Apple Maps available on web with limited features as part of public beta

Apple has announced the launch of its Maps service on the web for the first time as part of the public beta. Users can access Apple Maps on the web using Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad and Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. This is assumed significant because for a long time Apple Maps services have been exclusively available on Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches. This has allowed Google Maps to remain the leading navigation option for users.

Apple has announced, “Now, users can get driving and walking directions; find great places and useful information including photos, hours, ratings, and reviews; take actions like ordering food directly from the Maps place card; and browse curated Guides to discover places to eat, shop, and explore in cities around the world. Additional features, including Look Around, will be available in the coming months.”

Directions, Businesses, Points of interest, Guides and more are included in the web interface. Features like Look Around are expected to arrive soon. Users cannot log in to their Apple ID on the web to access saved places and custom Guides. Apple has said that the developers using Market JS can link out to Apple Maps on the web which will result in making it easier to get directions and see information about places in detail.

Users can try Apple Maps on the web in English by visiting beta.maps.apple.com. Apple has said that the support for additional languages, browsers and platforms will be added over time

Apple Maps was launched in 2012. Google Maps made its debut on desktop in 2005.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Wednesday announced a new UK-India Technology Security Initiative during his first visit to India, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders in New Delhi.

According to the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the security initiative has been agreed by the National Security Advisors (NSAs) following negotiations between both countries to expand collaboration in critical and emerging technologies across priority sectors. It will set out a bold new approach for how the UK and India work together on defining technologies across telecoms, critical minerals, AI, quantum, health/biotech, advanced materials and semiconductors.

The FCDO said the tech initiative is part of a wider package of announcements the UK Foreign Secretary agreed following bilateral meetings in New Delhi, including with his counterpart External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, to “refresh the UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This government will put growth at the heart of our foreign policy. That’s why three weeks into the job, I am in Delhi announcing a new Technology Security Initiative to deliver on the promise of the UK-India relationship, said Lammy.

This will mean real action together on the challenges of the future from AI to critical minerals. Together we can unlock mutual growth, boost innovation, jobs and investment. We are also accelerating our joint work on the climate crisis ensuring brighter, safer futures for Brits and Indians. This government is reconnecting Britain for our security and prosperity at home, he said.

A new GBP 7-million funding call for Future Telecoms research was also announced by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and India’s Department of Science and Technology, under the India-UK science, technology, and innovation partnership.

Secretary of State for Science, Peter Kyle, said: “The UK and India are recognised the world over as powerhouses for science, innovation and technology – and this new agreement will deliver growth and untold benefits for citizens across both nations.

From telecoms and semiconductors to biotechnology and AI, these generation-defining technologies will unlock countless new opportunities and innovations, so we can deliver for working people here and in India as we deepen our long-standing partnership.

Lammy and Jaishankar are said to have agreed to deepen partnership on climate, including to mobilise finance and unlock new clean growth opportunities. This includes strengthening the bilateral investment partnership, to unlock the potential of pioneering Indian enterprises working on climate and technology. These initiatives are specifically focussed on delivering green development while empowering women, the FCDO said.

As well as work on off-shore wind and green hydrogen, the UK and India have agreed to “deepen” partnership on forests and on building resilient cities of the future.

How basic customs duty cut on mobile phones will affect cost benefits

How basic customs duty cut on mobile phones will affect cost benefits

Basic customs duty cuts on mobile phones, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and chargers, announced in Union Budget 2024, will not move the needle much in terms of cost benefits to end users, said analysts.

Experts argued that since more than 95 per cent of smartphones and a large chunk of chargers are already being assembled or manufactured locally, the customs cut announced in Budget 24-25 might not make any significant change in terms of price benefit, barring some brands which import phones as completely built-up units (CBU) in India.

Smartphones like Google Pixel and some iPhone Pro models are likely to get some benefit out of the rationalisation.

Experts, however, argue that although Apple looks like the major beneficiary of the duty cut, the impact for the technology giant might not be significant enough to cut prices.

“I think Apple is a major beneficiary here, but it’s not so huge that you would expect Apple to cut prices. There might be some impact in the sense that the price arbitrage happening from Thailand and Dubai and other places might stop,” said Navkender Singh, associate vice president, International Data Corporation.

The Union Finance Minister on Wednesday announced a reduction in basic customs duty (BCD) on mobile phones, their printed circuit board (PCB) assembly, and chargers to 15 per cent from the previous rate of 20 per cent.

Analysts see a limited impact from the cut and ask for further rationalisation in duties on components where India is still dependent on imports, including battery cells and display module panels.

“Already 99 per cent of smartphones were being assembled in India. Just some smartphones like Google Pixel, Honor and iPhone Pro models are still coming as CBUs, which will see some impact. But largely, if you look at PCB assembly, we already had the Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) manufacturing happening in India, and chargers are completely localised in India,” said Tarun Pathak, analyst, Counterpoint.

Pathak further said that from the duty perspective, there could be just a one to two per cent impact on the end consumer.

Reducing the BCD on mobile phones, their PCBA and chargers was one of the major demands from the electronics manufacturing bodies, including the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA).

Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman, ICEA, shared his views on the BCD cut in the Budget, where he said that the recent reduction in basic customs duty was designed to enhance the competitiveness of the Indian electronics manufacturing sector and ultimately benefit consumers.

“In reality, duties are paid by customers as a pass-through cost, so reductions are always passed on directly to them, making mobile phones and accessories more affordable and accessible. Additionally, lower production costs can increase India’s competitiveness vis-a-vis destinations such as Vietnam and China, where effective tariffs are near zero compared to 6-8 per cent in India,” he added.

On the mobile PCBA, the reduction could provide short-term relief for manufacturers to get supplies from other regions until domestic supplies are able to meet demand.

“The industry kept saying that they didn’t have enough capacity to expand. They questioned how they could manufacture for the country and export from here without sufficient capacity. In response, the government decided to reduce the pricing of imports from China and other places until the industry’s capacity could increase. This should be understood as a move to ensure that the momentum towards making India a manufacturing hub does not stop,” Singh added.

Spotify could finally offer hi-res lossless audio with a new deluxe plan

Spotify could finally offer hi-res lossless audio with a new deluxe plan

The Swedish audio streaming platform Spotify is developing a “much better version” of its service. According to The Verge, Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, announced during the quarterly earnings call on July 23 that the company is working on a new subscription tier offering superior benefits to the existing premium plan.

Ek stated, “The plan here is to offer a much better version of Spotify.” While the CEO refrained from specifying the new Spotify subscription’s features, he did reveal that the upcoming paid tier would be “sort of a deluxe version of Spotify that has all of the benefits that the normal Spotify version has, but a lot more control, a lot higher quality across the board, and some other things that I’m not ready to talk about just yet.”

Regarding pricing, Ek suggested the “deluxe version” would cost around $5 more than the current premium tier, placing it at approximately a $17-18 price point. He did not provide a specific launch date for the new subscription tier, mentioning it is still in its early development stages.

In 2021, Spotify unveiled “HiFi” as its lossless streaming tier. However, the company has yet to launch the service after more than three years since the initial announcement. It is plausible that the forthcoming Spotify “deluxe version” is the Spotify HiFi.

At the time of the HiFi announcement, Spotify stated that the new tier “would deliver music in CD-quality, lossless audio format to your device and Spotify Connect-enabled speakers”.
