Is your device at risk? CERT-In warns of several high-risk flaws in Android: Government

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning about several security flaws identified in Android devices. These vulnerabilities could allow attackers to access confidential data, gain higher system privileges, or execute arbitrary code remotely.

Devices powered by Qualcomm and MediaTek processors, including Android phones and tablets, are among those affected.

Due to this bug, attackers can gain elevated access without needing additional execution privileges, allowing them to easily disable or bypass your device’s security.

This advisory follows a similar warning from CERT-In concerning vulnerabilities in Apple iPhones earlier this week.

Which Android software versions are affected?

CERT-In specified that Android versions 12, 12L, 13, and 14 are susceptible to these vulnerabilities. The agency noted that the issues arise from flaws within the Android Framework, System, Kernel, as well as components from ARM, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Qualcomm’s proprietary components.

How to be safe from security flaws in Android devices?

To mitigate these risks, CERT-In recommended that users promptly install any updates provided by their device manufacturers. Users should also ensure that their Android devices are operating on the latest available software version, only download apps from trusted sources, and activate automatic updates for both applications and the operating system.

Be cautious and avoid clicking on random messages, emails, or links, particularly those requesting personal information or credentials, as phishing attacks are a common tactic used by hackers to exploit vulnerabilities. If you suspect your device has been compromised, consider performing a factory reset as a last resort. This action will erase all data on your device, including any malware.

‘Severe’ alert for Apple users

Earlier in the week, CERT-In issued a “severe” advisory to Apple users, identifying multiple vulnerabilities across a range of Apple products, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. These vulnerabilities could potentially lead to data breaches, service disruptions, and spoofing attacks. CERT-In has classified these vulnerabilities as having a “High” severity level.

The advisory, dated August 2, highlighted that affected Apple software included iOS and iPadOS versions prior to 17.6 and 16.7.9, macOS Sonoma versions before 14.6, macOS Ventura versions prior to 13.6.8, macOS Monterey versions before 12.7.6, watchOS versions before 10.6, tvOS versions before 17.6, visionOS versions before 1.3, and Safari versions prior to 17.6.

Apple has released the necessary security updates, and users are urged to update their devices to the latest software versions available on Apple’s official website. CERT-In had issued a similar warning in May, emphasising the importance of keeping iPhone software up-to-date to mitigate high-level risks.

CERT-In also recommended that Apple users regularly update their device software to the latest security patches to address these issues. Apple has reiterated the importance of timely software updates, encouraging users to verify that they are running the most current version provided by the company.

Disney Plus set to do away with password sharing starting September: Report

Disney Plus set to do away with password sharing starting September: Report

Streaming platform Disney Plus is planning to prohibit users from sharing their passwords with people outside their household. According to The Verge, Disney CEO Bob Iger said during the earnings call that the crackdown will kick off “in earnest” this September.

Disney Plus has been talking about eliminating password sharing since last September.

The subscription video streaming service had announced to allow paid sharing in February and started notifying users about the same as well. Paid sharing was introduced in select few countries in June but now it appears that password sharing will not be allowed in other countries as well from September. Disney is also reportedly set to raise the prices for Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Plus from October.

Disney reportedly plans to allow subscribers to share their subscription with others outside the household by paying for it, though the price for the same is not announced.

Disney’s subsidiary, called Disney Plus Hotstar, is available in India but it is not certain if this change will apply to the co-branded service.

Netflix ended password sharing in India last year and only allowed members of a household to access one account. In some countries, the streaming platform also offers options for borrower or shared accounts in which extra viewers can be added by the subscribers for a higher price. The company also said that after cracking down on password sharing, it added nearly 6 million new subscribers.

90% women view GenAI as crucial for career growth, says Nasscom-BCG report

90% women view GenAI as crucial for career growth, says Nasscom-BCG report

Women make up 36 per cent of India’s tech workforce; however, they remain underrepresented in executive roles. India lags with a 64 per cent gender disparity in AI leadership compared to global women leaders. As Gen AI adoption increases, the participation of women in the workforce is important for enhancing ethical outcomes in AI, said a report.

While GenAI will act as an equaliser for women in tech, only 35 per cent of surveyed women respondents feel completely prepared by their employers, leading to barriers in adoption, said the report by Nasscom and Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

The report ‘GenAI: The Diversity Game Changer We Can’t Ignore’ by Nasscom and BCG analyses the adoption of AI/GenAI amongst women and outlines actionable steps.

“Globally, senior women lead in GenAI adoption, yet India lags with a 64 per cent gender disparity in AI leadership. To capture the $320 billion AI market, India’s tech sector needs diversity. This will ensure effective systems by eliminating biases and incorporating varying ethical perspectives. Let’s seize this significant opportunity to rectify the gender imbalance in the tech industry,” said Sreyssha George, managing director and partner, Boston Consulting Group.

The report underscored that women are willing to go the extra mile for success in AI/GenAI, with 95 per cent of junior, 96 per cent of mid-management, and 100 per cent of the senior management women (based on survey findings) ready to invest more time to achieve professional success in GenAI.

Sangeeta Gupta, senior vice president and chief strategy officer, Nasscom, said, “Despite significant progress in diversity and AI/GenAI adoption, substantial gaps still limit women’s full potential in the tech industry. With GenAI set to dominate the tech industry, it is critical to address key challenges such as knowledge gaps and lack of support, to empower women, particularly in these roles.”

The report shows that women view Gen AI tools as a significant boost to their perceived competence, with 45 per cent of the surveyed women in tech roles experiencing higher confidence compared to their non-tech peers. Additionally, it outlines that Gen AI adoption is driven by efficiency and innovation, acknowledging its transformative potential.

Gupta further added that by addressing these obstacles and cultivating an inclusive environment, businesses can not only enhance their own success but also contribute to a more equitable and dynamic tech landscape.

The report, based on extensive surveys and interviews with industry leaders, reveals that women rate their professional ambitions as very high, demonstrating greater ambition across all levels. It further highlights the importance of diversity in reducing bias and enhancing ethical outcomes in AI, indicating that diverse teams are better at detecting ethical issues and making decisions that consider others’ well-being.

To bridge this gap, organisations need to play a pivotal role in driving GenAI adoption by creating environments that support and encourage these technologies. The report recommends key actions to boost women’s success in these technologies: defining clear career pathways; guiding through formal and informal mentorship programmes; enabling flexible work arrangements; offering ethical training; building a culture of empowerment, diversity, and inclusion; and fostering networking opportunities. Addressing these needs will empower women to embrace GenAI technologies and drive greater diversity and innovation in the industry.

As GenAI is projected to dominate 33 per cent of the global AI landscape by 2027, the AI market is expected to reach $320-380 billion, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25-35 per cent, said the report.
