China’s Xiaomi is set to launch the Redmi Pad Pro in India on July 29. The tablet will be a flagship-grade tablet in Xiaomi ecosystem, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. The tablet is available in select markets already, and now making its way to India. For context, the tablet was introduced in Xiaomi’s home country in April this year.


The Redmi Pad pro 5G will sport a 12.1-inch display of 120Hz refresh rate and support 600 nits of peak brightness. The tablet will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset and pack a 10,000mAh battery. At the front, it will be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Xiaomi has claimed a standby time of 33 days and 12 hours of video playback. The tablet will operate on its latest HyperOS. The device will feature a quad-speaker audio system with support for Dolby Atmos. It will also be accompanied by Stylus and keyboard.


The tablet will arrive with up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and will support up to 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. It will also support up to 1.5TB of expandable storage that can be expanded via microSD card slot. Talking about camera, the Redmi Pad pro will feature a 8MP rear camera and 8MP front camera. It is also expected to support 33W fast charging.


The Redmi Pad Pro had earlier appeared on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification website, indicating imminent launch in the country. Appearing on certification sites suggests that the device is being officially tested according to the safety standards of the region and will soon be launched in the market.

India announced it will cut import duty on mobile phones and some key parts to 15% from 20%, a move that will directly benefit Apple, which still imports its high-end smartphones into the country despite increasing local production.


Presenting the annual budget for 2024/25 in parliament on Tuesday, India’s finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said import tax on mobile phones, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and mobile chargers is in the “interest of consumers.”


Almost 10-12% of the Apple iPhones are imported each year into India and a 5% reduction in tax on the devices will result in a $35-50 million annual benefit to Apple, said Neil Shah, a co-founder at Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research.


Although Apple has boosted its local production in India through contract manufacturers such as Foxconn and India’s Tata Group, it still imports some of its high-end Pro and Pro Max iPhone models into the country.


Apple “will directly benefit … they (also) have some models for which PCBAs are still being imported,” said Shah.


The move will also “alleviate import duties for new players entering the market. It’s a gamechanger for them,” he added.


Other manufacturers such as Samsung would also benefit, but to a lesser degree as the majority of their smartphones are locally made, said a source with direct knowledge of the matter.


Apple and Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.


Apple has a 6% share of India’s smartphone market, according to Counterpoint.


India’s deputy IT ministry in January privately argued for a reduction on import taxes on mobile phones, saying the country risks losing out to China and Vietnam in the race to become a major smartphone export hub and must “act fast” to lure global companies with lower tariffs, Reuters has reported.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has in recent years promoted India as a smartphone manufacturing hub and the nation’s $24-billion local production scheme covers mobile phones, prompting companies such as Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung and Vivo to expand local operations.


China’s Xiaomi has also in the past asked for tariff reductions on sub-components used in batteries, USB cables and phone covers.

Apple is reportedly working on the next-generation iPhone SE model, which is expected to launch in spring next year. According to a report by 9To5Mac, specification details of the more affordable iPhone model has surfaced online, suggesting that the fourth-generation iPhone SE could bring major upgrades in all spheres.

According to the report, the next-generation iPhone SE model would be powered by the A18 chip, which will debut with the iPhone 16 series. This suggests that the iPhone SE 4 could get support for artificial intelligence tools and features coming to iPhones with iOS 18. As per the report, it would either get 6GB RAM or 8GB RAM.


The anticipated iPhone SE is expected to sport a 6.06-inch OLED display panel of 60Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the next iPhone SE model could drop the circular Touch ID sensor and get a FaceID sensor, similar to the current generation iPhone model. The smartphone would also likely get the USB Type-C port instead of the Lightning connector.  


As for the camera, the iPhone SE is expected to get a single camera set up at the back, similar to the previous generation model but the sensor would likely be a 48-megapixel lens instead of the 12-megapixel on the predecessor.


iPhone SE 4: Expected design


According to media reports the next-generation iPhone SE could get a more modern look with a flat aluminium frame, similar to the iPhone 15. However, it is expected to get a glossy back panel unlike the current generation iPhone model. The iPhone SE could also get the Action Button instead of the Mute Switch similar to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max model, as Apple is reportedly planning to replace the mute switch with the Action Button on all iPhone models with the iPhone 16 series.


iPhone SE 4: Expected price


Previously, it was reported that Apple could increase the price of the next generation iPhone SE model by up to 10 per cent in the US, compared to the current model. The 10 per cent hike in the launch price of the iPhone SE fourth-generation could see it launch at $469. It is also entirely possible that Apple launches the next iPhone SE model at $429, same as the current generation model.

With the advent of Apple Intelligence, Apple is expected to power all of its upcoming products, including entry level devices such as next generation iPhone SE, standard iPad models, and more with the latest generation chipset.


According to a report by 9To5Mac, the next generation iPhone SE model, which is reportedly under the works, will be powered by an A18 chip. A18 chips are expected to debut with the iPhone 16 series models and would likely feature a new neural processing unit (NPU), called Neural Engine by Apple, to run artificial intelligence features.


The report also stated that Apple is currently working on a HomePod model that would come with a built-in display. Apple would also likely put the same A18 chip within this. If true, the HomePod with display could be the first Apple Home device to get some of the Apple Intelligence features.


Similarly, the report stated that Apple could update the entry level iPad models and the new generation iPad Mini with the latest chip. Although Appler Intelligence is not coming to older generation devices, all new Apple Products are expected to get the AI treatment in some way or the other.


Why are the latest chips required?


With Apple making its debut on to the AI stage, the company is expected to incorporate AI into all its upcoming devices to take on the rivals such as Samsung, Google and Microsoft. However, Apple’s new AI features, which it calls Apple Intelligence, require specific hardware to function correctly.


During a talk show at the Apple’s annual developers conference, Apple’s software engineering chief, Craig Federighi explained the company’s decision to limit Apple Intelligence to iPhone 15 Pro models in the current iPhone line-up. He said that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are powered by the A17 Pro chip, which features a 16-core Neural engine. It is this section of the processor that is tasked with handling AI workloads. Compared to the Neural engine on the A16 bionic chip, which powers the vanilla iPhone 15 models, A17 Pro offers more processing power.
