India among critical tech leaders, behind only US and China in AI



India has emerged as a global research powerhouse, ranking among the top five countries in 45 out of 64 critical technologies in 2023, up from 37 a year before. According to the Critical Technology Tracker report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the country has secured the second position in seven technologies.


In 2023, India also overtook the US to claim the second spot in two emerging fields of technological research: biological manufacturing and distributed ledger technology.

 


In the fast-evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), India ranks just behind the US and China in various key segments, including advanced data analytics, AI algorithm, hardware accelerator, machine learning, advanced integrated circuit design and fabrication, natural language processing, and adversarial AI.

 


This marks a big leap from 2003–2007, when India ranked in the top five for only four technologies, according to the report. The tracker covers critical technologies across a wide range of fields, including space, defence, energy, environment, AI, robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, advanced computing, advanced material, and quantum technology. It compiles data spanning from 2003 to 2023, tracking high-impact research —defined as the top 10 per cent of the most-cited papers — as an indicator of a country’s research performance, strategic goals, and future technological potential.

 


China tops the global research charts, dominating in 57 out of 64 critical technologies. In contrast, the US, which led in 60 technologies between 2003 and 2007, now holds the top spot in just seven areas (based on 2019-2023 rankings), including quantum computing and vaccine and medical countermeasures.

 

The UK has also seen a decline in its standing, now ranking in the top five in 37 technologies, down from 44 last year. The European Union, counted as a bloc, leads in two areas — small satellite and gravitational force sensor — and ranks second in 30. Germany remains strong, placing in the top five for 27 technologies.

 


Although India has yet to lead in any critical technology, it has secured the second position in areas such as high-specific machine process, advanced composite material, mesh and infrastructure-independent network, smart material, and biofuel.

 


India also ranks third in several key technologies, including electronic warfare, autonomous underwater vehicle, sonar and acoustic sensor, photonic sensor, post-quantum cryptography, photovoltaic, nuclear waste management, supercapacitor, and advanced aircraft engine.

 


However, the report highlights a big drawback of India’s research efforts: the lack of standout research performers. Only five Indian institutions feature in the top five across the 64 technologies over the past two decades (2003-2023).

 


“This lack of standout performers (where research is very fragmented) may be limiting India’s ability to attract foreign research talent and motivate Indian scientists and technologists to stay at, or come back to Indian institutions,” the report observes.

Infosys on Thursday said it has expanded its partnership with American chipmaker Nvidia to develop GenAI-powered solutions for telecom operators.


The IT major has developed three generative AI solutions powered by its AI-offering Topaz, which make use of Nvidia NIM inference microservices, Nvidia NeMo Retriever embedding models, and NeMo Guardrails to customise and deploy generative AI telco domain-specific large-language models.


It has also used Nvidia Riva to allow real-time transcription and translations for call centre agents, according to a regulatory filing.


“Telcos are increasingly adopting generative AI solutions to improve the productivity of their businesses with smarter networks, more efficient operations, and enhanced customer service.


“Leveraging Nvidia’s full-stack accelerated computing and AI platform, Infosys Topaz is delivering a suite of domain-specific solutions that will help telcos accelerate and streamline their adoption of generative AI,” Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President of Telecom at Nvidia, said.


These generative-AI solutions have resulted in up to 61 per cent lower latency and 22 per cent absolute improvement in accuracy, the filing said.


Shares of Infosys settled 0.35 per cent lower at Rs 1,932.40 apiece on the BSE.

Apple has released the third developer beta of iOS 18.1, which includes additional Apple Intelligence features like “Clean Up” in Photos to remove background objects and enhanced notification summaries. In conjunction with the iOS 18.1 beta, Apple has also made public beta 6 of iOS 18 available. This new public beta is expected to be the last update before the stable version of the operating system is rolled out to users.


Jio will launch the “AI Cloud Welcome Offer” this Diwali to make artificial intelligence more accessible, as announced by Reliance Industries’ chairman Mukesh Ambani during the company’s annual general meeting on August 29. The service will offer users up to 100GB of free cloud storage along with data-driven AI services.


China’s Realme has introduced the Realme 13 series in India, featuring the Realme 13 5G and Realme 13 Plus 5G smartphones. The Realme 13 Plus is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset, while the standard model uses the MediaTek Dimensity 6300. Both models come with options for 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, with the Plus variant offering up to 12GB of RAM and the base model featuring up to 8GB of RAM.


Google is now allowing Gemini subscribers to create custom chatbots known as Gems. Users can personalise these chatbots with various attributes by providing specific instructions. To get started, users just need to name their chatbot, give it instructions, and begin using it.


At the Made by Google event in August, Google unveiled an enhancement to its gesture-driven “Circle to Search” feature, enabling users to highlight portions of an image. This new capability has begun rolling out, allowing users to swiftly share the circled sections, much like a screenshot, with others.


Lenovo-owned Motorola has set the launch date for its budget-friendly flip-style foldable smartphone, the Razr 50, in India for September 9. According to a social media post on platform X, the Razr 50 will be available on Motorola’s official website and Amazon India. Apple has reportedly updated the Mac App Store in the latest macOS Sequoia beta, enabling users to install large apps directly onto external storage. As per reports,  the latest macOS 15.1 developer beta 3 allows users to install apps larger than 1GB on an external Hard Disk Drive or Solid State Drive.


Apple has announced that users can now transfer playlists directly from Apple Music to YouTube Music. Although third-party apps have offered this feature before, this is the first time Apple has provided native support for it. Additionally, Apple has released a support document outlining the steps for transferring playlists from Apple Music to YouTube Music.

Google Cloud on Thursday said it has partnered with IT firm Wipro to integrate Gemini Code Assist into the latter’s development workflows.


Gemini Code Assist is an AI-powered collaborator that helps developers write, review, and debug code more efficiently.


This collaboration will enhance developer productivity, improve code quality, and encourage innovation, a company statement said.


“At Wipro we are using conversational AI/Gen AI technology to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of the work done by associates on an individual basis. Tools like Google Cloud’s Gemini Code Assist will significantly enhance first party productivity among our developers enabling them to deliver higher quality solutions more efficiently,” Wipro Limited Chief Information Officer Anup Purohit said.


Integrating Gemini Code Assist will accelerate development cycles, reduce errors, and enable developers to focus on higher-level problem-solving, the statement said.

Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Thursday announced that the company will make efforts to ‘democratise’ artificial intelligence (AI) by building AI-ready data centres in Gujarat’s Jamnagar.
 
During his address at the 47th annual general meeting (AGM), Ambani said that under Reliance’s telecom arm Jio’s ‘AI everywhere for everyone’ vision, the company plans to offer AI and related services to Indians at affordable prices.


“To achieve this, we are laying the groundwork for a truly national AI infrastructure. We plan to establish gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centres in Jamnagar, powered entirely by Reliance’s green energy, reflecting our commitment to sustainability…,” Ambani said.

 


“This will make AI applications in India more affordable than anywhere else, making AI accessible to all,” he added.

 


As part of the ‘AI everywhere for everyone’ vision, Ambani announced Jio ‘AI-Cloud Welcome’ offer for Jio users, in which customers will be offered 100 GB of free cloud storage. The offer will be rolled out during the festival of Deepavali.

 


Jamnagar holds special significance for the Ambani family as the place where Mukesh Ambani’s father, Dhirubhai Ambani, began their business. It is also the birthplace of Kokilaben Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s mother.

 


During the address, Ambani also shared Reliance’s plans to transform Jamnagar into the “energy capital of the world.” He said that by 2025, Jamnagar will be at the heart of Reliance’s New Energy business as he referred to the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Manufacturing Complex. The company plans to invest Rs 75,000 crore to create one of the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities, which will be spread over 5,000 acres in Jamnagar.

 


At the event, Ambani hailed India as a driving force in global trade and said that Reliance was committed to national interests. We are not in the business of hoarding wealth but creating wealth and energy security for India, he said.

Google introduces custom chatbot creation with Gems for Gemini subscribers



Google is now offering Gemini subscribers the ability to create custom chatbots called Gems. These chatbots can be personalised with different characteristics through specific instructions. Users simply need to name the chatbot, provide it with instructions, and start using it.


“You can create and save Gems to customize responses in Gemini Apps to your specific needs,” said Google.


For users who prefer not to create a personalised chatbot, Google’s pre-made Gems will be available. Customised chatbots are particularly useful for repetitive tasks, as they eliminate the need to provide instructions separately each time.


Gems were first introduced by Google during its I/O event in May and are now rolling out to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise users on both mobile and desktop. The Gems feature is paid and available in over 150 countries and more than 30 languages.


Google’s introduction of Gems appears to be a move to keep up with OpenAI, which last year announced custom GPTs accessible through the GPT Store, allowing users to create their own personalised GPTs.


Google has noted that Gems cannot be used to generate images and are not compatible with Gemini Live.


Google resumes image generation with Gemini AI chatbot


Google has also resumed offering users the ability to generate images of people using its Gemini AI chatbot. Google announced on its blog that it will release an early access version of this feature to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users in English in the coming days. Google’s AI text-to-image generator, Imagen 3, was launched earlier this month and will be available on Gemini across all languages.


Google had previously stopped allowing Gemini to generate images of people after it produced historically inaccurate images. The resumption of image generation on Gemini will be powered by an upgraded Imagen 3 with built-in safety measures.
