Wikipedia introduces new features to enhance user experience: Details here

Wikimedia has introduced new features to for better new user experience.

According to The Verge, the company has announced extra features on a platform-wide level, after being testing them for newcomers since 2019.

A landing page for new editors is visible to those who are logged into their accounts. A mentor will be chosen for them from a group of more knowledgeable site veterans who can provide guidance.

Users will also be encouraged to begin making small adjustments through the landing page, sometimes with suggestions made by a Wikimedia-trained machine learning system.

“The Wikimedia Foundation was noticing that there were problems with the retention of new editors, meaning that a lot of people would attempt to start editing but fail and not stick around,” Marshall Miller, Group Product Manager of Wikimedia, was quoted as saying.

“It is so hard to edit . There are so many barriers to entry,” he added.

As of right now, 584 people have signed up to mentor new contributors in the global Wikipedia community.

The ‘structured tasks’ option, which includes things like adding relevant photos and cross-wiki links to pages as well as suggested newcomer tasks like copy-editing is now available on Wikimedia.

The new Wikimedia system is designed to provide many of the interface-based benefits, the report said.

Users can see how many pageviews the articles they changed have received in the ‘impact’ area on the newcomers page, to get a feel of the impact they’re having.

Apple introduces ‘Clean Energy Charging’ feature to iOS 16.1 update

Apple introduces ‘Clean Energy Charging’ feature to iOS 16.1 update

Apple has introduced a new feature called “Clean Energy Charging” to iOS 16.1-enabled iPhones that will allow users to cut down on their carbon footprint.

Those who prefer cleaner charging methods can use Clean Energy Charging, which selectively charges when low-carbon electricity is available.

Clean Energy Charging works together with “Optimised Battery Charging” to learn users charging habits. It engages only where the user spends the most time and regularly charges their iPhone for long periods, such as at home or work, according to the tech giant.

It doesn’t engage if users charging habits are variable or if they are in a new location, such as when travelling.

Clean Energy Charging is available only in the US, and it is enabled by default when users set up their iPhones or update to iOS 16.1. Users can disable it by going to Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging and then turning off Clean Energy Charging.

Whenever Clean Energy Charging suspends charging, an alert appears on the lock screen letting users know when their iPhone will be fully charged.

When the user needs their iPhone fully charged sooner, tap “Charge Now” after holding the notification for a few seconds, it added.

Along with Clean Energy Charging, iOS 16.1 also features live activities, wallet key sharing, lock screen/home screen customisation, matter support, delete wallet app, battery percentage in the status bar, screenshot UI, and more.

Apple likely to kill 6.1-inch base iPhone model from next year: Reports

Apple likely to kill 6.1-inch base iPhone model from next year: Reports

After discontinuing iPhone mini-series this year, Apple may also kill the 6.1-inch base iPhone model with the launch of next-generation iPhones in 2023.

According to GizmoChina, the tech giant has been working on an iPhone Ultra model, which will most likely launch next year. However, it is rumoured that the company might discontinue the 6.1-inch base iPhone model.

The rumour had sparked a backlash from many, who took to Twitter to voice out their disapproval of the iPhone 15 Ultra model.

Some stated that the iPhone Pro Max models are already too large. At the moment, the base model is the only true compact flagship phone from the brand, which some people prefer.

As per the report, there is also a chance that Apple will launch the iPhone 15 Ultra with some exclusive Ultra features, which has also raised concerns with its customers that do not wish to have another Pro Max model in the market, despite rumours of the Ultra being the replacement for the top end Pro Max series.

A recent rumour regarding the iPhone 15 Ultra suggested that it will feature a premium titanium build.

Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that “Ultra” will exclusively have a periscope lens (6x or 5x). Also, the Ultra will come with an improved battery life that lasts three to four hours longer.

The iPhone 15 Ultra is expected to go up in price compared to the 14 Pro Max, possibly starting at $1,200 (up from $1,100).

Google to end support for Windows 7, 8.1, launch new Chrome version next yr

The tech giant will officially stop support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on February 7, 2023, when Chrome 110 is expected to be released, the company said in a support page.

Users need to ensure their device is running Windows 10 or later to continue receiving future Chrome releases.

There will not be any new updates for users of these operating systems, but older versions of Chrome will still function.

If someone is still using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, it is advised to upgrade to a supported version of Windows if they want to keep getting Chrome’s security updates and new features, the company said.

Recently, a report said, with 303 vulnerabilities and a cumulative total of 3,159 vulnerabilities as of 2022, Chrome was the most vulnerable browser available.

According to the report, the figures were based on data from a database, covering January 1 to October 5.

Chrome was the only browser with vulnerabilities in the five days in October, including CVE-2022-3318, CVE-2022-3314, CVE-2022-3311, CVE-2022-3309, and CVE-2022-3307.

The CVE programme tracked security flaws and vulnerabilities across multiple platforms.

The database does not list details for the flaws, but the report said they could lead to memory corruption on a computer.

The tech giant has officially unveiled iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1, which indicates that iOS 16 features like iMessage editing and undo send in Mail will eventually be added to the iPad, reports The Verge.

Additionally, the Stage Manager multitasking function, however, which was unpopular and unreliable during the iPadOS betas, is now officially released.

Although the company postponed the release of iPadOS 16 from its September date, Stage Manager might still have some issues when it will made available to the general public in version 16.1.

Stage Manager would not have external display support upon launch despite the delay, the report said.

Recently, the company had announced to roll out iOS 16.1 update with new features, including ‘Live Activities’, ‘Clean Energy Charging’ and more.

‘Live’ feature gave updates about an ongoing sports game and tracks the progress of the ride.

The update supported ‘Matter’, a new smart home connectivity standard that enabled compatible accessories to work together seamlessly, across platforms.

‘Clean Energy Charging’ focused on decreasing the carbon footprint of the iPhone by planning charging times for when the grid was using cleaner energy sources.
