Intel launches Lunar Lake chips to rival Qualcomm in AI PC segment: Details

Intel Core Ultra 200V series processor

American chipmaker Intel has unveiled its latest Core Ultra 200V series processors, also known as Lunar Lake chips, designed to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series processors for PCs.

Intel claims that these new processors deliver enhanced power efficiency without compromising on performance and application compatibility. Additionally, the company announced that PCs powered by Intel’s Core Ultra 200V series will be eligible to receive Copilot+ PC features through an update beginning in November.

For reference, Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC experience is presently exclusive to devices equipped with Arm architecture-based processors, such as the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip. The Copilot+ platform provides unique generative AI capabilities, including advanced image generation tools integrated into applications like Paint and Photos.

However, the devices powered by Arm chips currently enjoy native support for only a limited range of applications. In contrast, Intel’s Core Ultra 200V series processors, built on the x86 architecture, aim to offer the best of both worlds.

Intel said that PC manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, and Samsung are developing devices powered by the Core Ultra 200V series processors, which will be available worldwide starting September 24.

Intel said that Core Ultra 200V series processors consume up to 50 per cent less energy compared to its predecessor. Additionally, it can perform up to 120 tera operations per second (TOPS) across various components, including the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), and neural processing unit (NPU).

As for handling AI workloads, the company said that the fourth-generation NPU is four times more powerful than the previous generation, making on-device AI processing faster.

With the Core Ultra 200V series processors, Intel has also introduced its new Xe2 graphics microarchitecture that the company said offers significant improvement in graphics processing.

The integrated Intel Arc GPU on the new processors feature eight second generation Xe cores and eight ray tracing units. Ray Tracing is a graphic processing technique that simulates realistic lighting and shadow, offering more life-like graphics in games and creative apps. It also adds support for up to three 4K resolution monitors.

Instagram allows publicly visible comments for stories but with limitations: Instagram new feature

Instagram allows publicly visible comments for stories but with limitations: Instagram new feature

Instagram allows Comments in Stories

Instagram is incorporating comments into stories on the platform. The social media platform announced the new feature, “Comments in Stories,” a few days ago during the launch of Creator Lab in India and has confirmed the feature through a post by their official instagram account.

“You can now leave comments on friends’ Stories to show them some love”, read the post.

Previously, Instagram did not offer any way to publicly comment on stories of others but the new feature allows users to comment on someone’s stories, with these comments visible to other users.

The Meta-owned social media platform also has two limitations to the feature. One of the limitations is that the comments are visible to only those who follow the user posting the stories. Additionally, only the people that the user follows back can leave comments on their stories. These restrictions have been included in an effort to prevent trolling.

Comments on stories will be viewable for 24 hours following the story’s posting. If the story is saved as a highlight on the profile, the comments will remain. Instagram allows users to disable comments on a per-story basis. Instagram spokesperson Emily Norfolk told technology news website The Verge that users will have the option to turn comments on or off for any Story they share.

Instagram has recently rolled out a new feature that enables users to add text to their photos directly within the post editor, eliminating the need for an external app for photo editing. Instagram has also launched new text fonts, effects, and animations for Reels and Stories.

The Meta-owned platform has unveiled a new feature that lets users add a song to their profile. The chosen music will be shown in the bio section of the user’s profile, based on screenshots released by Instagram. Users can remove or change the song whenever they like.

Social media giant Meta Platforms will inform Brazilians how it intends to use their personal data to train generative artificial intelligence (AI), it said on Tuesday, following a demand from the country’s data protection watchdog.

Meta’s users in Brazil will receive the warnings starting on Tuesday by email and notifications on Facebook and Instagram, and will be able to reject the use of their data by the firm to train generative AI, it said in a statement.

Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) in July suspended Meta’s new privacy policy over the use of personal data to train AI, but overturned this last Friday saying Meta had agreed to issue the disclosures.

In July, Meta also actively suspended the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, which included tools used to create popular AI-made stickers for messaging platform WhatsApp. Brazil is WhatsApp’s second-largest customer base.

At the time, Meta said it had decided to suspend the tools while it was in talks with ANPD to address the authority’s doubts over its use of generative AI.

Asked by Reuters on Tuesday if it would resume the tools after ANPD lifted the suspension, Meta only reaffirmed that the suspension had been issued while it was in talks with the ANPD.

Nvidia gets subpoena from US Justice dept as antitrust probe deepens

Nvidia gets subpoena from US Justice dept as antitrust probe deepens

Last month, the Information reported the Department of Justice had launched an investigation into company after complaints from competitors that it had abused its market dominance | Photo: Bloomberg

The US Department of Justice has sent a subpoena to Nvidia as it deepens its probe into the AI heavyweight’s antitrust practices, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the investigation.

The antitrust watchdog had previously delivered questionnaires, and has now sent legally binding requests to Nvidia, the report said, adding that other companies had also received subpoenas.

Officials are concerned that the chipmaker is making it harder to switch to other suppliers and penalizes buyers that do not exclusively use its artificial intelligence chips, the report said.

“Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and value to customers, who can choose whatever solution is best for them,” a spokesperson for the company said.

Last month, the Information reported the Department of Justice had launched an investigation into the company after complaints from competitors that it had abused its market dominance.

The subpoena comes at a delicate time for AI-related companies as investors recalibrate expectations around the technology amid worries about slow payoffs from hefty investments in it.

The company said last week it has received requests for information from regulators in the US and South Korea, regarding its investments, partnerships and agreements with other companies. It has also received inquiries from the EU, UK and China.

Nvidia’s quarterly forecast, which fell short of investors’ expectations last week, has also softened the optimism around AI.

The company’s shares fell 1.5 per cent in extended trading on Tuesday after losing 9.5 per cent in the regular session, slashing Nvidia’s market capitalization by $279 billion, a record one-day loss for any company.

The shares, however, are still up 141 per cent so far this year, thanks to a dizzying rally sparked by AI expectations.

The DoJ declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

No link between mobile phones, brain cancer, finds WHO-backed study

No link between mobile phones, brain cancer, finds WHO-backed study

The agency’s advisory group has called for the classification to be re-evaluated as soon as possible given the new data since its last assessment in 2011.

There is no link between mobile phone use and an increased risk of brain cancer, according to a new World Health Organization-commissioned review of available published evidence worldwide.

Despite the huge rise in the use of wireless technology, there has not been a corresponding increase in the incidence of brain cancers, the review, published on Tuesday, found. That applies even to people who make long phone calls or those who have used mobile phones for more than a decade.

The final analysis included 63 studies from 1994-2022, assessed by 11 investigators from 10 countries, including the Australian government’s radiation protection authority.

The work assessed the effects of radiofrequency, used in mobile phones as well as TV, baby monitors and radar, co-author Mark Elwood, professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, said.

“None of the major questions studied showed increased risks,” he said. The review looked at cancers of the brain in adults and children, as well as cancer of the pituitary gland, salivary glands and leukemia, and risks linked to mobile phone use, base stations, or transmitters, as well as occupational exposure. Other cancer types will be reported separately.

The review follows other similar work. The WHO and other international health bodies have said previously there is no definitive evidence of adverse health effects from the radiation used by mobile phones, but called for more research. It is currently classified as “possibly carcinogenic”, or class 2B, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a category used when the agency cannot rule out a potential link.

The agency’s advisory group has called for the classification to be re-evaluated as soon as possible given the new data since its last assessment in 2011.

WHO’s evaluation will be released in the first quarter of next year.
