomes first batter in IPL history to cross 4000 runs in run chases

Virat Kohli becomes first batter in IPL history to cross 4000 runs in run chases

Virat Kohli once again proved why he is called the “chase master” as he became the first batter in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to score over 4000 runs while chasing. The historic landmark came during RCB’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing match of IPL 2026 season, where Kohli played a match-winning knock and pushed his chasing tally past the 4000-run mark to 4027 runs.

The Milestone: King Kohli’s Masterclass

Entering the game with the weight of defending the 2025 title on their shoulders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) were set a daunting target of 202 by an Ishan Kishan-led SRH.

In a historic night at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli anchored the chase with clinical precision, scoring an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls (5 fours, 5 sixes).

As he crossed the individual score of 30, he breached the 4,000-run barrier specifically in the second innings of IPL matches – a feat no other player has achieved in the tournament’s 19-year history.

A Night of Multiple Records

The 4,000-run milestone wasn’t the only record to tumble during Virat Kohli’s batting masterclass. The 37-year-old veteran used the season opener to further cement his legacy:

Most T20 Runs by an Asian: With this innings, Kohli surpassed Pakistan legend Shoaib Malik (13,571 runs) to become the leading Asian run-getter in T20 cricket history.

Approaching 9,000 IPL Runs: Kohli ended the night with 8,706 total IPL runs, inching closer to becoming the first player to ever breach the 9,000-run mark in the league.

64th IPL Fifty: This was his 64th half-century, maintaining his massive lead over the second-placed David Warner.

The ‘Defending Champions’ Statement

The chase was a statement of intent from RCB in the IPL 2026 season opener. While Kohli provided the stability, Devdutt Padikkal (61 off 26) and skipper Rajat Patidar (31 off 12) ensured the run rate never dropped. RCB finished the chase in just 15.4 overs, marking a dominant start to their title defense.

At the halfway stage, SRH’s 201/9 looked competitive, but the manner in which Kohli and Padikkal, along with captain Rajat Patidar’s 12-ball 31 dismantled a toothless bowling attack suggested even 250 would not have sufficed on the night.

IPL 2026: Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal star as RCB begin title defence with thumping 6-wicket win over SRH

IPL 2026: Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal star as RCB begin title defence with thumping 6-wicket win over SRH

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) launched their title defence in style with a commanding six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2026 opening game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing 202, RCB made light work of the target, galloping home in just 15.4 overs, thanks to fluent half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal. Kohli, playing a T20 game after ten months, remained unbeaten on 69 off 38 balls, laced with five fours and as many sixes to smash his 64th IPL fifty and leave the Chinnaswamy crowd enthralled.

Padikkal, meanwhile, was elegant in his timing and wristy stroke-play to hit a rollicking 61 off 26 balls, studded with seven fours and four sixes, and set the tone for the chase to be wrapped up with 26 balls to spare.

At the halfway stage, SRH’s 201/9 looked competitive, but the manner in which Kohli and Padikkal, along with captain Rajat Patidar’s 12-ball 31 dismantled a toothless bowling attack suggested even 250 would not have sufficed on the night.

Veteran left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat struck in his very first over to give Sunrisers Hyderabad an early breakthrough, as he dismissed Phil Salt with a length ball that stopped on the batter and popped up to mid-of, who dodged a collision with his fellow fielder.

In the same over, Padikkal got going by flicking over deep square leg for six, while Kohli got off the mark with a slice over mid-off. Padikkal, however, continued his flying start by racing to 28 off 10 balls. He welcomed David Payne to the IPL with a six over cover-point, before whipping him for a four and six, as RCB reached 51 runs in just four overs.

Kohli soon joined the assault, manufacturing pace against Unadkat’s cutter and flat-batting him through cover, after having whipped him for six. With Padikkal collecting two more boundaries, RCB dominated the powerplay, as they amassed 73 runs for the loss of Salt.

Kohli then produced a trademark stroke against Eshan Malinga, lofting a length ball straight over the bowler’s head to bring the Chinnaswamy crowd to its feet. He was reprieved on 28 when Heinrich Klaasen misjudged a chance at long-on.

Padikkal continued his charge, racing to a 21-ball half-century – his fastest in the IPL – before falling for 61 – holing out to long-off against Dubey. Kohli, meanwhile, showcased his wrist power with a whip over square leg off Harshal Patel and launching Dubey down the ground for another maximum.

Rajat Patidar joined the boundary-hitting party with a crisp four through backward point and a six over long-on off Patel and Dubey. With Malinga missing his lengths, Patidar easily thumped him for a four and two sixes, as 22 runs came off the 12th over.

Though Patidar and Jitesh Sharma fell on consecutive deliveries to Payne, Kohli marched forward to bring up his fifty in 33 balls, before Tim David got two quick boundaries. Kohli then lofted, pulled and carved Patel for a six and two fours before finishing off the chase with an upper-cut through third man to complete an emphatic chase in style.

Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 201/9 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 80, Aniket Verma 43; Jacob Duffy 3-22, Romario Shepherd 3-54) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru 203/4 in 15.4 overs (Virat Kohli 69 not out, Devdutt Padikkal 61; David Payne 2-35, Jaydev Unadkat 1-29) by six wickets

A Powerplay To Remember

Defending champions RCB won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that bore fruit almost immediately, courtesy Jacob Duffy’s raw pace and steep bounce.

The First Strike: In the third over, Duffy hurried Abhishek Sharma with a sharp short ball, forcing a top edge that was safely pouched by Jitesh Sharma.

The Double Blow: Just five balls later, the dangerous Travis Head fell victim to the same strategy, miscuing a pull shot to Phil Salt at deep backward square leg.

The Three-Wicket Haul: Duffy capped off a dream start by dismissing Nitish Kumar Reddy, who top-edged a hurried swing to mid-wicket.

By the time Duffy finished his dream spell, SRH was reeling at 49/3. He ended his four overs with stellar figures of 3 for 22, maintaining an economy of 5.50 on a pitch notoriously known as a graveyard for bowlers.

Who is Jacob Duffy?

While many Indian fans are just learning his name, Duffy has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s domestic circuit for over a decade.

The Otago Veteran: Hailing from Lumsden, Southland, Duffy made his senior debut for Otago back in 2012 at the age of 17. He has since taken over 340 First-Class wickets and 180+ T20 wickets.

The T20I Ascent: Since his international debut in 2020, Duffy has grown into a specialist. In early 2025, he reached a career peak by becoming the No. 1 ranked T20I bowler in the world following a dominant series against Pakistan.

The 2026 Auction Steal: RCB secured Duffy at his base price of INR 2 crore during the IPL 2026 auction. Initially seen as a backup option, his performance against SRH has already sparked buzz about his continuity in absence of Josh Hazlewood.

What Duffy Brings To RCB

At 6 feet tall, Duffy combines pace with precision. He excels at:

New-ball swing – Moving the ball both ways to trouble aggressive openers.

Variations – Including seam movement and slower balls that disrupt timing.

Consistency – Maintaining economy rates even on flat pitches, as evidenced by his strong T20I numbers (economy around 8 in a high-scoring era).

His experience in subcontinental conditions from recent tours (including against India) and domestic grind in New Zealand makes him well-equipped for IPL’s demanding schedule.

Looking Ahead

Jacob Duffy’s explosive entry into the IPL adds another exciting chapter to his journey from a quiet Southland town to global cricket’s biggest stage. For RCB, he could prove to be a vital cog in their pace battery, especially in power plays.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on whether this debut spell marks the beginning of a successful IPL campaign for the Kiwi speedster. Whether it’s swinging it past batters or celebrating with teammates alongside stars like Virat Kohli, Phil Salt has already shown he belongs.

The dream debut is just the start – the Chinnaswamy faithful and RCB fans will be hoping for many more memorable spells from the New Zealand pacer in the seasons to come.
