Instagram launched Creator Lab in India during an event held in Mumbai, offering creator-centric educational resources. At the same event, Meta-owned Instagram announced three new features aimed at increasing engagement on its platform. These features are related to Stories, Notes, and Chats.

One of the new features, “Comments in Stories,” allows users to comment on someone’s stories, with these comments visible to other users. Previously, Instagram permitted comments on posts and reels that were visible exclusively to the user’s followers. Comments on stories will be visible for 24 hours after the story is posted. However, if the story is added to the profile as a highlight, the comments will remain. Instagram may also offer users the option to disable the comments feature on stories.

Expanding on the functionality that allowed users to create stickers from image cutouts, Instagram will soon extend this capability to chats within the platform. Users will be able to use cutouts of images from their device as stickers in chats.

Instagram is also planning to introduce Birthday Notes. This feature will display a birthday hat icon in the Notes section on a user’s birthday. Users must opt in to use this feature, and the same privacy settings as the standard Notes feature will apply to Birthday Notes.

Additionally, Instagram has recently launched a feature that allows users to add text directly to their photos within the post editor, eliminating the need for external editing apps. Users can now also overlay one photo on top of another as a sticker within the editor. The update includes new text fonts, effects, and animations for Reels and Stories.

iPhone 16 series: Apple's multi-function capture button to improve imaging

iPhone 16 series: Apple's multi-function capture button to improve imaging

Representative image: iPhone 15 Pro cameras

Apple is expected to introduce several new features and changes with its iPhone 16 series, including a dedicated camera button known as the “Capture Button.” This physical button is anticipated to offer enhanced control over camera features using touch gestures.

Capture Button on iPhone 16 series: What to expect

The Capture Button is likely to be positioned on the bottom right side of the frame on all four iPhone 16 series models. Similar to the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the Capture Button is expected to be capacitive. However, according to a report by The Information, it may also feature a hybrid mechanism with a clicking function.

The hybrid design could introduce new imaging capabilities to the iPhone 16 series. The capacitive aspect may allow users to swipe on the button to zoom in and out, while the pressing mechanism might activate a “Half-press” function. According to The Information, a light press on the Capture Button would bring the image into focus, while a firmer press would capture the picture. This Half-press function, found on Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras, could enhance the iPhone’s imaging performance. A light press would lock both the exposure level and focus, allowing users to adjust the frame more freely.

Furthermore, pressing the Capture Button from the home screen is expected to launch the Camera app, thereby freeing up the Action Button for users who prefer to set up the camera as their quick launch option.

Apple to release iPhone intelligence features in batches: Check timeline

Apple to release iPhone intelligence features in batches: Check timeline

iPhone 15 Pro Max with Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is anticipated to be a major draw for the next-generation iPhone, the iPhone 16 series. However, Apple’s suite of artificial intelligence features is not expected to be fully available on the new iPhones at launch. While some AI features, such as Apple’s text writing assistance and text summarisation tools, are expected to debut in October, more advanced features, such as image generation tools, might not be available until late 2024 or early 2025.

Apple Intelligence: Expected timeline

iOS 18: September

Reportedly, the upcoming iPhone 16 series will debut with iOS 18 sans intelligence feature, but will get writing and text summarisation tools by October, and more AI features with subsequent iOS updates.

iOS 18.1: October

Apple has begun rolling out beta versions of iOS 18.1, which includes select Apple Intelligence features such as writing tools, notification summaries, webpage summaries in Safari, and Clean-up in the Photos app. The stable version of iOS 18.1 for end users is expected to be released in October. The following AI features are anticipated to roll out with iOS 18.1:

  • Clean-up: An AI-powered image editing tool in the Photos app that allows users to remove unwanted background objects.

  • Writing Tools: AI-powered writing tools such as Proofread, Rewrite, Summarise, and more will be available on native iPhone apps including Notes, Mail, and Messages.

  • Movie Memory: An AI-powered video generation feature that uses images and videos on the device to create a video based on user descriptions.

  • Smart Reply: AI-suggested replies in native apps such as Messages and Mail.

  • Notification Summary: This feature generates summaries for multiple notifications from an app, grouping them together for an at-a-glance view, and also includes notifications from third-party apps.

  • Webpage Summary: A feature for Safari’s Reader view mode that summarises text on web pages.

  • Redesigned Siri: Although OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration into Siri will come at a later date, Siri with iOS 18.1 will feature a redesigned interface and improved natural language processing capabilities.

Subsequent iOS 18 update

More advanced AI-powered features, such as Genmoji and the Image Playground app, are expected to be available on eligible iPhones by December. Genmoji allows users to generate custom emojis using AI, while the Image Playground app creates images based on user input and style preferences. AI-powered Siri functions and system-wide ChatGPT integration are expected to be available by early 2025.

Eligible iPhones for Apple Intelligence

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max from the current generation line-up are the only models to get Apple Intelligence feature mentioned above. These intelligence features will be available by default in the upcoming iPhone 16 series, which is expected to get more advanced AI features in future that may not be supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Google releases Gmail Q&A feature on Android, coming soon to iOS: Know more

Google releases Gmail Q&A feature on Android, coming soon to iOS: Know more

Google has announced that the Gmail Q&A feature is gradually being rolled out on Android and will soon be available on iOS. Previously, Google introduced the Gemini AI chatbot for the Gmail side panel on the web, and now this functionality will extend to mobile devices. The new feature allows users to locate specific details in their emails, view only unread messages, filter emails from particular senders, or get summaries of emails on specific topics.

“Gmail Q&A offers similar functionality to the side panel on the web. You can ask Gemini questions about your inbox or request actions such as finding specific details in your emails, showing unread messages, viewing messages from a specific sender, or summarising emails about a topic in your inbox,” Google stated in a Workspace Update blog post.

To access the new feature on your device, smart features and personalisation must be enabled. The Gemini icon will appear next to the user’s profile avatar. Once Gemini is opened in the Gmail app, the Q&A feature can be used to locate content from the inbox. By tapping the Gemini icon, users can enter a prompt in the text field labelled “How can I help you?” The Q&A feature allows users to request unread emails from a specific time period, and the app will display the results after applying suitable filters. Google Drive content will also be accessible via this feature in the future. The Q&A feature records session history and offers a “Clear history” option.

This feature is available to Google One AI Premium subscribers and Google Workspace customers with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons.

Google has indicated that it may take up to 15 days for the update to reach all users’ devices. The arrival of Gemini to the Gmail app was announced during the I/O developer conference.
