Apple mulls switching from aluminium to plastic case for next-gen Watch SE

Apple mulls switching from aluminium to plastic case for next-gen Watch SE

Apple is reportedly considering a switch to a rigid plastic casing for the next-generation Apple Watch SE, which could be launched next year. This development follows Apple’s experimentation with plastic, which was not included in recent announcements.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the shift to a plastic casing is “increasingly likely.” Gurman also mentioned that this change could offer a broader range of colours, potentially making the device more appealing to children. The Apple Watch SE, currently in development, is facing challenges related to the plastic switch, which is delaying its launch.

The Apple Watch SE is expected to feature an upgraded processor, possibly the S9 chip from the Apple Watch Series 9 or the forthcoming S10 chip anticipated for the next-generation Apple Watch Series 10.

Switching from an aluminium to a plastic casing could significantly reduce manufacturing costs. This reduction might enable Apple to enhance the Apple Watch SE’s functionality and features, such as introducing an always-on display and improved electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Additionally, a lower production cost could lead to a more affordable price for consumers while retaining a competitive feature set.

Overall, the move to a plastic casing could allow Apple to offer a more cost-effective Apple Watch SE with advanced features and possibly a more attractive price point, broadening its appeal to a wider audience.

For context, Apple switched to Titanium casing from Stainless Steel for the Watch Series 10, which is also offered in aluminium casing option. The Apple Watch Series 10 comes with larger 42mm and 46mm options, featuring a wide-angle OLED display with a wider aspect ratio than its predecessor. According to Apple, the new chassis design of the Watch Series 10 is 9.7mm thick, making it 10 per cent thinner than the Apple Watch Series 9.

Apple faces lower than expected demand for iPhone 16 series: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple faces lower than expected demand for iPhone 16 series: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Plus

Apple‘s new iPhone 16 series appears to be facing weaker demand than anticipated, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a report published on Medium, Kuo noted that first-weekend pre-order sales for the iPhone 16 series were down by 12.7 per cent compared to the iPhone 15 series. The decline is particularly pronounced for the iPhone 16 Pro models.

Kuo’s report indicates that the iPhone 16 Pro Max garnered 17.1 million pre-orders during the first weekend, representing a 16 per cent decrease from the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s launch figures. Similarly, the iPhone 16 Pro saw 9.8 million pre-orders, a drop of 27 per cent compared to its predecessor. Conversely, the base iPhone 16 models have seen increased interest, with the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus receiving 7.3 million and 2.6 million pre-orders respectively, reflecting a 10 per cent and 48 per cent increase over last year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models.

Despite the rise in demand for the base iPhone 16 models, Apple is experiencing an overall slowdown in demand, mainly due to the lower-than-expected performance of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models. Kuo suggests that this trend may be influenced by the fact that the highly anticipated Apple Intelligence features are available on last year’s Pro models but not on the base iPhone 15 models. Additionally, intensified competition from local Chinese smartphone brands is contributing to the slowdown.

The data mentioned in Kuo’s report is based on recent supply chain surveys and pre-order statistics from Apple’s website.

The iPhone 16 series is currently available for pre-order in India, with availability starting from September 20.

Meta to enable Instagram comments to be shared directly to Threads: Report

Meta to enable Instagram comments to be shared directly to Threads: Report

Threads(Photo: Shutterstock)

Meta is reportedly planning to launch a new feature that will allow users to share comments from Instagram posts to Threads. According to The Verge, an image shared by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi reveals that a dropdown menu will appear when users comment on an Instagram post. This menu will offer the option to share the comment exclusively on Instagram or also on Threads.

This development is part of Meta’s broader strategy to integrate Threads with its other platforms. The company has previously showcased Threads posts on Instagram and Facebook, and aims to integrate Threads more deeply within the fediverse—a global, open network of interconnected yet independent social media servers. Meta announced in June that Threads would enable users to like and view replies to their Threads posts on other federated platforms.

In July, Meta had announced that Threads has reached the milestone of 175 million monthly active users, with India being one of the most active regions. Threads, Meta’s social media platform launched last year to rival X (formerly Twitter), made the announcement to commemorate its one-year anniversary.

In related news, Instagram has started incorporating comments into stories. Comments will be visible for 24 hours after the story is posted, but will remain if the story is saved as a highlight. Users can also choose to disable comments for individual stories. However, comments will only be visible to followers of the user posting the story, and only those whom the poster follows back can leave comments.

Apple confirms 8GB RAM in iPhone 16, 16 Plus for Apple Intelligence, gaming

Apple confirms 8GB RAM in iPhone 16, 16 Plus for Apple Intelligence, gaming

Apple has confirmed that the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are equipped with 8GB RAM, an upgrade from the 6GB RAM in last year’s base models. Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, confirmed this in an interview with Chinese YouTube creator Geekerwan.

Srouji explained that the increase to 8GB RAM was driven by the need to support Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of artificial intelligence features. “We have extensive data on what enables certain features, and Apple Intelligence is a crucial feature that we wanted to support,” Srouji said. “We evaluate different configurations for computation, memory bandwidth, and capacity to ensure the best performance. Apple Intelligence was a key factor in our decision to increase the RAM to 8GB.”

Previously, Apple stated that 8GB RAM is required to run Apple Intelligence, which is why AI-powered tools were not available on the base iPhone 15 models.

In addition to supporting Apple Intelligence, the 8GB RAM is expected to enhance performance in various areas, including graphic-intensive gaming. Srouji noted, “The 8GB RAM will greatly benefit other applications, such as high-end gaming, including AAA titles.”

At the iPhone 16 series launch event last week, Apple announced that several AAA gaming titles, including Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which were previously available only on Pro models, will now be accessible on the base iPhone 16 variants. The increased RAM, combined with the ray-tracing capabilities of the new A18 chip, will significantly enhance the gaming experience on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models.

More Android smartphones to get 'Circle to Search' feature soon: Report

More Android smartphones to get 'Circle to Search' feature soon: Report

Google’s gesture-driven Circle to Search feature, previously exclusive to Pixel and Samsung devices, is reportedly making its way to additional Android smartphones. According to an Android Authority report, Chinese smartphone maker TECNO has informed YouTuber Ben Sin and Android Central that the feature will be available on its new foldable device, the Phantom V Fold 2, starting next month.

Circle to Search allows users to perform searches directly from their screen. Google had announced at its annual I/O developer conference in May that it aims to extend Circle to Search to 200 million devices by the end of the year. However, Google has not yet officially confirmed whether the feature will be limited to flagship models or available on other devices as well.

Originally unveiled with the Galaxy S24 series, Circle to Search has also been introduced on various flagship and mid-range models within the Samsung Galaxy and Pixel series. With TECNO’s inclusion, users can expect the feature to potentially roll out to devices from OnePlus, Vivo, OPPO, and other manufacturers in the near future.

Additionally, Google is adding support for barcode and QR code scanning to Circle to Search, a feature the company has been working on for some time.

Recently, Google also introduced the Circle to Search Music Search feature, allowing users to identify songs playing from nearby speakers or within other apps without leaving their current application. This feature has begun its rollout.
