Google permits playlist sharing from YouTube Music to Apple Music: How-to

Apple Music and YouTube Music

Google has unveiled a playlist portability feature allowing users to transfer their music playlists from YouTube Music to Apple Music. A support document released by Google details that users can now share a copy of their playlists with other music streaming platforms. However, at present, Apple Music is the only platform supported for this feature. Earlier this week, Apple revealed that Apple Music subscribers can now move their playlists to YouTube Music.

This collaboration is not new; Apple and Google have previously worked together on data transfer functionalities. Both companies support transferring photos directly between iCloud Photos and Google Photos through the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI).

YouTube Music to Apple Music: What can be transferred

Google specifies that only playlists created by users can be transferred. Playlists saved from other users cannot be ported. Furthermore, transferring a playlist is a one-time action; any changes made to the playlist on YouTube Music or Apple Music after the transfer will not be reflected on the other platform.

YouTube Music to Apple Music: How to transfer playlists

Before initiating the transfer, ensure you have an active Apple Music subscription.

  • Visit myaccount.google.com/dashboard.

  • Go to “Recently used Google services” or “Other Google services.”

  • Scroll down to the YouTube option and select “Transfer Data.”

  • Choose the data you wish to copy and click on Continue.

  • Select Apple Music as your destination from the drop-down menu and click Continue.

  • Follow the steps to link your accounts and transfer your playlists.

  • You will need to sign in to your Apple Music account and authorise Google Takeout. Once the transfer is complete, you will receive an email with a link to locate your playlists in Apple Music.

Transferring playlists to other music services

According to its support document, Google suggests using third-party services to export YouTube playlists, albums, artists, and tracks to platforms lacking native support. Recommended third-party services include Soundiiz and TuneMyMusic.

Apple Music to YouTube Music: How to transfer playlists

  • To transfer playlists, you need an active Apple Music subscription and a YouTube Music account.

  • To start the transfer process, visit Apple’s Data and Privacy page (privacy.apple.com) and sign in with your Apple ID.

  • Select the “Transfer a copy of your data” option and follow the on-screen instructions to start the data transfer to YouTube Music.

  • Sign in to the YouTube Music account to which you want to transfer your data.

  • Apple will send a notification to the email ID associated with your Apple ID when the transfer process begins and when it is completed.

  • You can also check the transfer progress on Apple’s Data and Privacy page.

OpenAI's ChatGPT growth continues: 200 million weekly users and counting

OpenAI's ChatGPT growth continues: 200 million weekly users and counting

AI research and deployment company OpenAI announced on Thursday that its chatbot, ChatGPT, now boasts over 200 million weekly active users, a figure that has doubled since the same time last year.

Launched in 2022, ChatGPT is designed to produce human-like responses based on user inputs. Chief Executive of OpenAI Sam Altman previously reported in November that the chatbot had reached 100 million weekly active users.

OpenAI also revealed that 92 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are now using its products. Additionally, usage of its automated Application Programming Interface (API), which facilitates communication between software programmes, has also doubled since the introduction of ChatGPT-4o mini in July.

The GPT-4o mini model is a smaller, more cost-effective AI designed to reduce both costs and energy consumption, thus making OpenAI’s technology accessible to a wider range of customers.

ChatGPT has boosted the popularity of AI, contributing to a rapid increase in the valuation of OpenAI, which is based in San Francisco.

Separately, both OpenAI and another AI startup, Anthropic, have entered into agreements with the US government for the research, testing, and evaluation of their AI models, according to the US Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute.

Apple to invest in OpenAI

Apple and Nvidia are in discussions to invest in OpenAI as part of a new funding round that could value the company at over $100 billion. Microsoft, an existing backer of OpenAI, is also expected to participate in the investment.

OpenAI has grown more crucial to Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy, with the iPhone maker introducing the AI firm’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to Apple devices in June under the ‘Apple Intelligence’ initiative.

It was also reported that Apple would take on an observer role on OpenAI’s board.

The company, led by Sam Altman, was reportedly valued at $80 billion in February following a deal in which it sold existing shares through a tender offer orchestrated by Thrive Capital.

Uber CEO says growth in South Korea promising despite 'underdog' status

Uber CEO says growth in South Korea promising despite 'underdog' status

Uber Technologies Inc’s CEO on Friday expressed commitment to the South Korean market, where it is an underdog to local tech group Kakao , and said the platform will attract more taxi drivers for growth.

“The fact is that a taxi driver who uses the Uber app will make more money, will be more busy,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told reporters in Seoul.

“We are growing significantly faster than the market, and we’re confident that our market share will only grow from here.” Kakao has a more than 90 per cent market share of taxi-hailing, estimated based on app usage data.

Uber first entered the South Korean market in 2013, but pulled out due to regulations that only allow companies with taxi licenses to offer ride services.

In 2021, Uber re-entered the market by setting up a joint venture with South Korea’s second-largest conglomerate SK Group, called UT.

UT’s taxi-hailing service was rebranded as Uber Taxi in March this year.

Khosrowshahi said about 20 per cent of South Korean taxi drivers were on the Uber Taxi platform, and that the number of passengers grew nearly 80 per cent year-on-year during the first half of 2024, including a more than doubling of the usage by international travellers to South Korea since the rebranding.

Apple and chip giant Nvidia are reportedly in talks to invest in OpenAI as part of a new fundraising round that could value the ChatGPT maker above $100 billion, according to media reports on Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on Apple’s interest, citing sources, while Bloomberg News reported on Nvidia’s potential involvement.

The news comes a day after the Journal reported that venture capital firm Thrive Capital would invest around $1 billion in OpenAI, leading the funding round.

Apple and OpenAI not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment, while Thrive Capital, Nvidia and Microsoft declined comment.

OpenAI has become increasingly important to Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy, with the iPhone maker bringing the AI firm’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to Apple devices in June as part of “Apple Intelligence.”

Apple was also reported to gain an observer role on OpenAI’s board.

Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest strategic investor with over $10 billion invested, is also expected to participate in the funding round, according to the WSJ report.

The exact investment amounts from Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia remain undisclosed.

OpenAI’s high valuation is a result of the AI arms race it sparked with the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, prompting companies across industries to invest billions in the technology to stay ahead of the competition and capture market share.

The Sam Altman-led firm was reportedly valued at $80 billion in February after completing a deal where the company would sell existing shares in a so-called tender offer led by Thrive Capital.

Elon Musk, Tesla beat suit over promoting Dogecoin 'pyramid scheme'

Elon Musk, Tesla beat suit over promoting Dogecoin 'pyramid scheme'

Elon Musk and Tesla Inc. won dismissal of a lawsuit claiming they pumped up the price of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin into a $258 billion “pyramid scheme.”

Investors who lost tens of thousands of dollars investing in the cryptocurrency faulted Musk for promoting the token to his millions of Twitter followers with statements like “One word: Doge,” causing its price to increase. Musk further inflated the price by then announcing that Tesla would accept Dogecoin as payment for merchandise, according to the 2022 complaint.

A New York federal judge dismissed the claims on Thursday, finding that Musk’s statements were “aspirational” rather than “factual and susceptible to being falsified” and “no reasonable investor could rely upon them.”

The investors had also accused Musk and Tesla of participating in a “pump and dump” scheme with Dogecoin, but US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein wrote that it was “not possible to understand” those allegations.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs had no immediate comment.

The Dogecoin cryptocurrency was the original memecoin — a type of cryptocurrency that originated from internet memes or jokes. Its logo is a picture of a Shiba Inu dog.

Boeing's uncrewed Starliner capsule could return by late next week: Nasa

Boeing's uncrewed Starliner capsule could return by late next week: Nasa

Starliner has previously completed a successful uncrewed entry and landing during two orbital flight tests, said Nasa | File Photo

Nasa will proceed with the undocking of the uncrewed Boeing Starliner capsule not before September 6, the space agency said on Thursday after concluding a review.

Last week, the space agency said its two astronauts who flew to the International Space Station (ISS) in the Starliner in June will return to Earth in a SpaceX vehicle early next year.

Starliner’s propulsion system issues were deemed too risky for crewed return after the capsule experienced a series of glitches within the first 24 hours of its flight to the ISS.

The journey back to Earth for the Starliner is expected to take approximately six hours from undocking to landing at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico, Nasa said in a blog post.

Ground teams will remotely guide the spacecraft through necessary manoeuvres for a safe undocking, re-entry and parachute-assisted landing in southwestern United States.
