Dyson launches OnTrac headphones with customisable design: Check details

Dyson has launched its maiden high-fidelity headphones called Dyson OnTrac. The Singaporean technology company, known for its household appliances, offers customisation options on its first audio-only headphones with interchangeable caps and cushions for a more personalised experience.

“With over 30 years of experience in aeroacoustics, we’ve mastered sound physics. By reducing noise through in-house anechoic chambers and expert engineers, we’ve applied and further expanded our audio knowledge to develop the Dyson OnTrac headphones,” said Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer.

Dyson OnTrac headphones: Details

The Dyson OnTrac headphones uses custom Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) algorithms that the company said utilises the eight microphone setup on the device to sample external sound 3,84,000 times per-second. This enables the OnTrac headphones to offer noise cancelling up to 40dB. Additionally, the headphones boast 40mm, 16-ohm neodymium speaker drivers for producing frequencies ranging from 6Hz to 21,000Hz.

As for the battery life, Dyson said that the headphones are powered by two lithium-ion batteries that offer up to 55 hours of playtime on a single charge with ANC enabled.

The headphones offer connectivity with smartphones through the MyDyson app that also offers features such as real-time soundtracking that monitors in-ear and external volume. The app also has three custom EQ modes for the headphones-  Bass Boost, Neutral and Enhanced.

Dyson OnTrac headphones: Availability and colours

The Dyson OnTrac headphones will be available soon in India with four colour options – CNC Aluminium, CNC Copper, CNC Nickel, and Ceramic Cinnabar. Additionally, the headphones will come with over 2,000 customisable colour combinations for outer caps and ear cushions.

Google Gemini on Android can now answer questions on lock screen

Google Gemini on Android can now answer questions on lock screen

Google Gemini has been less useful on the lock screen as it required the user to unlock the phone for even answering the simplest question. However, after receiving new updates, Google Gemini on Android can now answer ‘general questions’ even from the lock screen.

Now when a user asks a question, they will get an immediate response. But when the user taps the display anywhere, they will be asked to unlock the phone. The new feature also includes a Gemini on Lock screen that lets users turn it on or off.

Gemini prompts users to authenticate themselves if they tap on the screen or the text input box and after authenticating the fingerprint, the keyboard appears. When a user converses with Gemini from the lock screen for the first time, Google highlights the new change on the response page.

A new Gemini on lock screen setting will appear on the main preferences page on the phone when the feature is activated. The Gemini responses on lock screen toggle accompanies the already existing Google Assistant on lock screen option.

The feature is rolling out gradually and might require enabling it manually. Google has updated its support pages detailing how to turn the feature on or off.

Gemini has been limited to Google Assistant-level commands uptill now, like controlling alarms and timers, playing and pausing media and changing volume. This used to work by calling upon the Google Assistant. Google has been trying to update Gemini to promote the AI assistant across its services.

Apple denies using YouTube videos for training Apple Intelligence: Report

Apple denies using YouTube videos for training Apple Intelligence: Report

Apple has clarified that its artificial intelligence features that the company collectively calls Apple Intelligence is not powered by the company’s OpenELM AI model. According to a report by 9To5Mac, the cupertino-based technology giant, in a statement to the media outlet stated that “OpenELM doesn’t power any of its AI or machine learning features – including Apple Intelligence.”

This comes after a Wired report stated that many technology giants including Apple, Nvidia and Amazon-backed Anthropic used material from thousands of YouTube videos, including video subtitles to train their AI models. The report mentions that Apple used plain text of video’s subtitles along with its translations into different languages to train its OpenELM model.

Google prohibits the use of videos posted on YouTube for applications that are “independent” of the video platform.

In its statement to 9To5Mac, Apple said that it created the OpenELM to contribute to the research community and advancing open source large language model (LLM) development. According to the company, OpenELM was only created for research purposes rather than for powering AI features on its products and devices.

Apple Intelligence training

Previously, in a research paper published by Apple on June 10, the company said that it does not use its “users’ private personal data or user interactions” for training its AI models. However, the tech giant did say that it uses “publically available data” from the web using its web-crawler AppleBot. The company said that web publishers have to opt-out if they wish to not allow Apple to use their web content for Apple Intelligence training.

Apple OpenELM: What is it

In April, Apple released its OpenELM AI model on the Hugging Face model library. OpenELM, which stands for “Open-source Efficient Language Models”, is a series of four small language models that are capable of running on devices such as Phones and PCs.

The four models within OpenELM come with 270 million parameters, 450 million parameters, 1.1 billion parameters, and the largest with 3 billion parameters, respectively. These parameters refer to the number of variables an AI-model can understand from its training data for decision making.

For comparison, Microsoft’s Phi-3 model can go up to 3.8 billion parameters. Similarly, Google’s open model Gemma, which was launched earlier this year, offers up to 2 billion parameters.

OpenAI's Sam Altman would make a good Marvel villain: Scarlett Johansson

OpenAI's Sam Altman would make a good Marvel villain: Scarlett Johansson

Actor Scarlett Johansson has raised her concerns about OpenAI and deepfake technology, calling it “so disturbing” and expressing frustration after the company allegedly mimicked her voice for its ChatGPT system – Sky. She also took a jibe at OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, suggesting he would make a good “Marvel villain”.

The actor made headlines earlier this year when she issued a public statement revealing that Altman had approached her in September 2023 to lend her voice for Sky, a nod to her role in Spike Jonze’s film ‘Her’. Johansson declined the offer for “personal reasons”. In May, when the company launched Sky, Altman tweeted a cryptic ‘Her’.

Following Johansson’s statement and her lawyers’ intervention, OpenAI pulled the voice but insisted that Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her natural speaking voice.

Altman later clarified that the actor voicing Sky had been hired before he contacted Johansson as an additional, sixth voice. He apologised to Johansson and announced that they had paused Sky “out of respect for” her.

In an interview with The New York Times, Johansson shared her bewilderment and anger over the situation. “I had actively avoided being part of the [AI] conversation, which made it so disturbing. I was like, ‘How did I get wrapped up in this?’ It was crazy. I was so angry.”

“I felt I did not want to be at the forefront of that,” she added. “It just felt like it went against my core values. I don’t like to kiss and tell. He came to me with this and I didn’t tell anybody except my husband … I also felt that for my children it would be strange. I try to be mindful of them,” she said.

Johansson described deepfake technology as a “dark wormhole you can never climb your way out of”.

“Once you try to take something down in one area, it pops up somewhere else. There are other countries with different legislation and rules. If your ex-partner is putting out revenge, deep fake porn, your whole life can be completely ruined,” she said.

“I think technologies move faster than our fragile human egos can process it, and you see the effects all over, especially with young people. This technology is coming like a thousand-foot wave,” she added.

When asked if Altman could make for a good Marvel villain, she quipped, “I guess he would – maybe with a robotic arm.”

Johansson’s public clash with OpenAI comes three years after her legal battle with Disney over the release of her Marvel movie Black Widow. The movie was released in theatres and on Disney+ during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Johansson argued that her contract stipulated an exclusive theatrical release, with her compensation tied to box office performance.

Disney’s initial response was surprisingly combative, even disclosing Johansson’s upfront fee of $20 million. Johansson fired back, calling the studio’s response ‘misogynistic’.

The two parties eventually settled for an undisclosed amount, though Deadline reported Disney would pay Johansson over $40 million.

Reflecting on the Disney dispute, Johansson told The New York Times, “I don’t hold a grudge [against Disney]. I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time. It just felt very unprofessional to me, the entire ordeal. And honestly, I was incredibly disappointed, especially because I was holding out hope until, finally, my team was like, ‘You have to act’.”

TikTok owner can't avoid bloc's law crackdown on digital giants: EU court

The ruling can be appealed to the EU’s Court of Justice, the bloc’s highest court, but only on points of law. Photo: Bloomberg

TikTok owner ByteDance can’t avoid the bloc’s crackdown on digital giants, a European Union court said Wednesday in a decision that found the video sharing platform falls under a new law that also covers Apple, Google and Microsoft.

The EU’s General Court rejected ByteDance’s legal challenge against being classed as an online “gatekeeper that has to comply with extra obligations under the 27-nation bloc’s Digital Markets Act.

The rulebook, also known as the DMA, took effect this year and seeks to counter the dominance of Big Tech companies and make online competition fairer by giving consumers more choice.

TikTok had argued that it wasn’t a gatekeeper but was playing the role of a new competitor in social media taking on entrenched players like Facebook and Instagram owner Meta.

The judges, however, decided that since 2018 TikTok had succeeded in increasing its number of users very rapidly and exponentially and that it had rapidly consolidated its position, and even strengthened that position over the following years.

We are disappointed with this decision,” the company said in a prepared statement. TikTok is a challenger platform that provides important competition to incumbent players. TikTok said it will evaluate its next steps and noted that it has already taken measures to comply with the DMA.

The Digital Markets Act took effect in March, with a list of dos and don’ts for big tech gatekeeper companies aimed at giving users more choices and threatening big penalties if they don’t comply.

The ruling can be appealed to the EU’s Court of Justice, the bloc’s highest court, but only on points of law.
