Pixel 9 series: Google may introduce new camera sensors across all models

Google will be launching the Pixel 9-series smartphones at the “Made by Google” event, scheduled for August 13. The series is expected to bring major upgrades, including new camera sensors. According to a report by Android Authority, the Google Pixel 9 series smartphones are expected to get a major boost in the imaging department, especially with a new front facing camera sensor on the Pro models and auto focus functionality on the standard Pixel 9.

Google Pixel 9 series: Variants

Google is expected to introduce more than two smartphones in the Pixel 9 series this year. Alongside the standard Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones, the series could be joined by the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold phone. Unlike previous generation models, the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro are likely to have displays of the same size, while the Pro XL model will feature a larger screen similar to that of the current generation Pixel 8 Pro smartphone. Google is also expected to incorporate the Pixel Fold book-style foldable smartphone into the flagship number series, rebranding it as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Google Pixel 9 series: Camera upgrade

Pixel 9

According to the report, Google is likely to upgrade almost all the camera sensors across the Pixel 9 lineup. On the standard Pixel 9, Google is expected to incorporate a new Sony IMX858 ultra-wide-angle camera sensor to replace the existing Sony IMX386. The new ultra-wide camera sensor would likely improve low-light photography on the smartphone with a larger aperture.

While both the front and rear camera sensors are expected to be the same as the current generation model, Google would likely add auto focus for the front-facing camera.

Pixel 9 Pro series

Both the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphones are expected to retain the primary camera sensor from the pixel 8 Pro. However, both the ultra-wide and the telephoto cameras are expected to be the new Sony IMX858 sensor. Additionally, Google would likely get the 50MP IMX858 on the front as well, bringing significant upgrades to the front facing camera on the Pro models.

Google unveils latest AI technologies to support Indian developers

The Google DeepMind India team shared updates to empower developers building language solutions for India.

Tech giant Google on Wednesday unveiled a range of tools, programmes, and partnerships aimed at empowering Indian developers and startups to lead the global AI revolution. At the Google I/O Connect Bengaluru 2024 event, the company announced its collaboration with the MeitY Startup Hub to train 10,000 startups in AI, expanding access to its AI models like Gemini and Gemma. Google is also introducing new language tools from Google DeepMind India and enhancing the software development process with AI-powered features, maintaining a steadfast focus on responsible AI.

As part of its Gemini era, Google is focused on bringing the power of multimodality to everyone. It is expanding the types of questions that can be asked with advances in long context windows. Today, more than 1.5 million developers globally use Gemini models across its tools. The fastest way to build with Gemini is through its developer platform, Google AI Studio. India has one of the largest developer bases on Google AI Studio today.

“At Google, we’ve been investing in AI for over a decade, driving fundamental advancements that have led us to the exciting Gemini era. AI is a powerful enabler and a major inflection point that will require us to continuously reimagine what’s possible,” said Ambharish Kenghe, Vice President, Google. “We’re committed to empowering Indian innovators to harness AI’s full potential, creating solutions that not only address India’s unique needs but also shape the future of AI globally. The opportunities with multimodal, mobile, and multilingual AI are immense,” Kenghe added.

Google is democratizing AI for Indian developers by focusing on three key areas with transformative potential in India: multimodal, multilingual, and mobile. The company is working with MeitY Startup Hub to support 10,000 Indian startups in their AI journeys through Google Cloud credits, an AI-first programming curriculum, and the launch of a nationwide GenAI Hackathon and AI Startup Bootcamp. Developers in India now have expanded access to Google’s powerful AI models with the 2 million token context window in Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemma 2, the next generation of open models.

The Google DeepMind India team shared updates to empower developers building language solutions for India. This includes the expansion of Project Vaani, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This initiative provides developers with over 14,000 hours of speech data across 58 languages, collected from 80,000 speakers in 80 districts. The team also introduced IndicGenBench, a comprehensive benchmark to evaluate the generation capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in Indic languages, and open-sourced CALM (Composition of Language Models), a framework that allows developers to combine specialised language models with Gemma models. Google also introduced the MatFormer framework, enabling developers to mix and match AI models within a single framework for optimal performance and resource efficiency.

“India is at the forefront of the AI revolution, as you can see from the innovation that Indian companies are pioneering. From consumer experiences to agriculture to social enterprises, AI has the power to address some of the biggest challenges of our time across many sectors and industries,” said Seshu Ajjarapu, Senior Director, Google DeepMind. “At Google, we remain committed to helping developers and entrepreneurs advance and deploy technology that makes a palpable difference in people’s lives.”

Google is also introducing Google Wallet APIs to simplify the integration of loyalty programmes, tickets, and gift cards. For developers using Google Maps Platform, India-specific pricing is being introduced with up to 70 per cent lower costs on most APIs (application programming interface). Google is also collaborating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), offering developers building for ONDC up to 90 per cent off on select Google Maps Platform APIs.

“AI is transforming the very fundamentals of software development – including how developers think about what’s possible and how they build it. At Google, we believe all developers are AI developers, and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to build with AI across surfaces, be it web, mobile, or cloud,” said Jeanine Banks, Vice President and General Manager, Developer X, Google. “We’ve been thrilled and inspired by the enthusiastic embrace of our AI capabilities by India’s growing developer ecosystem, and we can’t wait to see the innovations they will pioneer with Google’s expanding AI models, tools, and app development suite announced today.”

The company will also soon launch the Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) Research API, a limited availability tool designed to make agricultural practices more data-driven and efficient. Google also gave a glimpse into innovative AI agents aimed at streamlining workflows, with open-sourcing Project Oscar, a reference for an AI agent that helps with open-source project maintenance.

Google ends Notes experiment it introduced in Search in November last year

Google ends Notes experiment it introduced in Search in November last year

Google Search Labs introduced a Notes experiment in November last year. The idea was to create a personalised search feature for user-generated insights and encourage discussions. With this feature, Google allowed users to attach public or private notes to search results. The feature was similar to Reddit forum, X Community Notes, and comments section.

Notes aimed to allow users to leave helpful tips about an article in Search results or Discover. According to 9to5Google, the feature is now coming to an end without launching. It will be available till the end of July and if you left Notes you can download them until the end of August using Google Takeout.

“We’re excited to continue testing new ways to connect people to authentic, relatable voices and look forward to bringing some of our learnings from Notes into future product experiences,” Google told 9to5Google.

After signing up for the experiment, users saw “Add note” and “Notes” buttons. Users could add annotations with etc and images to search results links in the Google app. The Notes button lets users see what other people shared. A grid of stories opened which users could like, share and save for later. Google leveraged algorithmic projections and human review for this feature. Google has said that “people want to hear from others like them and Notes was an exploration of how to help people share their knowledge right on Search.”

Notes initially had an end date of December 2023. Google has said that it will continue testing new ways to connect people to authentic and relatable voices.

Google working with govt to support 10,000 startups in GenAI solutions

Google’s Build with AI event series has already engaged 25,000 developers across 43 cities in India, providing hands-on experience.

Google supports 10,000 Indian startups in building generative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, said the technology giant on Wednesday, forecasting the country will lead a “revolution” in the technology.

The company, at its Google I/O Connect Bengaluru 2024 event, said it is working with the MeitY Startup Hub, set up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, for the project. “Indian startups are going to lead the AI revolution,” said Seshu Ajjarapu, senior director at Google DeepMind.

Google’s Build with AI events have provided 25,000 developers in 43 cities “hands-on experience” in the company’s latest AI and machine learning technologies. “The Global Gemini API Developer Competition continues to unearth applications that push the boundaries of AI innovation,” said the company.

The company has a three-month equity-free Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First programme that nurtures AI-first startups with mentorship and support in AI/ML, UX, Android, web, product, leadership and growth. The 2024 cohort kicked off its programme with a boot camp at Google’s Bengaluru office this week.

Google said it is “deeply encouraged” by the progress Indian startups have made in building GenAI solutions. At I/O Connect, three startups showed how they used Gemini, the company’s AI chatbot, to build solutions that address real-world challenges.

Miko.AI developed an AI-powered robot for children, minding information that is age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and regionally relevant. To ensure this, Miko.AI employs Google’s Gemini as a “discerning judge” and quality control mechanism for its AI models.

“Our goal is to ensure Miko Robots provide safe, reliable, and culturally appropriate interactions for children worldwide, and Gemini is key to achieving this,” said Sneh Vaswani, co-founder and chief executive officer of Miko.AI.

Gemini scrutinises responses from Miko’s proprietary text-based large language models to ensure they meet standards for young audiences. Gemini plays a crucial role in Miko’s automated quality assurance and security processes.

Karya, a startup that aims to empower low-income communities through AI-enabled economic opportunities, has built a digital work platform that allows participants to build AI datasets of their own. The platform, which uses Gemini, has enabled Karya’s partners in India to earn 20 times the local minimum wage.

Gemini is also helping Karya’s global partners streamline task management, translating complex flows into simple instructions. It also enables real-time status updates via natural language queries.

“With the power of Gemini, we are able to take Karya Platform global, and enable low-income communities everywhere to build truly ethical and inclusive AI,” said Manu Chopra, co-founder and CEO, Karya.
