Crowdstrike blames defect in content update for massive global IT crash

Crowdstrike blames defect in content update for massive global IT crash

Finally, the company said it would allow customers greater control over the delivery of such content, so they can select when and where updates are deployed. | Photo: Shutterstock

CrowdStrike Holdings Inc., the cybersecurity company at the center of massive global IT outages, said that a bug in a safety mechanism allowed flawed data to go out to customers in a botched update, causing last week’s meltdown.

The US company is trying to piece together the series of events that led to one of the most spectacular rolling IT failures the world has ever seen. The incident crashed Microsoft Windows computer systems around the world on Friday, taking down airline, banking and stock exchange operations from Australia and Japan to the UK.

Microsoft and CrowdStrike rolled out fixes last week, and many systems have been restored. But for several hours, bankers in Hong Kong, doctors in the UK and emergency responders in New Hampshire found themselves locked out of programs critical to keeping their operations afloat. More than 8.5 million Windows users were affected, according to Microsoft.

In the report, the company said it regularly makes what are known as security content configuration updates, intended to help the company observe, detect or prevent malicious activity, depending on the customer’s policy configuration. A “problematic Rapid Response Content configuration update” carried an undetected error and crashed Windows systems, the company said in a preliminary post-incident review, published about five days after the incident.

CrowdStrike said it would improve testing of Rapid Response Content in future, in a variety of ways. It said a new check “is in process” in order to fix the faulty Content Validator that failed to vet the problematic content. CrowdStrike also plans to stagger future deployments of updates so they are tested piecemeal – known as a canary deployment – before rolling it out at large.

Finally, the company said it would allow customers greater control over the delivery of such content, so they can select when and where updates are deployed.

CrowdStrike’s shares dropped nearly 30 per cent in the aftermath of the outage, slashing billions of dollars from its market value. The US House Committee on Homeland Security requested Chief Executive Officer George Kurtz’s appearance and lawmakers called on him to explain how the company will mitigate risks of a similar incident in the future.

Shawn Henry, CrowdStrike’s chief security officer, apologized in a post on LinkedIn on Monday, saying that the company had “failed” its customers.

“The confidence we built in drips over the years was lost in buckets within hours, and it was a gut punch,” he said.

It allows users to set it up with cellular connectivity for their kids, even if they do not have their own iPhone. The feature will allow kids to text, make a call while parents can keep a track of where they are.

Apple Watch For Your Kids feature: Eligibility and set-up

The Apple Watch For Your Kids feature is now available in India on cellular models of Apple Watch Series 4 or later or Apple Watch SE, paired with iPhone 8 or later.

The preferred Apple Watch can be set up for kids through their parents’ iPhones. Kids using Apple Watch For Your Kids will have their own phone number through a separate cellular plan, and can have their own Apple ID. Apple said that wireless cellular service is currently available through Reliance Jio in India.

Apple Watch For Your Kids feature: Details

As the Apple Watch has been set up using parent’s iPhone, the parent will get the ability to approve all contacts, so kids can safely use the communication features of Apple Watch such as messaging and phone calls. Apple Watch For Your Kids feature also offers Emergency SOS for accessing emergency services using the side button. Guardians are automatically notified if they are listed as an emergency contact. Kids location can be shared with their guardian through the Find People app on Apple Watch and it also allows customisable location notifications for tracking.

With kids getting their own Apple ID, they can follow their schedule and family events using Calendar, learn to manage tasks with Reminders, view photo albums synced from a guardian’s iPhone, and more. The Apple Watch also lets kids play songs on Apple Music through Bluetooth headphones and speakers, prompt the virtual assistant Siri for queries and use maps for navigating.

Using the App Store on Apple Watch, kids can download third-party apps on the device, while parents can manage what is available for download through Content Restrictions and Ask to Buy support. The Watch also includes a mode called Schooltime, that displays a yellow circle on the Watch face, signifying hat access to apps is restricted and Do Not Disturb is turned on. Parents can also schedule the Schooltime mode before hand.

For health and fitness tracking Apple Watch has been optimised for kids to track Move minutes instead of kilojoules burned and provide customisable goals for the Exercise and Stand rings. Workout modes such as Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, and Outdoor Cycle have been specifically tuned for kids, said Apple.

Apple Intelligence: Apple Music to feature AI-generated playlist artworks

Apple Intelligence: Apple Music to feature AI-generated playlist artworks

Representative image: Apple Music

Apple Music on iPhones will reportedly get Apple Intelligence-powered features with iOS 18 update. According to a report by 9To5Mac, the new iOS 18 developer beta four contains a line of code that suggests that soon Apple Music users will get the ability to generate AI artworks for playlists.

According to the report, a new string of code in the fourth iOS 18 developer beta enables a “Create Image” button on the editing page of a Playlist in Apple Music. This button, reportedly, leads to the new Image Playground feature that Apple announced at its annual developer conference while launching the iOS 18 operating system. The new Image Playground app will allow iPhone users to prompt Apple Intelligence to generate images in different styles such as animation, sketch, illustration and more.

With Apple Intelligence integration into the Apple Music app, the service would likely offer users an option to generate an image which they could set as the playlist’s artwork.

The feature is still under development and not available on iOS 18 Beta for testing. However, Apple is expected to soon start testing Apple Intelligence features in the future iOS 18 beta updates. Apple Intelligence brings system-wide AI capabilities such as writing assistance, summarisation, image generation and more. While not all, Apple is expected to release some of these features in preview with the initial iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia public release – around September.

In related news, the recently released iOS 18 developer beta four brings several new improvements and changes. Available on eligible iPhone models, the update adds a new “Controls Menu” in the Settings app for the Camera that reportedly “Preserves” the previously used camera tools when the controls menu is expanded. Other notable changes include new window sizing option for mirroring the iPhone screen on a Mac, expanded Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging support in the UK, Canada and Spain, and system-wide minor redesigns to app icons and user interface.
