TikTok collected data on issues like abortion, gun control: US Justice Dept

In a fresh broadside against one of the world’s most popular technology companies, the Justice Department late Friday accused TikTok of harnessing the capability to gather bulk information on users based on views on divisive social issues like gun control, abortion and religion.

Government lawyers wrote in a brief filed to the federal appeals court in Washington that TikTok and its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance used an internal web-suite system called Lark to enable TikTok employees to speak directly with ByteDance engineers in China.

TikTok employees used Lark to send sensitive data about US users, information that has wound up being stored on Chinese servers and accessible to ByteDance employees in China, federal officials said.

One of Lark’s internal search tools, the filing states, permits ByteDance and TikTok employees in the US and China to gather information on users’ content or expressions, including views on sensitive topics, such as abortion or religion. Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported TikTok had tracked users who watched LGBTQ content through a dashboard the company said it had since deleted.

The new court documents represent the government’s first major defense in a consequential legal battle over the future of the popular social media platform, which is used by more than 170 million Americans. Under a law signed by President Joe Biden in April, the company could face a ban in a few months if it doesn’t break ties with ByteDance.

The measure was passed with bipartisan support after lawmakers and administration officials expressed concerns that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over US user data or sway public opinion towards Beijing’s interests by manipulating the algorithm that populates users’ feeds.

The Justice Department warned, in stark terms, of the potential for what it called covert content manipulation by the Chinese government, saying the algorithm could be designed to shape content that users receive.

By directing ByteDance or TikTok to covertly manipulate that algorithm; China could for example further its existing malign influence operations and amplify its efforts to undermine trust in our democracy and exacerbate social divisions, the brief states.

The concern, they said, is more than theoretical, alleging that TikTok and ByteDance employees are known to engage in a practice called heating in which certain videos are promoted in order to receive a certain number of views. While this capability enables TikTok to curate popular content and disseminate it more widely, US officials posit it can also be used for nefarious purposes.

TikTok did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Justice Department officials are asking the court to allow a classified version of its legal brief, which won’t be accessible to the two companies.

In the redacted version of the court documents, the Justice Department said another tool triggered the suppression of content based on the use of certain words. Certain policies of the tool applied to ByteDance users in China, where the company operates a similar app called Douyin that follows Beijing’s strict censorship rules.

But Justice Department officials said other policies may have been applied to TikTok users outside of China. TikTok was investigating the existence of these policies and whether they had ever been used in the US in, or around, 2022, officials said.

The government points to the Lark data transfers to explain why federal officials do not believe that Project Texas, TikTok’s USD 1.5 billion mitigation plan to store US user data on servers owned and maintained by the tech giant Oracle, is sufficient to guard against national security concerns.

In its legal challenge against the law, TikTok has heavily leaned on arguments that the potential ban violates the First Amendment because it bars the app from continued speech unless it attracts a new owner through a complex divestment process. It has also argued divestment would change the speech on the platform because a new social platform would lack the algorithm that has driven its success.

In its response, the Justice Department argued TikTok has not raised any valid free speech claims, saying the law addresses national security concerns without targeting protected speech, and argues that China and ByteDance, as foreign entities, aren’t shielded by the First Amendment.

TikTok has also argued the US law discriminates on viewpoints, citing statements from some lawmakers critical of what they viewed as an anti-Israel tilt on the platform during its war in Gaza.

Justice Department officials disputes that argument, saying the law at issue reflects their ongoing concern that China could weaponise technology against US national security, a fear they say is made worse by demands that companies under Beijing’s control turn over sensitive data to the government. They say TikTok, under its current operating structure, is required to be responsive to those demands.

Oral arguments in the case is scheduled for September.

WhatsApp not planning to shut services in India: I&B Minister Vaishnaw

WhatsApp not planning to shut services in India: I&B Minister Vaishnaw

Earlier this year, WhatsApp had told the Delhi High Court that it will stop functioning in India if it was compelled by the government to break encryption of messages | Representative Image

WhatsApp and its parent company Meta has not informed the government of any plans to shut down its services in India, I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

“Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has shared that WhatsApp or Meta has not informed the government about any such plans,” Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

Congress member Vivek Tankha had asked whether WhatsApp was planning to shut its services in India due to the government’s directives to share user details.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp had told the Delhi High Court that it will stop functioning in India if it was compelled by the government to break encryption of messages.

WhatsApp and its parent company Meta had challenged the newly amended IT Rules contending that they violate the right to privacy and were unconstitutional.

Responding to Tankha’s question on curbs on social media platforms, Vaishnaw said the central government issues directions under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 in the interest of the sovereignty or integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence relating to above in respect of the information on a computer resource.

CERT-In in talks with Apple over 'state-sponsored' spyware attack: Govt

CERT-In in talks with Apple over 'state-sponsored' spyware attack: Govt

There is no such thing as state-sponsored hacking or tracking: Jitin Prasada | (Photo: PTI)

The Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, informed the Rajya Sabha that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) is in communication with Apple regarding the issue of alleged state-sponsored spyware attacks.

“There is no such thing as state-sponsored hacking or tracking,” he said.

Prasad was responding to a question from Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Raghav Chaddha over alleged state-sponsored hacking in the Rajya Sabha today.

He said, “CERT is in touch with Apple and is in the process of getting information from the company about the alerts. Our agencies will act on the information provided”.

Raising the issue in the Upper House on Friday, Raghav Chadha said, “I along with several members of this House, particularly who sit in the opposition benches, are victims of something called state-sponsored spyware attack. Whereby our mobile phones notified us that a state-sponsored cyber attack took place which was attempting to infiltrate our mobile phone devices”.

“Now members of just not this House including several journalists and eminent people in public life are also victims. Therefore, I ask whether the government has taken cognizance of such attacks. Is there a list of the people who were attacked by such spyware attacks? And thirdly, what action has been taken?” he questioned.

Tech wrap Jul 26: OpenAI SearchGPT, Microsoft Bing, Gemini 1.5 Flash, more

OpenAI has announced that it is testing a prototype version of a new artificial intelligence-powered web search feature called SearchGPT, which it plans to integrate into its AI chatbot ChatGPT. The Microsoft-backed AI company said that SearchGPT utilises the company’s AI models to fetch results and answers with relevant sources from the web. The feature is tested with select users and publishers to draw feedback.

Microsoft is set to revamp the Bing Search experience by leveraging artificial intelligence to generate an overview of search results. The US-based software giant said it is combining the power of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) with the search results page to create a “bespoke and dynamic response” to a user’s query.

Google has announced that it is updating the free-tier of its Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot with the new Gemini 1.5 Flash model. Google in a blog post stated that users can now experience  1.5 Flash in the unpaid version of Gemini for faster and more helpful responses. The company said that the new model integration will offer improvements across-the-board and will lower the response latency.

Reddit’s recent actions in restricting access to its data for search engines other than Google have stirred significant attention and debate within the tech community. Initially, Reddit forged a prominent partnership with Google earlier this year, aimed at integrating Reddit’s vast dataset into Google’s AI models. This collaboration resulted in Reddit’s content gaining heightened visibility in Google Search results, surpassing even the original websites linked within Reddit posts.

Finnish mobile phone brand HMD (Human Mobile Devices) debuted Qi2 wireless charging in Android smartphone space with the launch of Skyline. This is an important development because the second-generation wireless charging standard by Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) was introduced in early 2023, but has been skipped by the big technology players, such as Google and Samsung, to date despite growing adoption of wireless charging features in smartphones. Nevertheless, more brands are expected to follow the suit since there now is a smartphone with support for Qi2 wireless charging support.

OnePlus Nord 4 is presented by the company as its first smartphone in the 5G era to feature an all-metal unibody design. This is assumed significant because a full metal body generally presents challenges such as network reception issues, heating problems, and performance drops due to thermal throttling.

OpenAI is venturing into a territory long dominated by Google with the selective launch of SearchGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered search engine with real-time access to information from the internet.

Last month, websites for a French film festival and the Grand Palais, a historic exhibition and museum complex in Paris, shut down after a cyberattack. Apple announces cuts in iPhone prices after Budget move on customs duty

Apple announces cuts in iPhone prices after Budget move on customs duty

Apple Inc on Friday cut prices of the iPhone by up to Rs 5,900 across the board, passing on the benefit of announcements in India’s annual Budget which included a 5 per cent reduction in the basic customs duty (BCD) on imported mobile phones. The duty was earlier pegged at 22 per cent.

That apart the Budget reduced BCD on chargers and PCBAs, a key element in assembling smartphones in India, to 15 per cent from 20 per cent.

The company’s sharpest price cut was in the entry-level iPhone SE, which is assembled in the country. The price was reduced from Rs 49,900 to Rs 47,600, a 4.6 per cent cut that would help Apple expand its presence in the domestic market.

Apple also announced price cuts for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which are imported to India. While iPhone 15 Pro would be cheaper by Rs 5,100, iPhone 15 Pro Max is down by Rs 5,900. iPhone Pro is now pegged at Rs 129,800 – a price reduction of 3.7 per cent and iPhone Pro Max at Rs 154,000, a drop of 3.7 per cent.

Price cuts for other iPhone models assembled in the country are marginal. The reduction is Rs 300 for the latest iPhone 15 as well as the iPhone Plus and that of the previous generation of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. These models are assembled in the country and do not benefit from the reduction of BCD.

The reduction in BCD on mobile phones does not benefit Samsung, another key player in the Rs 45,000 plus ultra-premium market. That is because it assembles all its phones which include the flip, foldable and the Ultra in the country.

Apple Inc has seen a dramatic growth in its revenues in the domestic market which have gone up seven fold from Rs 11,000 crore in FY19 to an expected Rs 67,000 crore in FY24. In FY 24 it catapulted into the top spot in terms of revenue share at 23 per cent, pulling down Samsung by one percentage point from that spot to number two.

OnePlus Nord 4 review: An all-round phone with focus on design, performance

OnePlus Nord 4 review: An all-round phone with focus on design, performance

OnePlus Nord 4 is presented by the company as its first smartphone in the 5G era to feature an all-metal unibody design. This is assumed significant because a full metal body generally presents challenges such as network reception issues, heating problems, and performance drops due to thermal throttling. So, do these problems persist with the Nord 4 when used as a daily driver? Let us find out:

Design

The OnePlus Nord 4 in its Oasis Green colour looks premium with a dual-tone finish on the rear side. The smartphone resembles a slab of aluminium with a soft metallic brushed finish, while OnePlus has incorporated a glossy, glass-like top section that houses both the rear cameras and a dual-flash setup. The cameras are uniquely placed, with individual bumps for each sensor positioned next to each other horizontally and aligned to the left. Generally, smartphones with a horizontal layout opt for a centrally aligned setup, but this placement adds a unique touch. On the front, the smartphone features a completely flat display with very thin bezels on all sides, fitting neatly within the aluminium chassis.

The metal unibody design with smooth curved edges on the back enhances ergonomics. The Nord 4 feels premium to hold and touch, and the all-metal body gives you the confidence to go case-less. Although it is neither the lightest nor the slimmest smartphone, it feels well-balanced and sleek.

An all-metal design is a key feature of the Nord 4, leading OnePlus to opt for a different antenna setup. While the antenna strips on the frame do not detract much from the aesthetics, the one running along the entire bottom edge does feel odd. However, it is not immediately noticeable as the colour and finish of the chassis do a good job of hiding the antenna.

The aluminium chassis with a brushed finish adds grip and resists fingerprints and dirt marks but can feel slippery when used with wet hands. Conversely, the glossy upper section of the smartphone can attract smudges.

OnePlus Nord 4: All-metal unibody design

Display

While the company has focused on marketing the Nord 4 for its design and build, the display stands out as one of the smartphone’s most impressive features. The 6.74-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel ranks among the best flat screens available. With thin bezels, the display feels almost edge-to-edge, adding a premium look to the device. The screen shows vibrant colours and sharp, detailed visuals. It is also bright, offering optimum visibility outdoors at all viewing angles.

The 120Hz refresh rate, coupled with smooth animations, makes scrolling a breeze. Additionally, the settings menu allows you to set app-specific refresh rates. You can even force some apps to run at 120Hz, although the default is 60Hz.

The OnePlus Nord 4 comes with a default screen resolution of 2414 x 1080, which you can manually change to 2772 x 1240 in the display settings. The “Adaptive Details Enhancement” feature, which is auto-enabled, intelligently recognises what’s on the screen and enhances details for videos and select apps. However, with the highest display resolution, I barely noticed any significant difference while watching YouTube videos. For content consumption, the display supports HDR10+, offering HDR viewing on YouTube videos but not for Netflix, which is a bit disappointing. Nonetheless, UltraHDR support is available for viewing HDR images in the gallery.

Camera

The OnePlus Nord 4 sports a 50-megapixel camera sensor (Sony LYTIA) with optical image stabilisation. Images from the primary camera come out clear in both natural and artificial lighting conditions. Even under low light, the camera captures adequate details. The only downside is that colours do not appear punchy under artificial lighting, although the sensor maintains its accuracy. On the shots taken through the 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, colours appear more lifelike, but it softens the details to produce the best pictures possible. This changes under low light, as the sensor produces low-contrast and hazy images in such conditions.

Under natural lighting, the Nord 4 excels in capturing decent portrait shots. However, under artificial lighting, edge detection falls short, especially with a busy background. The 16MP front-facing camera takes decent selfies in well-lit environments with adequate detail, but with low colour saturation.

For videography, the Nord 4 offers recording options in 4K, 1080p, and 720p resolutions, all at 30 and 60 frames per second. It should be noted that EIS and OIS functionality is limited to 1080p recording at 60 fps. Surprisingly, the wide-angle lens is only available when recording 720p video at 30fps, making it practically useless for videography. As for video quality, the recording is clear and crisp, similar to the sensor’s performance for imaging. Additionally, with Ultra-steady mode enabled, the recording felt jitter-free while in motion.

Performance

The OnePlus Nord 4 is powered by the Qualcomm 7 Plus Gen 3 chipset and offers ample performance for daily use. Tasks such as web browsing, social media scrolling, and watching high-resolution videos are handled effortlessly by the smartphone. Even when multitasking or running heavy apps in the background, the device remains smooth and responsive.

The Nord 4 also performs well for gaming. While playing demanding games like Real Racing 3, FC Mobile, or Genshin Impact, there was no noticeable lag on medium to high settings. However, the lower side frame section did get slightly warm, and occasional frame rate drops were observed. Although it never became too hot to touch, the minor stutter in gameplay persisted for a while.

Software and AI features

The OnePlus Nord 4 boots OxygenOS 14.1, and it’s the “.1” update that brings new AI features similar to OPPO’s ColorOS 14.1 on its Reno 12 series. While some names have changed, the features and functionality remain the same.

The Nord 4 features the same Smart Sidebar as the Reno 12 Pro, offering a variety of functionalities. When you open an article on the web, you can slide open the sidebar to see two new options: “AI Speak” and “AI Summary” under the “Reading Assistant” section. “AI Speak” reads the text from the webpage aloud, while “AI Summary” generates a bullet-point summary highlighting important information. This worked with all the web browsers I tested, including the privacy-centric Brave.

You also get the AI Writer feature for writing assistance, which appears on the sidebar when you open a text field, such as an email composition page. By tapping on the feature, it scans the screen and opens a floating window where you can input pointers, keywords, or phrases to generate text. You can also choose between tones for the generated content, such as “concise,” “detailed,” and “polite.” While this feature was available on Instagram for writing captions, it did not appear for typing messages, neither on the native message app nor on third-party apps like WhatsApp.

The native voice features also receive AI treatment with functionalities like audio transcription and text summarization of voice recordings. The text summarization feature works well, providing an overview of a voice recording with key information in bullet points. However, the text transcription is not real-time and is only available once the recording is completed and saved.

Interestingly, OnePlus has not incorporated the new AI-powered image editing tools found on the Reno 12. However, the handy AI eraser is still available.

Battery

The battery is a standout feature for the OnePlus Nord 4. With a 5500mAh capacity, the smartphone can last up to two days for conservative users. Even with more frequent use, it easily lasts a full day with some charge left. The impressive battery capacity is further enhanced by 100W fast wired charging support, which takes you from 6 per cent to 55 per cent in just 14 minutes. A full charge from 4 per cent took less than half an hour.

Verdict

The OnePlus Nord 4 offers a unique design reminiscent of mid-2010s smartphones with its all-metal chassis. Additionally, the smartphone offers a dazzling flat display, ample performance, solid battery life, and a few handy AI tools.

Priced from Rs 29,999 onwards, the OnePlus Nord 4 presents itself as a compelling option for those seeking a flagship-grade experience in mid-range segment, even if it means compromising on a few features such as top-notch camera performance and Dolby Vision HDR support.
