Google is set to host the “Made By Google” launch event on August 13 where it is anticipated to launch the next-generation Pixel Watch alongside the upcoming Pixel 9 series smartphones. According to a report by 9To5Google, the Pixel Watch 3 would likely be powered by the same chipset as its predecessor but could get a bigger battery and brighter display. Here are the details-

Google Pixel Watch 3: What to expect

According to the report, the Pixel Watch 3 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100 chip from last year’s Pixel Watch 2. Google’s next-generation smartwatch will also feature a Cortex M33 co-processor paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB on-board storage, similar to its predecessor. However, this year, Google could pack larger batteries on its smartwatches.

Earlier, it was reported that Google could launch two models of the Pixel Watch 3. The standard 41mm model could be joined by a larger 45mm Pixel Watch which is expected to get the “XL” branding. As per 9To5Google, the company is targeting 24 hours battery life with always-on display enabled and up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode for both models. The standard 41mm Pixel Watch 3 would likely get a 307mAh battery while the 45mm Pixel Watch 3 XL is expected to feature a 420mAh battery.

Not much is expected to change on the Pixel Watch 3 series in terms of design, however, both models could get slightly slimmer bezels than last year’s Pixel Watch. It is also likely that the display could be significantly brighter with 2000 nits peak brightness level compared to 1000 nits on the predecessor.

Reddit set to allow exclusive subreddits that are behind paywall: Report

Reddit set to allow exclusive subreddits that are behind paywall: Report

Reddit is reportedly planning on asking users to pay for accessing some subreddits on the platform. According to The Verge, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman during an earnings call hinted at allowing “new types of subreddits that can be built that may have exclusive content or private areas.”

Reports suggest that the American social news aggregation, content rating, and forum social network will allow creation of specific subreddits which will be categorised as exclusive or private content and could go behind paywall.

“I think the existing, altruistic, free version of Reddit will continue to exist and grow and thrive just the way it has,” Huffman said. “But now we will unlock the door for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built.” according to The Verge.

Huffman also mentioned during the call that Reddit is starting to use first-party and third-party AI models to “enhance” its search results. Reddit will start testing AI generated summaries for content which will appear at the top of the search results. This feature will present summaries of the content searched by the user and also offer recommendations.

Reports of Reddit using AI for search first emerged in February this year in light of its AI training deal with Google. The deal also includes Reddit’s access to Google’s vertex AI tool which is helpful in improving search results.

Recently, there were reports of Reddit results not showing up in many search engines, except Google. Reddit has also entered into a partnership with OpenAI to employ OpenAI’s large language models to bring AI powered features to Reddit.

Instagram to make Views as primary metric for content across all formats

Instagram to make Views as primary metric for content across all formats

In an attempt to promote multi-format content, Meta-owned Instagram has announced that “Views” are going to be the primary metric across all media formats including reels, live, photos, carousels and stories.

Creators will now be able to monitor the content using the same metric. The update will be introduced in upcoming weeks. The change was announced in a post from Instagram’ creators account.

“Views will measure the number of times a reel started to play or reply and the number of times a non-reel appeared on a person’s screen. Views will ensure you have the same metric across Instagram and help you better understand how your content is performing, regardless of its format,” say the post titled ‘Instagram Insights Updates.’

“Historically we’ve shown different metrics for Reels vs. other posts, but we want to evolve this so it’s easier to understand how your content is doing regardless of the format,” Instagram chief Adam Mosseri wrote in an Instagram post.

In an accompanying video, he also explains that a view differs from a reach since an individual can view the same piece of content more than once. Adam Mosseri also advises creators to keep an eye on sends per reach as well even if views might be the primary metric as both are “probably the most important metrics for anybody trying to understand how their content is doing on Instagram,”.

Views also became a key metric on threads earlier this year. Users can tap a Threads post to see the total view count. Elon Musk-owned X has also been prioritising view counts.

YouTube Shorts surpass trillion views, CEO Neal Mohan lauds Indian creators

YouTube Shorts surpass trillion views, CEO Neal Mohan lauds Indian creators

YouTube unveiled a range of new ad formats for cTV and Shorts, in an effort to enhance engagement and augment results for brands.

YouTube Shorts, a 60-second video format which made its global debut in India in 2020, has surpassed a trillion views, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced on Wednesday as he highlighted the global impact of Indian content creators.

Mohan, who was speaking at the YouTube Brandcast 2024 event here, said YouTube has become a platform that enables people to tell their stories.

“Indian creators are making videos inspired by local trends that go on to define global culture. YouTube is number one in reach and watch time in India. And we just passed a huge milestone. Shorts, which we first launched in India, now have trillions of views here,” he said.

YouTube is the most streamed service on Connected TVs (cTV) in India with viewership growing 4x in the last three years, he added.

“These creators and artists have business strategies, writers’ rooms, and production teams. They’re creating programs that people love to watch. And along the way, they’re redefining entertainment, news, and education. And they’re driving growth on YouTube. YouTube is the most watched streaming service on cTVs here,” Mohan further said.

YouTube unveiled a range of new ad formats for cTV and Shorts, in an effort to enhance engagement and augment results for brands.

It introduced interactive stickers and gestures, and animated image ads for YouTube shorts.

It also launched Pause Ads and Branded QR codes for cTV.

While Pause Ads enable non-intrusive viewer engagement during content pauses on the big screen, Branded QR codes extend reach beyond YouTube to premium broadcasters on OTTs via DV360, YouTube said.

“These new ad formats will enable brands to harness the influence, cultural impact and interactive potential of Shorts and Connected TV, while catering to the evolving needs of advertisers,” a company statement said.

“YouTube is where India comes to connect, be entertained, and be inspired, regardless of whether it’s a Connected TV screen or a mobile one. TV viewing in India has undergone a fundamental shift. We’re committed to leading this change by providing the best Connected TV experience and creating ad formats that seamlessly connect marketers with their audiences, on any screen and any format,” Shekar Khosla, Vice President, Marketing, Google India, said.
