Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blazes 22-ball 44 but falls six short of historic India A fifty in Dambulla vs Afghanistan A

A capacity crowd at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium witnessed another electrifying cameo from India’s teenage phenomenon Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on June 11 but also the frustration of watching him fall just six runs short of what would have been a landmark maiden fifty for India A. The 15-year-old lit up the tri-series clash against Afghanistan A with nine boundaries in a breathtaking 22-ball 44, before Afghan pacer Abdullah Ahmadzai brought the innings to an abrupt and slightly unfortunate end.

Sooryavanshi Blazes Out of the Blocks

Afghanistan A skipper Imran Mir won the toss and elected to bowl first in Dambulla, but Sooryavanshi gave the decision an immediate answer. Facing Mohammad Ibrahim in the opening over, the teenager announced his intentions by crashing two boundaries off consecutive deliveries, setting the tone for what was to follow.

Operating with exceptional clarity in the powerplay, Sooryavanshi picked gaps with the precision of a seasoned campaigner rather than a 15-year-old on his second India A appearance. Alongside opening partner Prabhsimran Singh, the boundaries flowed consistently as the pair put on a rapid partnership, propelling India A to a commanding 74 for no loss inside seven overs.

The partnership came to an end in unfortunate fashion on the very first delivery of the eighth over. Sooryavanshi attempted to work the ball backward of square on the back foot but found only the edge of his bat, with the ball flying through to wicketkeeper Ishaq Rahimi. Ahmadzai, bowling from around the wicket with a short delivery angling sharply into the batter, had cramped Sooryavanshi for room leaving him with no scoring option and producing what was ultimately a soft dismissal given the quality of the innings that preceded it.

Shortly after Sooryavanshi’s departure, Priyansh Arya also fell cheaply to the same Ahmadzai, departing for a single-digit score in the tenth over after miscuing a cut shot straight to point fielder Bahir Shah.

The Search for a Defining Knock Continues

While Sooryavanshi’s 44 off 22 balls at a strike rate of 200 was genuinely thrilling to watch, the teenager will be aware that converting these explosive starts into match-winning innings is the next step in his development at this level.

In the tri-series opener against Sri Lanka A, he had fallen for a 12-ball 14 to pacer Mohamed Shiraz, caught at mid-off by Sahan Arachchige. Two promising starts in two games — but the maiden fifty remains elusive.

Sooryavanshi’s presence in this tri-series follows a record-shattering IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals, which not only helped guide the franchise to the final but also earned him his first senior India T20I call-up for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. The India A assignments in Dambulla serve as his final preparation ground before what promises to be a landmark senior debut.

WATCH: Diogo Jota’s widow writes emotional letter to Andy Robertson ahead of FIFA WC 2026; ‘WC was one of those dreams…’

There are moments in sport that transcend the game entirely. Scotland captain Andy Robertson experienced one of those moments when he received a deeply personal letter from Rute Cardoso, the widow of his former Liverpool teammate and close friend Diogo Jota, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The letter, shared as part of FIFA’s touching ‘Letters That Unite’ feature, has since moved the football world to tears.

A Dream They Shared Together

Jota, the brilliant Portuguese forward who lit up Anfield and captivated football fans worldwide, tragically lost his life on July 3, 2025, at just 28 years old. He and his younger brother André Silva, aged 26, were travelling through Cernadilla in Zamora, Spain, when their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire, claiming both their lives. Jota is survived by his wife Rute Cardoso and their three children.

The loss sent shockwaves through the football world. Liverpool FC retired his iconic number 20 jersey permanently across all teams and unveiled a lasting memorial tribute at Anfield in May 2026. Portugal manager Roberto Martínez paid his own symbolic tribute by including Jota as the legendary extra member in the official 2026 World Cup squad graphic, declaring that his spirit remains the heartbeat of the Portuguese team.

The Letter That Moved Robertson to Tears

When Scotland sealed their World Cup qualification in November, Robertson was open about where his mind immediately went. Jota had been a constant presence in his thoughts. Months later, Cardoso’s letter to Robertson brought those emotions flooding back.

“Diogo often spoke of you, of the friendship you built, the battles you fought together, the challenges, the laughter, the conversations about football and about dreams,” Cardoso wrote.

“The World Cup was one of those dreams, a dream that the two of you nurtured side by side with the same passion with which you took to the pitch.”

The widow then addressed Robertson directly, her words carrying the full weight of grief and gratitude simultaneously.

“When I heard your words and learnt what you felt on that day when Scotland qualified for the World Cup after so many years of waiting, I realised that Diogo never truly left the pitch. By achieving that moment and securing your place at the World Cup, you won’t be going alone. You’ll be taking his dream with you too.”

Robertson’s Vow: “I’m Playing for Both of Us”

For Robertson, now at Tottenham Hotspur after departing Liverpool at the end of last season, the letter crystallised exactly what this World Cup means to him personally. Speaking after reading Cardoso’s message, the Scotland captain made a promise that carried far beyond football.

“I’ll carry him in my heart and I know he’ll be with me come the first game, come the second game, come the third game and hopefully beyond that,” Robertson said.

“He’s always there. The memories are always something that we bring up and sometimes laugh, sometimes cry. And that will be no different, especially going into a tournament which is full of emotion. I know he’ll be right at the front of my mind.”

He then delivered the line that encapsulated everything: “I’m not only just playing for me. I’m playing for both of us.”

Scotland’s World Cup Journey Begins

Scotland take to the field for the first time at a World Cup since 1998, making this tournament a momentous occasion for an entire nation. Robertson’s side begin their Group C campaign against Haiti in Boston on June 13, before subsequent fixtures against Morocco on June 19 and a monumental clash with Brazil on June 24.

For Robertson, every step of that journey will be taken with Jota’s memory firmly alongside him, carrying forward a World Cup dream that was taken far too soon.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Five Defenders who could define the tournament

FIFA World Cup 2026: Five Defenders who could define the tournament

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is finally here, and as 48 nations descend upon the three host countries the United States, Mexico, and Canada the football world is bracing itself for 104 matches of pure spectacle. While strikers and midfielders traditionally hog the spotlight at tournaments of this magnitude, the modern game has fundamentally transformed the role of the defender. Today’s fullbacks and centre-backs are not merely shot-stoppers they are complete footballers capable of unlocking defences, winning aerial duels, and changing the course of matches entirely on their own.

Here are five defenders who could leave a lasting mark on World Cup 2026.

Gabriel Magalhaes (Brazil)

The Arsenal centre-back has enjoyed a career-defining season. Forming an impenetrable partnership with William Saliba at the heart of the Gunners’ defence, Gabriel played a central role in ending Arsenal’s 22-year wait for a Premier League title. His reading of the game, aerial dominance and physicality make him one of the most complete central defenders in world football today.

At club level, Gabriel came agonisingly close to Champions League glory as well, helping hold PSG to a 1-1 draw after extra time in the final — only for his missed penalty to prove decisive. At 28, the Brazilian is in the absolute prime of his career and arrives at this World Cup with a point to prove. Brazil, desperate to claim a record sixth world title, will lean heavily on his organisational qualities at the back.

William Saliba (France)

Gabriel’s Arsenal partner Saliba has been equally impressive and walks into this World Cup off the back of a remarkable domestic campaign. The Frenchman was integral to Arsenal’s title triumph and was equally commanding in the Champions League final, where the Gunners conceded just once across 120 minutes against a formidable PSG attack.

A back injury suffered after the UCL final caused brief concern within the French camp, but Saliba was cleared to join the squad just days before the tournament began — much to the relief of French supporters. Alongside Ibrahim Konaté and Dayot Upamecano, he gives France arguably the most formidable central defensive unit at the entire tournament.

Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands)

It has not been Liverpool’s finest season  the Reds slipped to fifth place and failed to retain their title — but van Dijk’s personal standing in the game remains beyond question. The towering Dutchman brings leadership, intelligence and an almost telepathic sense of positioning that makes him a nightmare for any forward to play against.

At 34, questions about his longevity are inevitable, but van Dijk continues to prove doubters wrong. His threat from set pieces adds another dimension — few defenders in the world are as dangerous inside the opposition penalty area. With the Netherlands chasing their first-ever World Cup triumph, their captain will be the cornerstone on which their entire campaign is built.

Achraf Hakimi (PSG)

Few players in world football are as electrifying going forward as Hakimi. The Moroccan right-back first announced himself on the grandest stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he inspired Morocco to a historic semifinal  the first African nation ever to reach that stage. His audacious Panenka penalty against Spain in the round of 16 remains one of the most talked-about moments from that tournament.

Since then, Hakimi has only grown in stature. His blistering pace down the right flank and his ability to deliver in decisive moments helped PSG claim back-to-back Champions League titles. In 2026, he arrives not as a surprise package but as one of the most feared defenders on the planet  and Morocco will be counting on him to engineer another deep run.

Lucas Hernandez (France)

Often overshadowed by more celebrated teammates, the versatile French defender brings a quietly devastating quality to everything he does. Whether operating as a left-back or slotting into central defence, his energy, recovery pace and willingness to drive forward give France an unpredictability that opposition coaches struggle to plan for.

His ability to contribute both defensively and in transition makes him an invaluable utility player in Didier Deschamps’ setup. With France among the favourites to lift the trophy, Hernandez’s role  while rarely the headline act could prove absolutely vital when the knockout pressure intensifies.

Honourable Mentions: Jules Koundé (Barcelona), Denzel Dumfries (Netherlands), Joško Gvardiol (Croatia), Willian Pacho (Ecuador), Marquinhos (Brazil), David Alaba (Austria), Nicolás Tagliafico (Argentina), Rúben Dias (Portugal)

You can watch FIFA 2026 on Zee’s new Unite8 Sports network (Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD). Multiple group-stage matches that will take place simultaneously will be aired across the four channels with English and Hindi feeds. All games will also be streamed live on the Zee5 app and website.

ICC men’s player of the month: Dipendra Singh Airee, Taijul Islam and Mushfiqur Rahim shortlisted after strong performances

Nepal all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee and Bangladesh duo Taijul Islam and Mushfiqur Rahim have been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for May following a series of standout performances for their respective teams.

On the women’s side, England seamer Lauren Bell, Pakistan batter Gull Feroza, and New Zealand’s Maddy Green are nominated on the back of some strong performances for their countries throughout international cricket in the month.

Airee sealed his spot on the men’s shortlist after a productive spell of form in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Kirtipur. The Nepal all-rounder started the month with a century against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and finished the series having scored 249 runs in six ODIs at an average of 49.80 and strike-rate of 110.66, whilst contributing with eight wickets at an economy of 4.52, a haul of 4 for 24 against the United States, taking best figures.

Spinner Taijul Islam was also instrumental for Bangladesh, playing a key role in a historic 2-0 home Test series whitewash over Pakistan. The left-armer was the highest wicket-taker in the series with 13 wickets in two games at an average of 19.61, including 6 for 120 in Pakistan’s second innings of the second Test in Sylhet.

Batter Mushfiqur Rahim, who was named Player of the Series in the Tests against Pakistan, also picked up a nomination after he hit 235 runs across two Tests at an average of 63.25, including a 71 in the first innings of the first Test and a match-defining 137 in the second Test’s second innings.

On the women’s side, fast bowler Lauren Bell completes England’s selections. She was awarded a nomination on the back of some consistent performances in multiple formats of the game before the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Bell was the leading wicket-taker for England in their ODI series against New Zealand, taking five wickets in three games before adding another eight wickets in four T20 internationals against New Zealand and India.

Pakistan’s Gull Feroza had a fantastic month after she claimed Player of the Series in her country’s 3-0 ODI whitewash over Zimbabwe in Karachi. The opening batter scored 256 runs in the series, including scores of 50, 100, and 106 not out, hitting at 103.64 and averaging a stunning 128, and even found time to score 82 runs in the T20I series, including 75 off 47 balls, hitting at a rate of 157.69.

New Zealand’s Maddy Green is the third of the female nominees after she took a leading role for her side in a drawn ODI series with England. Green scored 125 runs in three ODIs at a strike-rate of 83.33, which was topped with 88 at Chester-le-Street, whilst adding another 93 runs in three T20Is, including 56 not out in the second match.

FIFA World Cup 2026: How the 48-team format works and what changes in groups, knockouts and qualification – All you need to know

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to become the biggest tournament in football history, marking a major expansion in both scale and structure. For the first time, 48 teams will compete in the tournament, moving beyond the 32-team format that has been in place since 1998.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making it the first-ever World Cup to be staged across three nations simultaneously. It also marks only the second time in history that multiple countries will host the competition, after Japan and South Korea co-hosted the 2002 edition.

From 13 teams to 48

The FIFA World Cup has undergone multiple expansions since its inception in 1930, when only 13 teams participated. The tournament gradually increased to 16 teams, then 24, and finally 32 teams from 1998 onwards. Now, the 2026 edition will witness its biggest leap yet with 48 participating nations.

Football powerhouse Brazil remains the most successful nation, with five World Cup titles to their name.

How the 48-team format will work

Under the new structure, the 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each. Each team will play three group-stage matches.

From the group stage:

Top two teams from each group qualify directly. Plus, the eight best third-placed teams also advance, which means 32 teams will move into the knockout stage, introducing a new round of 32 before the round of 16.

Knockout stage format

Once the group stage ends, the tournament will follow a traditional elimination format:

– Round of 32

– Round of 16

– Quarterfinals

– Semi-finals

– Third-place playoff

– Final

The final will be held at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19, while the third-place match will take place in Miami on July 18.

Record 104 matches across three countries

The expanded format means a massive increase in the number of matches. The 2026 World Cup will feature 104 games in total, compared to 64 in the previous editions.

Matches will be hosted across 16 cities spread across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, making logistics, travel, and scheduling more complex than ever before.

Fair play and qualification rules

If teams are level on points in the group stage, rankings will be decided in the following order:

– Goal difference

– Goals scored

– Fair play points (disciplinary record)

– FIFA world rankings (if all else is equal)

A new era for world football

FIFA believes the expanded format will increase global participation and give more nations a chance to compete on football’s biggest stage. While concerns remain over travel and scheduling due to the three-country format, officials say the tournament will deliver greater reach, diversity, and global engagement.
