YouTube announces tools to safeguard creators against AI generated copies

Google owned YouTube has announced that it is developing new likeness management technology to help protect creators and artists against copying using generative artificial intelligence. In a post, the video streaming platform talked about equipping creators and artists with tools to utilise artificial intelligence while maintaining control over the representation of their likeness such as face and voice. 


The first tool that YouTube has said that it is building is synthetic-singing identification technology within Content ID that will enable partners to automatically identify and control AI-generated content on YouTube that mimics their singing voices. YouTube has said that it is refining the technology and plans to launch the pilot program early next year.

 


The second tool will empower individuals across various fields to identify and control AI-generated content showing their faces on YouTube.


Additionally, YouTube also said that it is also pledging to crack down on those scraping the platform to build AI tools. The blog also said that the video platform is working on developing tools to offer creators more choices regarding the use of their content by third-party AI companies. 


“When it comes to other parties, such as those who may try to scrape YouTube content, we’ve been clear that accessing creator content in unauthorised ways violates our Terms of Service and undermines the value we provide back to creators in exchange for their work. We’ll continue to employ measures to ensure that third parties respect these terms, including ongoing investments in the systems that detect and prevent unauthorized access, up to and including blocking access from those who scrape.” said YouTube on its official blog.


For context, YouTube pledged last November to offer music labels a way to crack down on AI clones of musicians.

The Samsung Crystal 4K Dynamic TV is powered by the Crystal Processor 4K that the company said enhances visuals with precise colour mapping and 4K resolution output. The processor also enables advanced features such as 4K Upscaling, Dynamic Crystal Colour and Contrast Enhancer. 


4K Upscaling essentially enhances picture quality by upscaling lower resolution content to near 4K quality, offering a more immersive viewing experience. Dynamic Crystal Colour technology on the other hand widens the range of colours that can be produced by the display. Meanwhile, the Contrast Enhancer function automatically adjusts the contrast on different parts of the screen, offering more depth and colour contrast. For supported content, the Samsung Crystal 4K Dynamic TV supports HDR viewing as well.


Complementing the display, is the Crystal 4K Dynamic TV’s multi-channel built-in speakers that supports the company’s Object Tracking Sound Lite (OTS Lite) technology. OTS Lite feature tracks the movement of on-screen elements and produces audio from the corresponding location for a more immersive experience. Additionally, the TV supports Q-Symphony feature for optimising audio from a connected soundbar.

Google Photos rolling out limited early access to Ask Photos AI assistant



Google is experimenting with a new “Ask Photos” AI assistant to make the search for pictures more convenient. The feature was announced at Google I/O 2024 in May and is rolling out to Google Labs users in the US. 


Ask Photos will let users simply ask questions from Google Photos and utilising Google’s Gemini AI models, the app will show results on the basis of the content in the photos accompanied by the photo that is most suited to the answer. 

 


According to Google, users can even Ask Photos to complete tasks such as offering a summary of activities from the last vacation or selecting the best photo from a collection.


“For example, you can ask for suggestions for the best photos from your birthday party for a shared album or for help summarising the top things you did on your recent trip to share with a friend,” said Google in its blog.


Google Photos’ last tab transitions into ‘Ask’, accompanied by a bottom search bar where users can enter questions in natural language. Ask Photos shows the stages of the process as “Thinking,” “Searching,” and “Reviewing,” and the Gemini logo is displayed throughout the process. Even if Ask Photos is unable to find the photos, it will offer clues and details to help the user.


Users can sign up for the waitlist to access Ask Photos on Google’s website. Google will let users switch to the old way of searching images anytime while asking Google Photos but Google is now also upgrading the “classic search” to let users ask for pictures in a conversational way. Users can also sort the search results by date or relevance. This feature is rolling out widely on Android and iOS in English with support for more languages rolling out in upcoming weeks.


Google has said that Google Photos is not used for ads and is protected with the industry-leading security measures. In order to incorporate the new change, Google Photos introduced the new collection page to replace the Library tab to make it easier to search for photos and videos.

China’s Vivo has announced that it will soon be launching its new T3 Ultra smartphone in India. The company said that the upcoming smartphone will be the segment’s slimmest with a curved display, measuring 7.58mm in thickness. OpenAI said on Thursday it has more than 1 million paying users across its business products, ChatGPT Enterprise, Team and Edu, as the AI firm’s chatbot continues to see strong adoption owing to its advanced large language model.

The figure is a rise from the 600,000 users it had in April, indicating that CEO Sam Altman’s push to get enterprises to adopt ChatGPT for corporate use is paying off.


Separately, the Information reported on Thursday that OpenAI executives have discussed higher-priced subscriptions for upcoming large-language models such as its reasoning-focused Strawberry and a new flagship LLM dubbed Orion.

 

In early internal talks at OpenAI, subscription prices ranging up to $2,000 per month were discussed, the report said, citing one person with direct knowledge of the numbers.


ChatGPT Plus currently costs $20 a month. The free tier of the model is used by hundreds of millions of users every month.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is working on “Strawberry” with the aim to enabling AI models to perform deep research, Reuters exclusively reported earlier in July.

Strawberry includes a specialized way of what is known as “post-training” OpenAI’s generative AI models, or adapting the base models to hone their performance in specific ways after they have already been “trained” on reams of generalized data, the report said.


The reported pricing discussions come after media reports said Apple and chip giant Nvidia were in talks to invest in OpenAI as part of a new fundraising round that could value the ChatGPT maker above $100 billion.

The AI startup behind the wildly popular ChatGPT application last week said the chatbot had amassed more than 200 million weekly active users, doubling from the number it had in the last fall season.

Qualcomm has explored the possibility of acquiring portions of Intel’s design business to boost the company’s product portfolio, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
 
The mobile chipmaker has examined acquiring different pieces of Intel, which is struggling to generate cash and looking to shed business units and sell off other assets, the people said.
 
Intel’s client PC design business is of significant interest to Qualcomm executives, one of the sources said, but they are looking at all of the company’s design units.
 
Other pieces of Intel such as the server segment would make less sense for Qualcomm to acquire, another source with knowledge of Qualcomm’s operations said.

 
 

Qualcomm has not approached Intel about a potential acquisition and declined to comment on its plans, an Intel spokesperson said. Intel is “deeply committed to our PC business,” the spokesperson said.
 
Qualcomm declined to comment.
 
The $184 billion Qualcomm, which is known for chips found in smartphones and counts Apple as a customer, has been working on plans to buy pieces of Intel for months. Qualcomm’s interest and plans have not been finalized and could change, according to the sources.
 
The two sources declined to be named as they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

 


Intel reported a disastrous second quarter last month, which included a 15% reduction in its staff and a pause on paying dividends. Executives are grappling with how to continue to fund the company’s manufacturing plans and generate cash.

Its PC client business revenue dropped 8% to $29.3 billion last year, amid overall weakness in the PC market.
Once known for it’s “Intel Inside” marketing campaign, Intel’s client group makes laptop and desktop chips used in machines around the world. Executives have said the introduction of artificial intelligence PCs will drive consumers to upgrade their computers and generate more sales.
