Image analysis and editing on Meta AI

At its Connect event, Meta announced several new features for the Meta AI chatbot alongside new AR glasses and a mixed reality headset. These enhancements include a new voice feature, the ability to analyse and edit images, and improved integration into platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Here is everything new coming to Meta AI:

Meta AI voice

Soon, users can engage in voice conversations with Meta AI on Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Additionally, various voice options will be available for the AI assistant, including voices of Awkwafina, Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kristen Bell.

Image analysis and editing on Meta AI

The Meta AI chatbot now has the capability to understand visuals, allowing users to share images and receive information about them. For example, users can share a picture of a plant and prompt Meta AI to identify its species.

Furthermore, Meta AI can make changes to shared images upon request. Users can ask the chatbot to add, remove, or alter elements in an image. For instance, they might prompt the AI to change the background of a group photo.

Meta AI translation

Meta is testing a new AI translation tool that will automatically translate the audio of Reels. This feature enables automatic dubbing and lip syncing and is currently available to select creators on Instagram and Facebook, translating between English and Spanish.

Meta AI on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger

Meta is expanding the Imagine features of Meta AI, allowing users to edit their images with AI-generated elements directly in their feed, Stories, and Facebook profile pictures. These AI-generated images are shareable, and users can even replicate images shared by friends. Additionally, a new background feature for Instagram Stories uses Meta AI to generate a custom background when sharing an image from the feed.

Meta has also announced that it is testing AI-generated content in Facebook and Instagram feeds. Soon, users will see AI-generated content tailored to their interests and current trends.

Microsoft to integrate Game Pass within its Xbox app on iOS and Android: Technology news

Microsoft to integrate Game Pass within its Xbox app on iOS and Android: Technology news

Microsoft is upgrading its Xbox app to incorporate Game Pass features, transforming it into a one-stop destination for mobile gamers. In a significant shift in its mobile app strategy, the American software company is discontinuing the Game Pass app and integrating its features into the Xbox app for iOS.

Microsoft shared the announcement on Xbox Wire, Xbox’s official platform. As part of a broader series of changes across its platforms, this update will initially be available to Xbox beta members on iOS and Android, with a wider release to follow. Consequently, the Xbox Game Pass app will no longer be available for new downloads starting in November. Users can still download the Game Pass app from the App Store while it remains available.

“Key features—like the ability to explore Game Pass and manage your membership—will now be found in one place with the Xbox app on mobile. You’ll be able to browse the full Game Pass catalog to find your favourite games and receive alerts for new games coming to the service. If you’re a Game Pass Ultimate member, you’ll also be able to view and claim your perks. Game Pass Ultimate members can stream select games through Xbox Cloud Gaming on their iOS or Android devices using a supported browser at xbox.com/play,” Microsoft stated.

With the integration of Game Pass features, users will be able to manage their memberships, explore the Game Pass catalogue, and claim perks if they are Game Pass Ultimate members. The app will continue to offer existing features such as remote game installation, party chat, and social sharing.

Additionally, the new Game Bar Compact Mode is now live for PC users and is designed for smaller screens, providing easy access to recently played games, game launchers, and widgets. Furthermore, the Xbox app on PC has enhanced game management options, allowing users to see and install all add-ons during game installation and keeping track of game content in one place.

A new feature for Xbox console users enables pre-downloading of game updates, allowing players to start games immediately when the updates go live. The redesigned wish list system now offers notifications for when games are released, added to Game Pass, or available during Free Play Days.

Meta Connect: Orion AR glasses, cheaper Quest 3S headset, and more unveiled: Technology news

Meta Connect: Orion AR glasses, cheaper Quest 3S headset, and more unveiled: Technology news

Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Orion glasses and Quest 3S headset

At its Meta Connect event on September 25, Facebook’s parent company outlined its vision for creating a comprehensive augmented reality (AR) experience while further expanding in the mixed reality (MR) space. During the event, the company unveiled the Orion AR glasses, currently a prototype, which creates a virtual space without obstructing vision. Meta also introduced an affordable Meta Quest 3S mixed reality headset, alongside new features for the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Meta Orion glasses

Meta said that the new Orion glasses are its most advanced pair of AR glasses. The glasses do not have an opaque screen in front of the eyes; instead, they feature normal-looking transparent lenses, onto which a virtual layer is projected.

Orion glasses incorporate holographic displays, allowing users to place 2D and 3D content wherever they choose. The glasses run on Meta AI, enabling users to understand their physical environment in real time and even visualise information based on it. In a demonstration, the glasses suggested a recipe based on the ingredients available in the user’s refrigerator.

Meta is not yet making the Orion glasses available for purchase, as it will focus on internal development to enhance consumer products.

Meta Quest 3S

Meta also launched the Meta Quest 3S mixed reality headset, which offers similar capabilities to the Quest 3 but at a lower price point. Priced at $299.99 in the US, the Quest 3S headset operates on the Meta Horizon operating system for spatial computing. It features improved support for 2D apps like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram compared to the Quest 2 headset. Additionally, the Quest 3S boasts enhanced spatial audio and better colour and contrast for Passthrough. A Travel mode optimises the headset for use while in transit.

Apart from streaming apps like YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video, the Quest 3S also supports Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is currently in beta. The headset will be compatible with apps and games exclusive to the Quest 3, including the upcoming Batman: Arkham Shadow game.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses

At the Connect event, Meta announced new features for Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The company stated that the glasses will assist users in remembering various tasks, such as the location where they parked their car. Users can now set reminders using voice commands and record and send voice notes directly on Messenger and WhatsApp.

Additionally, Ray-Ban Meta glasses users no longer need to start their prompts with “Hey Meta.” While this phrase is required for the initial question, follow-up questions will not necessitate it, making conversations more natural.

The company is also adding video support for Meta AI on the glasses, allowing it to analyse physical objects in real time. Furthermore, users will soon gain the capability for real-time speech translation.

GoPro Hero 13 Black hands-on: HB-series lenses, magnetic mount lead charge

GoPro Hero 13 Black hands-on: HB-series lenses, magnetic mount lead charge

GoPro Hero 13 Black, HB-Series lenses, and magnetic mount

GoPro has launched the Hero 13 Black, an upgrade to its popular action camera line. Alongside, it has also launched a new model, the Hero, aimed at entry-level users. However, the spotlight remains on the Hero 13 Black, which seeks to serve both beginners and professionals alike. It introduces several new features, most notably a swappable lens system, a first for both GoPro and the action camera segment at large.

Design

At first glance, the Hero 13 Black closely resembles its predecessor, the Hero 12 Black, but there are some subtle yet important design changes. The most notable among these is the new magnetic latch mounting system. GoPro’s traditional finger-based mounting system, while secure, was cumbersome to use. The addition of the magnetic latch should make the mounting process simpler and more efficient.

GoPro HB-series lenses

The most notable new feature of the GoPro Hero 13 Black is its support for swappable HB-series lenses. This is a first for GoPro and brings a level of versatility to action cameras that was previously unavailable. These lenses, sold separately, offer a variety of options, including:

  • A macro lens with variable focus for close-up shots

  • An ultra-wide-angle lens for an expanded point-of-view

  • An anamorphic lens for cinematography-quality capture (coming in 2025)

  • ND filters for dynamic motion blur

These lenses will allow users to customise the GoPro for different shooting conditions, making the Hero 13 Black suitable for a wide range of scenarios from extreme sports to professional filmmaking.

Moreover, GoPro has introduced an auto-detection feature for these lenses, allowing the camera to automatically adjust settings based on the lens type in use. This auto-detect function simplifies the process for users, ensuring optimal capture settings without the need for manual intervention.

Battery

In a notable departure from previous models, the Hero 13 Black features a different battery connector, which means that older GoPro batteries are incompatible with this model. However, GoPro compensates for this by equipping the Hero 13 Black with a new 1900mAh Endure battery. According to GoPro, this battery is more resilient in extreme weather conditions and provides an extended capture time compared to its predecessors. Though its claims are promising, I will reserve my view on the battery life and improvements, if any, for the in-depth review.

Connectivity

Connectivity also sees an upgrade with the Hero 13 Black, as it now supports Wi-Fi 6 for faster media offloading to connected devices. This improvement is especially beneficial for users who rely on quick transfers of high-resolution footage to their smartphones. Furthermore, GPS functionality, which was removed in the Hero 12 Black, makes a welcome return, allowing users to track and overlay location data on their footage.

However, some limitations remain for users in India, as GoPro does not offer its subscription service in the country. This means the cloud-based auto-highlight feature, a useful function for generating quick edits, is unavailable to Indian users. Despite this, the improved Wi-Fi speeds and other connectivity features remain valuable additions.

First impressions

The GoPro Hero 13 Black brings several notable upgrades, from the HB-series lenses to the improved mounting system and connectivity features. These changes may seem small but could have a big impact on user experience. It is shaping up to be a first-of-its-kind action camera. A full review with in-depth testing will follow soon.

GoPro Hero 13 Black: Pricing

  • Camera: Rs 44,990

  • Ultra-wide lens mod: Rs 9,990.

  • Macro lens mod: Rs 12,990

  • ND Filter (Pack of 4 – ND4, ND8, ND16, and ND32): Rs 6,990
