Apple releases iOS 18.1 developer beta 2 with AI features: Check what's new

Apple rolls out iOS 18 developer beta 2

After releasing the initial set of artificial intelligence features with the iOS 18.1 developer beta, Apple has now released the iOS 18.1 beta 2 for developers. While the new beta does not expand the suite of artificial intelligence features, it brings forward features previously introduced in the standard iOS 18 beta cycle. Additionally, it introduces new regional English language support for Apple Intelligence.

It is important to note that the iOS 18.1 beta cycle is limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, as only these smartphones in the current generation support Apple Intelligence.

iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 2: What’s New

Carousel View in Photos App

Apple has made several tweaks to the redesigned Photos app based on user feedback. The company has reportedly removed the new Carousel view feature in iOS 18.1 developer beta 2, following similar changes made in the iOS 18 developer beta 5 last week. Carousel view allowed users to swipe and view picture highlights that were updated daily.

Distraction Control

Apple has introduced the new Distraction Control feature in iOS 18.1 developer beta 2. This feature, which was released last week on the standard iOS 18 beta cycle, allows users to remove certain elements from a webpage that might be distracting. These elements include sign-in pop-ups and overlays.

Apple Intelligence

With iOS 18.1 developer beta 2, Apple has added support for more localised English language dialects to its Apple Intelligence features. These localisation options now include Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Singapore, in addition to the U.S., UK, and Australia, which were added initially.

According to reports, Apple is also rolling out Apple Intelligence features in the European Union (EU) with iOS 18.1 developer beta 2.

Redesigns

Apart from these changes, iOS 18.1 developer beta 2 introduces some user interface improvements. For instance, notifications from apps with a Dark Mode icon enabled will now display the new icon in the notification bar instead of the regular bright icon. Apple has also added a new toggle for enabling Bluetooth in Control Center, separate from the general communication controls.

Elon Musk's interview of Donald Trump hit by DDos attack. Know what it is

In a recent interview with Elon Musk (Left), Donald Trump praised global leaders like Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un while criticising President Joe Biden, claiming his leadership could have prevented the Ukraine invasion. Image: X

Tesla CEO Elon Musk‘s interview of former US President Donald Trump on X was disrupted by a cyber attack. The interview was scheduled for 8PM ET but started after a 40 minutes delay. It also marked the return of the Republican presidential candidate to X after being banned in 2021.

Elon Musk has said that X had faced a DDos attack. “There appears to be a massive DDos attack on X. Working on shutting it down. Worst case, we will proceed with a smaller number of live listeners and post the conversation later,” Elon Musk posted on X.

What is DDos attack

DDos attack stands for Distributed Denial of Service Attack and it overloads a specific server or network with excess internet traffic to disrupt its normal flow of operations. DDos attacks use various compromised computer systems to generate traffic to attack and target other computer systems or networks.

Cloudflare, a cloud cybersecurity company describes it as “a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic.”

A DDos attack can last for hours or days. DDoS attacks are conducted with networks of Internet-connected machines. These networks consist of computers and other devices (such as IoT devices) which have been infected with malware, allowing them to be controlled remotely by an attacker, according to Cloudflare.

Files by Google could include Circle to Search and AI summaries: Report

Files by Google could include Circle to Search and AI summaries: Report

Files by Google has reportedly added a shortcut for Circle to Search while viewing images, according to 9to5Google. When a user views a full screen image, above the edit floating action Button is a smaller action button. Google is reportedly testing two new icons for that smaller action button; one is magnifying glass and AI sparkle that is used for Smart Search capability by Files app and the second is a Google Lens logo. While Circle to Search does not have its own icon, a text box is displayed on the screen which says to Circle or tap anywhere to search.

Tapping anywhere on the image launches the Circle to Search feature. The full image is sent to Circle to Search without any Files by Google UI. This is a server side update for those in the beta channel.

Latest beta (version 1.4515.x) reportedly shows that AI generated summaries are arriving for files containing text. Users would be able to enable or disable this feature in settings. The AI summaries feature is expected to make use of the on-device Gemini Nano technology.

Files by Google had recently reportedly switched to stories like Recents carousel.

Circle to Search feature offers users the convenience to search directly from the screen. Circle to Search was initially introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S24 and is later made available on select Google Pixel devices. Google is also reportedly enhancing the Circle to Search feature by adding an on-screen barcode and QR code scanner. The QR and barcode scanner feature is currently being tested, and it is expected to be widely introduced soon.
