India's first pvt deeptech hub launches in NCR, aiming to mobilise $100 mn

Deeptech venture capital (VC) firm 8X Ventures, Arctic Invent, and SanchiConnect have joined forces to launch India’s first privately managed deeptech innovation hub that will engage with up to 10 deeptech startups in the first year with no dilution on the equity front.

Collectively, the hub targets to mobilise $100 million in the Indian deeptech ecosystem.

The hub will operate from a campus in Noida with more than 7,000 square feet of area and has ambitious growth plans to move to a larger 100,000 square feet space over the next year to accommodate the growing interest from startups, VCs, and related ecosystem members.

The facility will feature space for state-of-the-art labs, collaborative workspaces, critical shared resources to scale deeptech startups, and exclusive access to industry-leading mentors and experts, according to an official announcement from the grouping.

The hub is collecting interests for participation at www.deeptech.social.

Chirag Gupta, managing partner, 8X Ventures, talking about the initiative, said, “We hold the conviction that Indian deeptech innovators of today will become globally transformative companies tomorrow. That only happens with sufficient support. It is about time that NCR’s growing startup ecosystem had a hub like the one we are building.”

8X Ventures, an early-stage deeptech VC firm led by Chirag Gupta, recently announced the first close of its second INR 200 crore deeptech fund. Their previous fund has invested in Solinas Integrity, XYMA Analytics, Patherun Technologies, Lightspeed Photonics, and Zenpulsar.

SanchiConnect, a software-as-a-service platform, supports over 3,000 deeptech startups and more than 500 academic incubators, mentors, corporates, institutional funds, and technology partners.

Further, Arctic Invent, founded in 2013, is a full-service intellectual property rights (IPR) consulting firm that helps businesses protect their innovations and creative works.

Talking about the initiative, Sunil Shekhawat, CEO, SanchiConnect, said, “We are excited to lay the foundation of India’s first privately managed deeptech innovation hub. This initiative intends to support the deeptech ecosystem in the country by offering vital support and resources to startups that have moved past the incubation phase. We aim to help them focus on their core business and bring their ideas to market steadily.”

Nothing to launch Phone 2a 'Plus' variant on July 31: What to expect

Nothing to launch Phone 2a 'Plus' variant on July 31: What to expect

Nothing, the British consumer technology brand, has announced that it will be launching a “Plus” variant of the Nothing Phone 2a on July 31. In a press note released by the company announcing the name and the launch date, Nothing said that an “extraordinary new smartphone is coming.”

Additionally, on social media platform X (formerly twitter), Nothing posted the announcement with a tagline “Plus. More. Extra.”, suggesting that the smartphone could be identical to the Phone 2a that launched earlier this year but with a larger display.

Nothing Phone 2a Plus: What to expect

Availability

Before the official announcement of the Phone 2a Plus, several media reports surfaced stating that a new smartphone by Nothing has been spotted on multiple certification websites including UAE’s TDRA (Telecommunication and Digital Government Regulatory Authority) certification site and India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). However, there are no specification details available for the upcoming Nothing Phone 2a Plus currently.

Community Edition Project?

Nothing in March announced “The Community Edition Project” inviting its community members to participate in designing, packaging, and customising a version of Phone 2a smartphone. The process was divided into four stages – hardware design, smartphone wallpapers, packaging and marketing. While the first three stages have already been completed, Nothing on July 10 announced that it was starting the final stage for marketing the smartphone.

In a post on X announcing the stage 4, Nothing said that the product is almost ready and now “it’s time to look at the bigger picture.”

It is unlikely that Nothing will launch two separate variants of the Phone 2a in a quick succession and thus it is possible that the Phone 2a Plus is the Community Edition Project variant.

New SpaceX spaceship to replace International Space Station; check details

New SpaceX spaceship to replace International Space Station; check details

US space agency Nasa has announced that SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will push the International Space Station on course toward its final descent. (Photo: X@SpaceX)

An era in space exploration will conclude when the International Space Station (ISS) is anticipated to be decommissioned in the early 2030s. Considered the epitome of international cooperation in space, the ISS will be succeeded by a next-generation Dragon spacecraft, developed by Elon Musk-owned SpaceX.

US space agency Nasa has already announced that it would pay Elon Musk’s company SpaceX up to $843 million to help decommission the ISS. On Wednesday (17 July), Nasa and SpaceX shared that the Dragon spacecraft will be “powerful enough to pull the ISS out of orbit into a fiery plummet to a remote ocean grave, probably in 2031.”

Later, in a post on X, SpaceX said, “With 6X more propellant and 4X the power of today’s Dragon spacecraft, SpaceX was selected to design and develop the US Deorbit Vehicle for a precise, controlled deorbit of the @Space_Station.”

How will the Dragon spacecraft replace the ISS?

The Dragon spacecraft will push the ISS on course toward its final descent. While Nasa has not chosen a precise location yet, it said that the ISS will be pushed into a remote part of the South Pacific Ocean. However, the US space agency has clarified that when the football field-sized spacecraft comes screaming down, there will be no risk of it hitting anywhere but the open ocean.

After the ISS is decommissioned, Nasa and its Russian counterpart, Roscosmos, will go their separate ways and transition to new space stations. Once it is decommissioned, Nasa intends to transition into smaller, privately-owned space stations closer to the Earth’s surface. This will be a significant shift from the present, as the ISS, launched in 1998, is jointly maintained in low Earth orbit by five space agencies –  Nasa (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada).

How will SpaceX make its dragon spacecraft ‘superpowered’?

According to SpaceX, it will attach a new high-powered trunk to its existing Cargo Dragon. Subsequently, it will supercharge the vehicle with 46 Draco engines, which is 30 more engines than a regular Dragon spacecraft.

With six times as much propellant to produce four times the power, SpaceX hopes its Dragon spacecraft will be about twice as long as a regular Dragon ship. This ‘deorbit vehicle’ will have the capability to deorbit the ISS and ensure the avoidance of risk to populated areas. Notably, the ISS is maintained 250 miles above Earth’s surface.

The current Dragon spacecraft is capable of carrying up to seven passengers to and from Earth orbit and beyond. According to the SpaceX website, it is the only spacecraft currently flying that is capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth.

“In 2012, Cargo Dragon became the first commercial vehicle to dock with the ISS and, if all goes according to plan, the new Dragon spacecraft will be the last vehicle to ever dock with the station,” said Sarah Walker, SpaceX’s director of Dragon mission management, in the press briefing.
