OnePlus on July 16 launched the Pad 2 at its Summer Launch event held in Milan, Italy. The second-generation tablet from the Chinese electronics maker is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, thereby bringing artificial intelligence features for improved productivity experience. Like the first-generation model, the Pad 2 is offered in Wi-Fi connectivity, but with the option for cellular data sharing when paired and connected with a supported OnePlus smartphone. The tablet also boasts connect sync feature, which simplifies data sharing with supported OnePlus devices. Alongside the Pad 2, OnePlus introduced the supported accessories such as the Stylo 2 and the OnePlus Smart Keyboard.

OnePlus Pad 2: Availability and offers


The OnePlus Pad 2 will be available from August 1 on Amazon, Flipkart, OnePlus online store, OnePlus Store App, Myntra, OnePlus Experience Stores, and at select offline partner stores. ICICI Bank and OneCard Customers can avail an instant bank discount of Rs 2,000 on the OnePlus Pad 2 on select channels. Moreover, customers can avail no-cost EMI for up to nine months from select banks.


On accessories, OnePlus is offering up to 50 per cent discount on the bundle deal – when purchasing any of the supported accessories together with the Pad 2.


OnePlus Pad 2: What is new


The OnePlus Pad 2 features AI-powered productivity tools such as AI Speak and AI summary for sharing information from a wide range of websites and apps, and AI Writer for composing messages and text from user prompts. The second-generation tablet also gets media editing tools such as AI Eraser and Smart Cutout alongside features for generating summary of voice recordings and text transcripts.


OnePlus has brought its “Open Canvas” feature from OnePlus Open to the Pad 2. Open Canvas enables multitasking by offering up to three split-screen apps simultaneously, with each app shown in its best adaptation, plus the ability to extend the flow beyond the OnePlus Pad 2’s screen.

China’s OnePlus on July 16 launched the Nord 4 smartphone at its Summer Launch event, which was held in Milan, Italy. The smartphone boasts a metallic unibody design, but most importantly a suite of artificial intelligence features for media editing, audio transcriptions, text generation, and text summarisation. OnePlus stated that some of the AI features it previewed at the launch will arrive through firmware update later this year. OnePlus Nord 4: Details


The OnePlus Nord 4 boasts an aluminium unibody design, reminiscent of the OnePlus 3 series. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 system-on-chip (SoC), paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5x RAM. The smartphone is offered in two on-board storage configurations, 128GB with UFS 3.1 type and 256GB with UFS 4.0. OnePlus has committed to roll out software updates for four years and security patches for six years.


The OnePlus Nord 4 sports a 6.74-inch 1.5K AMOLED display of 120Hz refresh rate. On the camera front, the Nord 4 sports a dual-camera set-up on the back, featuring a 50-megapixel main sensor (Sony LYTIA) with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and electronic image stabilisation (EIS), and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. On the front, the smartphone sports a 16MP camera sensor.


The smartphone is powered by a 5,500 mAh battery, supported by 100W SUPERVOOC wired charging. OnePlus said that it has integrated its proprietary “Battery Health Engine” technology that adapts to users’ charging habits, optimising power input and charging times to preserve battery life.


OnePlus Nord 4: AI features


The OnePlus Nord 4 will feature media editing tools such as “AI Best Face”, “AI Eraser”, and more. According to the company, AI Best Face feature recognises human faces, expressions, and improves group photos by “magically opening” the eyes of the subjects. For the AI Clear Face, OnePlus said that the feature will bring extra definition to faces. While AI Clear Face will be available at launch, AI best face feature will be launching later this year. These new tools will be added to the list of existing AI tools such as the AI eraser and Smart Cutout.


Apart from media editing features both the OnePlus Nord 4 and the Pad 2 will feature productivity-related AI features such as AI Speak, AI summarise, AI Writer, and more. AI Speak and AI Writer, which will be coming to the devices later this year, will help share information from a wide range of websites and apps, according to the company. AI Writer would be able to compose messages and text based on user prompts while AI Speak will read out texts on web pages and apps. Both devices will also get features for generating summary of voice recordings and text transcripts.

Apple is reportedly adding a new “Recovered” Photo album to the iPhone’s Photos app with the iOS 18 update. According to 9To5Mac, Apple has started rolling out the new feature to the beta version of iOS 18. This feature will enable users to see and recover previously damaged or lost images that are still stored on the device’s internal storage.


The report stated that the new “Recovered” album will be available on the Photos app for select iPhones, iPads, and Macs that are eligible for the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates.


For devices that have already received the new Photos album, the feature can identify and locate previously lost or damaged media, including both pictures and videos. These media files will then be available in the new “Recovered” album, which exists alongside the existing “Recently Deleted” section.


Reportedly, once a device is updated to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia, the feature will automatically scan for recoverable files. Additionally, the “Recovered” album will only appear if there are any lost or damaged media files on the device. According to the report, Apple introduced this new feature to address a bug in iOS 17.5 that caused deleted pictures and videos on iPhones to resurface.


Earlier this year, multiple iPhone users reported that after updating their iPhones to iOS 17.5, deleted pictures started to reappear in their device’s gallery. Apple later released the iOS 17.5.1 software update to officially address the issue. Apple stated that the “rare issue” was caused by a few deleted pictures experiencing database corruption, making them reappear in the Photos library.

Dell on July 16 launched its maiden Copilot Plus AI PCs in India, powered by the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus chips. The new Dell XPS 13 and Inspiron 14 Plus laptops are the first by US-based PC maker based on Microsoft’s new Copilot Plus PC platform, which brings exclusive artificial intelligence features. Dell has announced that both the XPS 13 and Inspiron 14 Plus laptops come with AI-powered features that utilise the AI processing capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips. These features include:


Cocreator: the Cocreator feature uses generative AI to compile text prompts provided by the user along with a rough layout that they draw to generate a full image. Additionally, users can also make changes to the images in real-time.


Live Captions: The Live Caption feature allows users to translate any live or pre-recorded audio in real-time. The company said that the feature works with video calls and can translate 44 languages into English.


In addition to these AI features, the laptops also get Windows Studio effects for adjusting the lighting, adding backgrounds, and filters during video calls.

India’s top smartphone brands — Apple, Samsung, Google Pixel, Oppo, and Xiaomi — have introduced AI-powered features over the past year and a half. Google launched Gemini, Samsung unveiled Galaxy AI, and Apple released Apple Intelligence. Oppo and Xiaomi, based in China, are also integrating similar AI technologies into their devices.


Yet, the five best-selling brands – which control over 45 per cent of India’s $40 billion smartphone market – are struggling to find consumers for their AI-backed devices, according to a Mint report. This is despite a large young population of smartphone users in India who agree that AI is the next big thing.


In this context, industry observers have argued that while consumers may not be willing to shell out extra bucks on AI features in smartphones, AI-enabled laptops may hold the key to opening up the market. They told Mint that laptops, which offer higher computing power compared to smartphones, have a greater productivity use case.


According to experts, laptops loaded with AI features are likely to lead adoption as professionals from all verticals – ranging from coders to content creators – use AI tools on laptops for heavy tasks. This is evident, they say, as AI features in smartphones – like live transcription, translation, photo, and audio editing – are not attracting more customers as expected.


The laptop market is growing steadily in India. As per Mint research, brands shipped around 10 million laptops to retailers in India last year, amounting to approximately $5.5 billion in revenue. If experts’ projections are to be believed, AI features will take the laptop market to $6.5 billion in revenue this year.


Consumers’ inclination towards laptops with AI features is likely to become apparent in the next two financial quarters, added industry experts. Meanwhile, the smartphone market is projected to witness a mid-single digit growth this year.
