TikTok owner can't avoid bloc's law crackdown on digital giants: EU court

TikTok owner ByteDance can’t avoid the bloc’s crackdown on digital giants, a European Union court said Wednesday in a decision that found the video sharing platform falls under a new law that also covers Apple, Google and Microsoft.

The EU’s General Court rejected ByteDance’s legal challenge against being classed as an online “gatekeeper that has to comply with extra obligations under the 27-nation bloc’s Digital Markets Act.

The rulebook, also known as the DMA, took effect this year and seeks to counter the dominance of Big Tech companies and make online competition fairer by giving consumers more choice.

TikTok had argued that it wasn’t a gatekeeper but was playing the role of a new competitor in social media taking on entrenched players like Facebook and Instagram owner Meta.

The judges, however, decided that since 2018 TikTok had succeeded in increasing its number of users very rapidly and exponentially and that it had rapidly consolidated its position, and even strengthened that position over the following years.

We are disappointed with this decision,” the company said in a prepared statement. TikTok is a challenger platform that provides important competition to incumbent players. TikTok said it will evaluate its next steps and noted that it has already taken measures to comply with the DMA.

The Digital Markets Act took effect in March, with a list of dos and don’ts for big tech gatekeeper companies aimed at giving users more choices and threatening big penalties if they don’t comply.

The ruling can be appealed to the EU’s Court of Justice, the bloc’s highest court, but only on points of law.

Google takeover target Wiz another fruit of Israeli military intelligence

Google takeover target Wiz another fruit of Israeli military intelligence

An elite Israeli military intelligence unit may once again be about to prove its value to the nation’s tech economy as Google’s parent eyes cybertech company Wiz for an eyewatering $23 billion.

Alphabet Inc , a person familiar has said, is in advanced talks to buy Wiz from founder Assaf Rappaport, a former officer from the famed 8200 military unit, which has built a track record in turning out tech entrepreneurs.

As the war in Gaza squeezes Israel’s economy, the deal underscores the resilience of the tech industry, which accounts for some 20% of the country’s output and around 15% of jobs. It also highlights the military’s role in developing one of Israel’s most successful sectors.

Along with universities, Israel’s military intelligence and technology units, such as 8200, have provided the leaders for hundreds of tech start ups, helping to turn Israel into what is widely considered the No. 2 tech centre globally after Silicon Valley.

Check Point Software Technologies, Nice, Palo Alto Networks, CyberArk, Wix and Waze – bought by Google for $1 billion – are a handful of companies whose founders have military roots.

Rappaport credits the Israeli military for his success, once calling the 8200 unit “the best school of entrepreneurship.” He served there with his “army buddies” Yinon Costica, Roy Reznik and Ami Luttwak, with whom he co-founded his previous cloud security company Adallom in 2012, which they sold to Microsoft three years later for $320 million.

In 2020, at the outset of the COVID pandemic, the four started cloud cyber security company Wiz, rapidly building it into a company that was given a $12 billion valuation after a $1 billion funding round in May this year.

“In a way it’s like raising tigers and then releasing them to the wild,” Gili Raanan, founder of Venture capital firm Cyberstarts and general partner at Sequoia Capital said of the intelligence units.

8,200 GRADUATES DOMINATE

He said being from an elite intelligence unit is not a requirement for him when investing, however, “90% to 95% of the teams I see are made up made up of 8200 graduates.” “So whether I look into that or not, that’s the talent pool I am looking at.”

Part of the reason is the free wheeling, meritocratic nature of the units, which allow their graduates to move smoothly into the startup world after their service ends, said Raanan, who was an initial investor in both Adallom and Wiz – now headquartered in New York with R&D in Tel Aviv.

Rappaport did not initially want to accept money from Sequoia for Adallom in 2012 and declined a number of meeting requests from Raanan.

Raanan insisted and he eventually agreed to meet at a gas station about 40 minutes north of Tel Aviv. “Essentially we signed the terms on a napkin in a gas station.” While Israel has mandatory post-high school military service, the intelligence units have the right of first refusal so they “can screen for the best people,” said Dror Bin, chief executive of the Israel Innovation Authority.

8200 is the army’s main information gathering unit, where 18-21-year old soldiers develop and use tools to gather information, which they pass on to senior officials. It’s Israel’s version of the U.S. National Security Agency.

Less known is 81, the Intelligence Corp’s Technological Unit that supplies cutting-edge technologies to Israeli combat soldiers.

Rappaport also served in this unit, which has been the launchpad for many cyber, AI and fintech firms once soldiers return to civilian life.

START-UP STRENGTH

Despite the cloud cast over the economy by the Gaza war, Israeli companies have been among the major beneficiaries of the boom in demand for cloud security and have benefited from a number of strong financing rounds.

Industry group Startup Nation Central on Wednesday said in a report that private funding in Israeli startups rose 31% to $5.1 billion in the first half of 2024 from the second half of 2023, with cybersecurity contributing 52% of the funding.

“One might expect the ‘Israeli factor’ to have a stronger impact on the Israeli tech activity, but the data suggests otherwise,” Avi Hasson, Startup Nation Central chief executive, said.

If the Wiz acquisition goes ahead, it would eclipse a $15.3 billion purchase of Mobileye by Intel in 2017 and provide at least $1 billion of tax income into Israeli coffers.

“Even if it doesn’t happen, it’s a sign of confidence in the Israeli tech sector,” said Bin.

“Deciding to make such a big investment in an Israeli based company during time of war means that it’s really a good deal,” he said adding he expected to see more.

“There are many good targets in Israel today for such acquisitions. And maybe even this potential decision of Google will accelerate investment decisions of others.” Amiram Shachar, CEO and co-founder of Israeli cloud security firm Upwind Security said Google potentially buying Wiz is the “best thing” that could have happened for both the cybersecurity and cloud industries and Israel’s ecosystem will benefit.

“It confirms that the cloud is the future,” he said, “and underscores the need to build comprehensive platforms, not just feature-specific companies, to protect it.”

Fitterfly collab with Google Cloud to launch AI feature for diabetic people

Fitterfly collab with Google Cloud to launch AI feature for diabetic people

Google I/O Connect Bengaluru 2024 event

Fitterfly, a leading healthtech company in India, has partnered with Google Cloud to launch its latest AI feature – Fitterfly Klik, which will enable people with diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to track and analyse their meals effortlessly.

Nutrition planning remains the most important bulwark for managing type 2 diabetes as well as for weight loss and heart disease. However, traditional meal tracking methods – be it through manual journaling or entering in a text format in an app – are cumbersome and discouraging for many.

Fitterfly’s latest feature, Klik, changes all this by leveraging the power of Gemini Flash 1.5 on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform. This transforms meal tracking into a quick and insightful experience.

“Klik makes meal logging possible in a few seconds, even with multiple dishes on a plate,” said Ammar Jagirdar, Head of Fitterfly X-Labs. “Multimodal models today are surpassing traditional image classification methods in accuracy, even on a complex problem like food.”

Fitterfly Klik uses AI computer vision paired with the Fitterfly Nutrition Database, comprising over 37,000 Indian foods, to recognize, analyse, and break down food.

Within the Fitterfly app, users can access Klik within the meal-tracking food diary by clicking on the camera icon. A user can also access Klik through a chat with JEDi, Fitterfly’s AI Coach. A user can Klik while having a meal or upload images from the picture gallery in one go in the evening. It will instantly provide feedback on that food item, its portion size and give detailed nutritional breakdowns like calorie count, macronutrient and micronutrient distribution.

Klik’s advanced algorithms analyse the food’s image and its nutritional data and directly sync it to the user’s Meal Diary on the Fitterfly app. Users can also add additional items from the same plate if all dishes aren’t visible in the initial photo.

“Indians eat more than 32 cuisines and a ‘food cam AI’ was difficult to develop for both identification and serving size estimation,” said Dr. Arbinder Singal, Fitterfly’s Co-founder and CEO. “Klik is a step towards helping millions of people make better choices and enabling better health outcomes.”

Bikram Singh Bedi, Vice President and Country MD at Google Cloud India said that combined with Fitterfly’s dataset and Gemini’s multimodal capabilities, both teams collaborated to identify the right model to help bring this powerful idea to life in an extremely short duration.

The initial outcomes from the Fitterfly Klik beta phase are encouraging: users save significant time and effort logging meals, as evidenced by a 90 per cent reduction in clicks. Validation tests confirm that Klik can precisely identify a wide range of food items and their portion sizes. This ensures that users have the most accurate nutritional information.

Instagram's new audio feature to let users add up to 20 tracks to a reel

Instagram's new audio feature to let users add up to 20 tracks to a reel

Instagram has announced a feature that lets users add multiple audio tracks to reels. With Multi-audio Tracks on Reels, the Meta platform will let users add up to 20 tracks to a single reel and match audio with elements like text, stickers and clips while editing in the app. This will allow users to align tracks with the clips. The new feature is available for Indian users of Instagram from today.

Once a user adds multiple tracks, they will also be creating a unique audio mix that will be attributed to them. This audio mix can be saved and reused by others on Instagram.

To add a new track to the reel, tap on the “Add to mix” option in the Reel editor. After adding the tracks, users can trim them to keep only the portion of audio that they want.

The new feature was announced on Instagram via a post with the caption, “Starting today, you can add up to 20 tracks to a single reel and visually align audio with elements like text, stickers, and clips while you’re editing in the app. Swipe through to learn more!”

On this development, Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, stated, “Starting today you can add up to 20 audio tracks to a single reel, giving you more creative freedom with your content. You can align your audio with text, stickers and clips while editing it within Instagram. When you do this, you’ll also create your own unique audio mix that fans can save and reuse. Give a try and let me know what you think ”

This feature appears to be a step to encourage users to focus on short-form content. Mosseri had recently said that Meta-owned social media platform Instagram will focus on short-form content over long videos. Instagram will not be focusing on long-form video as it might “undermine” the platform’s “core identity to connect people with friends.”

Pixel 9 series: Google may introduce new camera sensors across all models

Pixel 9 series: Google may introduce new camera sensors across all models

Google will be launching the Pixel 9-series smartphones at the “Made by Google” event, scheduled for August 13. The series is expected to bring major upgrades, including new camera sensors. According to a report by Android Authority, the Google Pixel 9 series smartphones are expected to get a major boost in the imaging department, especially with a new front facing camera sensor on the Pro models and auto focus functionality on the standard Pixel 9.

Google Pixel 9 series: Variants

Google is expected to introduce more than two smartphones in the Pixel 9 series this year. Alongside the standard Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones, the series could be joined by the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold phone. Unlike previous generation models, the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro are likely to have displays of the same size, while the Pro XL model will feature a larger screen similar to that of the current generation Pixel 8 Pro smartphone. Google is also expected to incorporate the Pixel Fold book-style foldable smartphone into the flagship number series, rebranding it as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Google Pixel 9 series: Camera upgrade

Pixel 9

According to the report, Google is likely to upgrade almost all the camera sensors across the Pixel 9 lineup. On the standard Pixel 9, Google is expected to incorporate a new Sony IMX858 ultra-wide-angle camera sensor to replace the existing Sony IMX386. The new ultra-wide camera sensor would likely improve low-light photography on the smartphone with a larger aperture.

While both the front and rear camera sensors are expected to be the same as the current generation model, Google would likely add auto focus for the front-facing camera.

Pixel 9 Pro series

Both the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphones are expected to retain the primary camera sensor from the pixel 8 Pro. However, both the ultra-wide and the telephoto cameras are expected to be the new Sony IMX858 sensor. Additionally, Google would likely get the 50MP IMX858 on the front as well, bringing significant upgrades to the front facing camera on the Pro models.
