Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo has introduced its V40-series smartphones in India, comprising the Vivo V40 and V40 Pro models. These smartphones feature camera systems developed in collaboration with the German optics brand Zeiss. Google has unveiled a new streaming device named the Google TV Streamer, set to replace the Chromecast line. Departing from the Chromecast’s compact dongle form factor, the Google TV Streamer adopts a conventional set-top-box design. According to Google, this new device delivers enhanced performance and supports 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Currently exclusive to the US market, the Google TV Streamer is available for pre-orders at $99.99.

The new version aims to facilitate multitasking more effectively than before. Previously, it functioned similarly to Apple Spotlight, opening a text entry box upon pressing the Option + Space command on the keyboard. The updated app now provides side-by-side access to the ChatGPT interface by opening a companion window. This window remains in front along with other open applications, ensuring easier access.

Apple has released iOS 18 public beta 3 to eligible iPhone users enrolled in its public beta testing programme. The public beta followed developer beta 5 release, and brought a similar set of enhancements in user interface and new set of features. Among the notable additions is a new “Distraction Control” feature in Safari browser that allows users to selectively hide unwanted content from webpages. Other changes include improvements to Photos app, app icon redesign, and more.

Samsung has enabled its Galaxy AI-powered “Live Translate” feature on select third-party messaging apps, including Meta’s instant messaging platform WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Telegram. In July, Samsung announced that the Live Translate feature will soon work with third-party apps for voice calls. The feature has been available on Samsung’s native calling app but is now getting support for other apps as well.

Google is bringing Gemini, its set of artificial intelligence language models, to its smart home platform – Google Home. Ahead of its hardware event next week on August 13, the US-based software giant has announced three new Gemini-powered experiences that it will be introducing to later this year. These encompass natural language input for Google Home routine creation, a new camera intelligence feature that produces captions and descriptions for video footage from Nest cameras, and an improved Google Assistant for Nest smart speakers and displays with new voices.

Garmin has revamped its Connect IQ store, enabling support for in-store payment with Garmin Pay and access to more third-party apps and watch faces. For context, Connect IQ is the app platform for Garmin smartwatches, bike computers, and outdoor handhelds. It has been available for some time, but criticised for lack of payment option for in-store purchases and limited pool of third-party apps and watch faces. A step in the right direction, the revamped store addresses one of the most criticised aspects, the lack of payment option, by integrating Garmin Pay into the store.

The Nothing Phone 2a Plus is now available for purchase in India. The mid-range smartphone from UK-based consumer technology brand is available on e-commerce platform Flipkart and select retail stores such as Croma and Vijay Sales. Based on the Nothing Phone 2a, which debuted earlier this year, the plus model brings performance improvement with the new MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro chip, new 50MP front facing camera sensor, and some changes in design.

Elon Musk-led electric car brand, Tesla, has recalled 1.68 million cars in China for a remote software upgrade. The announcement, made late on Tuesday, said that vehicles with faulty trunk latches will be repaired free of charge.

In its latest round of layoffs, US-based computer maker Dell has announced the termination of around 12,500 employees. Last year, Dell also eliminated 13,000 jobs in two rounds of cuts.

A version of Samsung Electronics’ fifth-generation high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, or HBM3E, has passed Nvidia’s tests for use in its artificial intelligence (AI) processors, three sources briefed on the results said.

Google unveils set-top-box like TV Streamer to replace Chromecast: Details

Google has launched a new streaming device, called the Google TV Streamer, which will be replacing the Chromecast line. Unlike the Chromecast’s small dongle form factor, the TV Streamer features a traditional set-top-box design. Google said that its latest streaming device offers more performance and supports 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Google TV Streamer is currently exclusive to the US market and is available in the region for pre-orders. Priced at $99.99, the device will be up for sale on September 24.

Google TV Streamer: Design

Google said that the TV Streamer is designed to sit in front of the TV, rather than being tucked behind. The Google TV Streamer is available in Porcelain and Hazel colours, and features a sleek low-profile form.

Google said it has also redesigned the voice remote. The company said that the new remote comes with improved ergonomics with new button layout optimised for hands of all sizes. The remote also features a customisable button for opening a preferred app.

Google TV Streamer: Details

Google said that the TV Streamer offers access to over 7,00,000 movies and shows through streaming apps such as YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV and more. This is in addition to live TV access for over 800 channels. The Google TV streamer utilises Google AI to curate content suggestions across app subscriptions based on users preferences. Tech layoffs continue: Dell to slash 12.5K jobs in restructuring for AI era

Tech layoffs continue: Dell to slash 12.5K jobs in restructuring for AI era

In its latest round of layoffs, US-based computer maker Dell has announced the termination of around 12,500 employees. Last year, Dell also eliminated 13,000 jobs in two rounds of cuts.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon, the company said it is cutting some sales jobs (while adding a few other positions) to “reorganise its business for the AI era, become leaner, and focus on growth”. The layoffs primarily impacted managers and senior managers, some with over two decades of experience at the company, according to media reports.

Dell executives communicated the layoffs through an internal memo on August 6. The memo, titled “Global Sales Modernisation Update”, was sent by senior executives Bill Scannell and John Byrne. It outlined the Texas-based company’s intentions to “streamline management layers and reprioritise investments”.

“Through a reorganisation of our go-to-market teams and an ongoing series of actions, we are becoming a leaner company. We are combining teams and prioritising where we invest across the company. We continually evolve our business, so we’re set up to deliver the best innovation, value, and service to our customers and partners,” it said.

Justifying its restructuring efforts, the company added, “The destination is going to be worth it — it’s about winning and winning big!”

As of February, Dell employed around 120,000 people globally. It is worth mentioning that Dell’s core PC business has faced challenges following a surge in demand during the pandemic. However, despite these challenges, the company is hopeful that AI-powered devices will drive new growth.

Tech layoffs touching new high

Intel also recently announced its plan to cut 15,000 jobs this year, continuing a pattern of significant job reductions that began last year. Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger attributed these cuts to “disappointing revenue growth” and difficulties in effectively leveraging AI trends.

Similarly, Microsoft reduced its workforce by around 1,000 employees in the mixed reality and Azure ‘moonshots’ divisions. Additionally, UKG, a software firm headquartered in Massachusetts, announced significant job cuts this month, reducing its workforce by 14 per cent, which equates to about 2,200 employees.

Other companies, including Intuit, Dyson, and Kaspersky, have also announced layoffs. Indian companies are following the global trend, with Unacademy, WayCool, and PocketFM announcing job cuts this year.

Google Home set to get these Gemini intelligence-powered smart experiences

Google Home set to get these Gemini intelligence-powered smart experiences

Google is bringing Gemini, its set of artificial intelligence language models, to its smart home platform – Google Home. Ahead of its hardware event next week on August 13, the US-based software giant has announced three new Gemini-powered experiences that it will be introducing to later this year. These encompass natural language input for Google Home routine creation, a new camera intelligence feature that produces captions and descriptions for video footage from Nest cameras, and an improved Google Assistant for Nest smart speakers and displays with new voices. Here are all the details:

Security camera alerts

Nest cameras will get Gemini intelligence to improve understanding, while gathering all information about what is visible and audible and then prioritise according to importance. Google Home will offer a description of what was seen in camera, rather than just alerting about it. The Gemini intelligence will train on user’s data in the cloud. Users can also type text to search through the footage in the activity tab of Google Home.

This means that your camera can understand that it isn’t just an “animal detected” in the video, but it will understand that “the dog is digging in the garden,” said Google in its blog.

Home automation

Google Home will get “Help me create” with which users can give instructions about what to do such as “lock the doors and turn off the lights at bedtime”. Users can give instructions via text or verbally in the Home app on the phone. Users can also create a routine and Google Home will automatically follow the instructions.

Google Assistant

Google is making improvements to Google Assistant on Nest speakers and displays. Google Assistant will feature new voices with different styles, tones and accents. Google Assistant will also receive the capability of having more natural conversations.

Most of these new features will be behind paywall and will require Google’s Nest Aware subscription, which is a video recording subscriptions for Nest cameras. The Gemini-powered features will launch initially in Google’s public preview beta program to select Nest aware subscribers and are expected to roll out widely later.

Samsung expands Galaxy AI 'Live Translate' to WhatsApp, Telegram, and Meet

Samsung expands Galaxy AI 'Live Translate' to WhatsApp, Telegram, and Meet

Samsung’s Live Translate on WhatsApp, Telegram and Google Meet

Samsung has enabled its Galaxy AI-powered “Live Translate” feature on select third-party messaging apps, including Meta’s instant messaging platform WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Telegram. In July, Samsung announced that the Live Translate feature will soon work with third-party apps for voice calls. The feature has been available on Samsung’s native calling app but is now getting support for other apps as well.

Samsung’s Live Translate offers translations between languages for messages and calls in real time. The feature works through on-device processing and Samsung has said that user data is stored locally on the device and not sent through the server. At the time of announcement, Samsung confirmed that the entire processing of real-time call translation for third-party apps will also take place on-device for user’s privacy.

“Since this feature has been integrated into our on-device AI language translation model, users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about privacy issues like personal data being shared outside their phone when using Live Translate,” said Samsung’s EVP and head of Mobile research and development, Won-Joon Choi in his editorial note published on Samsung newsroom.

Samsung’s Live Translate support

While Samsung has not officially revealed the list of apps that support the Live Translate, the feature is available for WhatsApp, Telegram and Google Meet. The AI-powered live translation feature currently does not support Cisco’s Webex and Zoom, however, it could expand to more third-party applications in the future.

It should also be noted that third-party apps are getting the support for Live Translate only on select Samsung devices that support Galaxy AI. These devices include the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 Series, Z Fold 5, Z Fold 6, Z Flip 5, Z Flip 6, Galaxy Tab S9 series, and more.

How to enable Live Translate for third-party apps

  • Go to Settings on an eligible Samsung device

  • Tap on “Galaxy AI” and select the “Call Assist” option

  • Scroll down to the “Live Translate in other apps” option

  • You will see a list of available apps that support the Live Translate feature

  • Enable the preferred apps

While on a call through the app, tap on the “Live Translate” option in the quick panel to kick off the feature.
