John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, announced his exit from the company on Tuesday (August 6). He is set to join OpenAI’s rival Anthropic.

In a post on social media platform X, Schulman said that he is making this move “to deepen his focus on AI alignment and return to hands-on technical work in a new chapter of his career”.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also commented on the post, showing his gratitude. He said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for OpenAI!”

Additionally, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, Greg Brockman, shared in a post on X that he will be taking a sabbatical until the end of the year. “I’m taking a sabbatical through the end of the year. First time to relax since co-founding OpenAI nine years ago. The mission is far from complete; we still have a safe AGI to build,” he said in a post.

Who is John Schulman?

Schulman joined OpenAI in December 2015, just before completing his PhD in electrical engineering and computer sciences at UC Berkeley. During his stint at OpenAI, Schulman led the reinforcement learning team that developed ChatGPT, a chatbot based on the company’s generative pre-trained (GPT) language models.

With Schulman’s departure, only three of OpenAI’s 11 original founders remain — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Brockman, and Wojciech Zaremba, lead of language and code generation.

OpenAI: High attrition rate

Another co-founder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, left the company in May. Additionally, Andrej Karpathy, also a founding member, departed in February to start an AI-integrated education platform in July.

Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year after leading products at Meta, Uber, and Airtable, also exited some time ago. The most talked-about exit was of Elon Musk, also a co-founder of OpenAI, who has filed a lawsuit against the company and CEO Sam Altman. Musk has alleged that the firm prioritises profits and commercial interests over the public good.

Apple may use plastic body, instead of aluminium, in Watch SE 2024: Report

Apple may use plastic body, instead of aluminium, in Watch SE 2024: Report

Representative Image: Apple Watch SE (2022)

Apple is reportedly working on a “rigid plastic” body for the next-generation Apple Watch SE model. According to a report by 9To5Mac, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it is “increasingly likely” that Apple would shift to a rigid plastic body for the next Apple Watch SE model “for a better array of colours.”

According to the report, Apple could launch the next-generation Apple Watch SE this year, alongside the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10. Apart from the all-plastic body, the third-generation Apple Watch SE could feature a new processor. As per the report, this affordable Apple Watch model could be powered by the S9 chip that debuted last year with the Apple Watch Series 9. However, Apple could surprise by powering the Watch SE 2024 with S10 chip, which would make its debut on the next-generation Apple Watch Series 10. This could be possible as a shift from an aluminium casing to plastic will significantly reduce the manufacturing cost.

The report stated that a reduced manufacturing cost could also allow Apple to pack more functionality and features into the next generation Apple Watch SE such as always-on display and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Both of these features are not available on the current generation Apple Watch SE.

Alternatively, Apple could reduce the price of the Apple Watch SE and keep the set of features on the device relatively similar to that of the predecessor. This would make the Apple Watch accessible to more customers.

Made by Google event on August 13: What to expect besides Pixel 9 series

Made by Google event on August 13: What to expect besides Pixel 9 series

Google is hosting an event on August 13 where it will unveil smartphones in the Pixel 9 series. However, there is more in the pipeline besides smartphones. The US-based technology giant is anticipated to introduce new ecosystem devices such as next-generation Pixel Buds, Pixel Watch, and Chromecast streaming device. Moreover, Google is likely to debut the Android 15 operating system, which has been available in beta for some time now. That said, here is everything expected to launch alongside the Pixel 9 series at the Made by Google event on August 13:

Google Pixel Watch 3 series

Last year, Google introduced the Pixel Watch 2 together with Pixel 8 series. Google is likely to continue this tradition by launching a smartwatch with the Pixel 9 series. According to a report by Android Authority, the Pixel Watch 3 will be accompanied by a larger model, likely to be named the Pixel Watch 3 XL. Similar to the anticipated Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphone, the Pixel Watch 3 XL will be based on the standard model but with a larger display. The XL model is expected to measure 45mm compared to 41mm on the standard Watch 3.

While both the Pixel 3 series watches are not expected to bring major changes in terms of design, they are anticipated to feature brighter displays with higher resolution than the Pixel Watch 2. The Pixel Watch 3 series devices are also anticipated to feature ultra-wideband (UWB) chips for short-range communication and location tracking.

Google Pixel Buds Pro 2

Google is also expected to launch the second-generation Pixel Buds Pro wireless earphones at the Made by Google event. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are anticipated to carry the same design as its predecessor with improvements in audio quality. The earbuds are expected to be available in a wide range of colourways, including shades of black, grey, pink, and green.

Google TV Streamer

Google is expected to completely overhaul the Chromecast with Google TV with the next-generation device. According to reports, the next generation TV streaming device from Google would likely take a set-top box like design, which will be completely different from the dongle design of the current generation model. Google is also expected to rebrand the product to “Google TV Streamer”.

The included remote is also expected to get a new design with the volume buttons at the front and Google Assistant button being replaced with a microphone button. The remote could also get more than one customisable button for quick actions.

Android 15

Google recently released the last scheduled update in the Android 15 beta program, suggesting that Google’s new operating system is ready to roll-out to general users. Android 15 would likely be released first on the Google Pixel 9 series smartphones that are set to make their debut at the Made by Google event.

Android 15 brings a set of new features that includes satellite connectivity, improved near field communication (nfc), private space for hiding sensitive information, theft protection, improved cover screen support for flip-style foldable smartphones, redesigned user interface and more.

After phones, Google to enable Gemini assistant on wireless earbuds: Report

After phones, Google to enable Gemini assistant on wireless earbuds: Report

Google could bring its artificial intelligence-powered Gemini assistant to wireless earbuds as it continues to work towards expansion of Gemini. Launched on smartphones in February with a dedicated app, Gemini has been speculated to make way to headphones and earphones, too. Now, 9to5Google has spotted Gemini on earbuds branding in the latest version of Google app.

Google app’s code reportedly contains strings, which reads “Gemini in earbuds.” According to 9to5Google, Google app 15.31 details how users can “Talk to Gemini on earbuds”.  The latest beta update also has a string, “Gemini is a new AI assistant on your tablet. Get help learning in new ways, planning events, writing thank you notes, and more.” Previously, there were reports stating that users will be able to interact with Gemini on earbuds/headphones using voice commands and now it looks like it could soon become a reality. If so, Gemini would be able to answer questions verbally when asked a question by users via earbuds.

Gemini for earbuds might be officially announced along with Pixel Buds Pro 2 at the Made by Google event on August 13. It is not certain if the existing assistant headphones will receive Gemini. Google had earlier confirmed that the Pixel Tablet will receive Gemini.

Google has reportedly started rolling out a new voice in limited capacity. According to reports, the new voice is only spotted in Gemini for Android and there is no change for iOS app and web client. The new voice currently does not offer the option to change the voice back in settings and that feature could be in development. Since the launch of Google’s AI chatbot, a male voice has read responses and, reportedly, activating Gemini on Android now reveals a female voice. Google is testing many voices for Gemini and the new voice could be one of them.
