UK watchdog accuses Google of anti-competitive behaviour in digital ads biz

Google was slammed on Friday by UK regulators who say it’s taking advantage of its dominance in digital advertising to thwart competition in Britain, ratcheting up pressure that the tech giant is facing on both sides of the Atlantic over its ad tech business practices.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority said that the US company gives preference to its own services to the detriment of online publishers and advertisers in Britain’s 1.8 billion pound (USD 2.4 billion) digital ad market.

Google is a major player throughout the digital ad ecosystem, providing servers for publishers to manage ad space on their websites and apps, tools for advertisers and media agencies to buy display ads, and an exchange where both sides come together to buy and sell ads in real time at auctions.

We’ve provisionally found that Google is using its market power to hinder competition when it comes to the ads people see on websites, the watchdog’s interim executive director of enforcement, Juliette Enser, said in a press release.

The watchdog’s charges, known as a statement of objections, come two years after it opened its investigation. The European Union’s antitrust authorities have also been Google’s ad bidding services while and it has also been the focus of a state-led antitrust lawsuit against Google that’s set to go to trial this month.

The CMA said that Google’s anti-competitive” conduct is ongoing, but the company disputed the allegations on Friday.

Google remains committed to creating value for our publisher and advertiser partners in this highly competitive sector, the company said in a prepared statement. “The core of this case rests on flawed interpretations of the ad tech sector. We disagree with the CMA’s view and we will respond accordingly.

The UK watchdog alleged Google has been exploiting its dominance since 2015 to strengthen the market position of its own AdX ad exchange and protect it from rivals. AdX is where Google charges the highest fees in the ad tech system, taking about 20 per cent of the amount from bids, the CMA said.

The regulator’s accusations include charges that Google manipulates advertiser bids so they have higher value when they go into AdX auctions then rival exchanges. AdX also gets to bid first in auctions run by Google’s publisher ad server, potentially shutting out rivals from the chance to bid, the watchdog said.

Google now has the chance to reply to the charges. The CMA said its considering what is needed to make sure Google ceases the anti-competitive practices. It has the power to impose a fine worth up to 10 per cent of a company’s annual worldwide revenue.

India emerges as second-largest global 5G smartphone market, overtakes US

India emerges as second-largest global 5G smartphone market, overtakes US

Globally, Apple leads in 5G handset shipments with over 25 per cent of the market

5G smartphones are becoming increasingly prominent across various price ranges in India. According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, India has emerged as the world’s second-largest market for 5G smartphones, trailing only behind China.

Prachir Singh, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, highlighted that significant contributions from brands like Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi, especially in the budget segment, have been key to this growth.

“India became the second-biggest 5G handset market during the first half, overtaking the US. The strong shipments from Xiaomi, Vivo, Samsung, and other brands in the budget segment were the main reasons for this trend,” Singh said.

China maintains the leading position with a 32 per cent share of the global 5G smartphone market, while India holds 13 per cent. The US has fallen to third place with a 10 per cent market share.

Globally, Apple leads in 5G handset shipments with over 25 per cent of the market, predominantly driven by the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 series. Samsung follows with over 21 per cent market share, thanks to its Galaxy A and S24 series. In the first half of 2024, Apple and Samsung each claimed five positions in the top ten list of 5G models, with Apple occupying the top four spots.

India has significantly boosted Xiaomi’s growth, helping it secure the third position globally. According to Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi experienced a triple-digit growth rate in India and double-digit growth in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and China.

Similarly, India has been a crucial growth engine for Vivo, along with China and other emerging Asian markets.

Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, stated that in the first half of 2024, 5G-enabled devices made up more than 54 per cent of the total handset market, surpassing the 50 per cent threshold for the first time.

“As the democratisation of 5G handsets increases with greater 5G penetration in lower price segments and the expanding reach of 5G networks, this trend will continue to grow. The ongoing global premiumisation trend will further fuel this growth. According to our market outlook, the 5G share will cross 57 per cent in 2024 and 65 per cent in 2025,” he said.

Lenovo showcases new AI PC concept with 'Smart Lid' that follows users

China’s Lenovo showcased its Auto Twist AI PC concept at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2024 event in Berlin, Germany. The concept device features an auto-rotating hinge that allows the display to reposition itself according to the user’s position. Lenovo said that the design is aimed at enhancing user interaction through intelligent automation and artificial intelligence.

Alongside its new innovative concept, Lenovo unveiled several new AI-powered laptops under its Yoga, ThinkPad and IdeaPad series featuring Qualcomm’s latest X Plus 8-core and Intel’s Core Ultra processor (Series 2) chips. These new laptops will offer exclusive AI-powered features from Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC platform as well as Lenovo’s own suite of generative AI features that it calls Lenovo Creator Zone. These new AI PCs will be available globally in the coming weeks.

Lenovo Auto Twist AI PC: Details

Lenovo said that the new concept device features industry-first Auto Twist design that can adapt to multiple scenarios with automatic rotating display. The company said that the device uses AI to track users movement across the room and positions the “Smart Lid” accordingly, ensuring optimal display visibility. Apart from this, the technology can be useful for keeping the user in the centre during meetings and presentations.

The device not just uses AI to automate the movement, but slo its natural language processing capabilities to switch modes based on user’s voice commands. For example, the user can prompt the device to close itself, or to switch between Laptop and Tablet modes. Additionally, for security, the laptop’s “Smart Lid” automatically closes when the laptop is unattended.

Auto Twist AI PC is still a concept and Lenovo has not yet revealed how it plans to bring the technology to customers.

iPhone 16 launch event on September 9: Expected Apple AirPods 2024 lineup

iPhone 16 launch event on September 9: Expected Apple AirPods 2024 lineup

AirPods Max and AirPods 3

Apple is expected to revamp the existing AirPods lineup by replacing older generation models with two new standard AirPods fourth generation models. At the “It’s Glowtime” launch event for iPhone 16 series, the company might introduce a regular AirPods 4 and an entry-level model to replace second and third generation AirPods from Apple’s lineup. We also might see a new AirPods Max headphone model at this year’s event.

This is how the Apple AirPods lineup might look like after September 9-

Apple AirPods 4: What to expect

Apple will likely launch not one but two new AirPods 4 models alongside the iPhone 16 series, as reported earlier by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The report suggested that Apple will replace the AirPods 2 with an entry-level AirPods 4 variant, featuring a modern design and improved audio capabilities. The AirPods 2 were launched in 2019 and features an outdated design similar to the original AirPods. Similarly, Apple might replace the 2021 AirPods 3 with a higher-end AirPods 4 variant.

Both new AirPods models are expected to feature a similar design, however, Apple might change the branding of these devices. The higher-end model is expected to keep the AirPods 4 tag, while the entry-level model may get rebranded as “AirPods Lite.”

Both these models are expected to feature new drivers for improved audio, but Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology would likely be limited to the higher-priced model. The entry-level AirPods might also miss out on wireless charging functionality but will likely get a USB-C port for charging, similar to its more expensive counterpart.

AirPods Max 2: What to expect

At the iPhone 16 launch event, Apple might bring the first major update to its headphone, the AirPods Max. Apple might bring some of the audio features that it offers on its AirPods Pro to the AirPods Max, given that the headphones are already priced higher than the AirPods Pro.

AirPods Max 2 is expected to be powered by the H2 chip that powers the AirPods Pro 2 model currently. With more processing capability, Apple might bring features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and more to the AirPods Max.

Adaptive Audio feature dynamically switches between different Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) modes depending on the environment. Meanwhile, the Conversation Awareness function detects an ongoing conversation and lowers the music volume while isolating the voice for more clarity. Other notable features that might get featured on the new model include head-shaking gestures to respond to Siri, voice isolation on phone calls, Personalized Spatial Audio, and more.

No major cosmetic change is expected for the second generation AirPods Max, but Apple might offer new colour options. Additionally, Apple might equip the new AirPods Max with a USB-C port.

New AirPods Pro?

While Apple is likely to revamp the AirPods lineup this year, it is not expected to bring a new top-of-the-line AirPods Pro model. The next generation AirPods Pro is expected to launch in 2025 and not much is known about the improvements it will offer. However, it is likely that Apple will pack-in a new H3 processor for improved audio processing and more.
