The development of artificial intelligence (AI) models in radiology for early tuberculosis (TB) detection is gradually gathering steam, with several Indian health tech companies initiating models to integrate them into screening efforts.

Delhi-based independent non-profit organisation Wadhwani AI and Mumbai-based startup Qure.ai are among those that have started to build AI-based solutions for TB screening and detection.

While Wadhwani AI is working on the development and deployment of AI solutions in partnership with the union health ministry and agencies such as the Central TB Division (CTD) and USAID, Qure.ai is looking to leverage deep learning technology to analyse chest radiographs and detect abnormalities associated with TB.

Studies suggest that AI algorithm-based TB screening can lead to a jump in notifications and help identify 30 to 40 per cent more incidental cases that would have been left undiagnosed in India, which already has a large share of the worldwide burden of the infectious disease.

Experts believe that while the integration of AI models can help in early TB detection due to their ability to analyse medical images with enhanced precision, a permanent solution might still be far away.

Highlighting the potential of AI-based solutions in TB screening, Shibu Vijayan, chief medical officer, global health, Qure.ai, said that it can become the primary method for TB screening in the next five years as AI can help better predict individual and population-level vulnerability to TB.

“AI can analyse chest X-rays with high accuracy and identify signs of TB that may be missed by human radiologists. X-rays are very sensitive in detecting lung abnormalities even before symptoms like cough present,” he said.

Speaking of their AI tools, Nakul Jain, director, products and programs, Wadhwani AI, said that their AI model employs advanced computer vision to automate the interpretation of Line Probe Assay (LPA) strips for diagnosing drug-resistant TB at the diagnostic level.

“Our AI tool named ‘Cough Against TB’ uses cough sounds and symptom data collected via a mobile app used by healthcare workers, enabling cost-effective and early TB detection,” Jain said.

A cough detector AI model validates that the audio recordings contain cough bouts. After successful verification, a cough-based TB classifier (AI model) predicts the TB likelihood score, while a tabular AI model also estimates the TB score based on the symptoms, their duration, and comorbidities.

“The outputs of these two models are combined into an ensemble AI model to predict whether the person is likely to have pulmonary TB,” Jain added.

Similarly, Qure.ai’s qXR software can identify over 30 abnormalities in chest X-rays, providing detailed insights into the presence of TB and other lung diseases.

“qXR is capable of incidental case finding, helping to identify TB in populations undergoing X-rays for other reasons, thereby improving overall detection rates,” Vijayan said.

He added that the solution has been deployed in over 90 countries and 2,700 sites, scanning about a million chest X-rays annually, demonstrating its scalability and effectiveness.

While AI solutions for screening TB hold tremendous promise, they can face common challenges due to data integration and variability in healthcare settings.

Highlighting other major challenges, Jain said that some challenges from real-world deployment reveal patient refusal, often due to TB stigma, as a significant barrier, especially in convincing asymptomatic individuals to undergo testing.

“Additionally, in active case-finding settings, individuals may not share their symptoms properly, reducing the effectiveness of symptom-based screening,” he added.

Vijayan noted that another challenge can be the proliferation of unregulated AI solutions. “As this is a new area, many AI products are available as open-source, free, or cheap options. However, many do not meet the standards set by the Government of India,” he said.

Jain added that such issues are typical for any new technology and are being actively addressed through better frameworks, protocols, and continuous refinement.

“As these systems evolve and improve, we can expect more seamless integration and enhanced reliability across diverse healthcare environments,” Jain said.

While the technology is in its early validation stages, if successful, it could help identify individuals for X-ray screening, where AI can then identify probable TB cases for confirmatory testing.

OpenAI whistleblowers have filed a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, calling for an investigation over the artificial intelligence company’s allegedly restrictive non-disclosure agreements, the Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing a copy of the letter sent to the SEC.

The whistleblowers alleged that OpenAI issued overly restrictive employment, severance and nondisclosure agreements to its employees, which could have led to penalties against workers who raised concerns about OpenAI to federal authorities, according to the newspaper.

The AI company made employees sign agreements that required them to waive their federal rights to whistleblower compensation, according to the letter seen by the Washington Post.

The agreements also required that employees get prior consent from the company if they wanted to disclose information to federal regulators, the newspaper said, adding that OpenAI did not create exemptions in the employee nondisparagement clauses for disclosing securities violations to the SEC.

An SEC spokesperson said in an emailed statement that it does not comment on the existence or nonexistence of a possible whistleblower submission.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for a comment on the Washington Post report.

OpenAI’s chatbots with generative AI capabilities, such as engaging in human-like conversations and creating images based on text prompts, have stirred safety concerns as AI models become powerful.

OpenAI in May formed a Safety and Security Committee that will be led by board members, including CEO Sam Altman, as it begins training its next artificial intelligence model.

EU slaps charges on Elon Musk's X over disinformation and illegal content

EU slaps charges on Elon Musk's X over disinformation and illegal content

The European Union (EU) is cracking down on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, for transforming it into a hotbed of disinformation and illegal content.

The EU Commission on Friday issued formal charges against X, accusing it of violating the EU’s stringent social media regulations. This pioneering case, initiated under the bloc’s new Digital Services Act (DSA), could result in hefty multi-million euro fines for X. The DSA is a landmark law designed to curb toxic and illegal online content, holding platforms accountable for their algorithms and user activities.

Musk’s X has been a focal point of Brussels’ scrutiny since the billionaire acquired the platform in 2022. Accusations against X include allowing disinformation and hate speech to flourish, implementing misleading authentication features, and obstructing external researchers from analysing how harmful content spreads on the platform.

The European Commission, which regulates over two dozen of the world’s largest online platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, launched its first formal investigation into Musk’s firm in December 2023. Friday’s charges mark the first-ever enforcement action under the DSA.

The Commission’s preliminary findings reveal that X’s ‘blue checks’ system misled users into trusting dubious content. Originally intended to verify the identities of public figures, journalists, and government officials to combat misinformation, Musk’s policy shift allowed users to purchase blue check accounts. This change has been exploited by fraudsters impersonating prominent figures like US politician Hillary Clinton and author JK Rowling.

In addition, the platform failed to maintain a searchable and reliable advertisement repository and restricted researchers’ access to its public data, the Commission stated.

X now has the opportunity to defend itself against these charges and suggest measures to address the EU’s concerns. The Commission continues to investigate whether X has breached rules related to the spread of illegal content and has taken adequate steps to mitigate disinformation.

This case sets a significant precedent as the EU ramps up its enforcement of the DSA, with ongoing investigations into other major companies like AliExpress, Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok over issues such as insufficient consumer protection and addictive algorithms.

iPhone 16 series: Apple to bring back camera parity in Pro models this year

iPhone 16 series: Apple to bring back camera parity in Pro models this year

Apple iPhone 15 series | Photo: Bloomberg

Apple is reportedly planning to equip the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models with identical camera systems. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will include the tetraprism camera, introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year, in the next generation of Pro models.

Last year, Apple for the first time introduced a different camera system among the iPhone Pro series, featuring a 5X optical zoom telephoto camera on the Pro Max and a 3X zoom lens on the compact Pro model. However, this year, Apple might revert to the strategy it employed up until 2022.

iPhone 16 series: New chip

Apple is also expected to equip all four models of the iPhone 16 series with the same processor. In the iPhone 15 series, Apple introduced the A17 Pro chip for the Pro models, while the standard and Plus models were powered by the previous year’s A16 Bionic chips. According to a report by MacRumors, all four models in the iPhone 16 series will be powered by the same chip, which is anticipated to be the A18 chip.

Apple might still differentiate the Pro models by incorporating more Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) cores. This strategy could help distinguish the Pro models from the standard iPhone 16 variants. Additionally, Apple might brand the chip in the Pro models as the A18 Pro.

iPhone 16 series: What is expected

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models are also anticipated to feature the “Action Button,” which debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. The customisable Action Button will replace the mute switch and bring more functionality with options for more actions apart from muting the device.

Moreover, Apple is likely to add a new dedicated camera button, which the company may call the “Capture Button.” Unlike the Action Button, which was exclusive to the Pro models, the Capture Button is expected to be available across the iPhone 16 series. It would likely be haptic in nature rather than mechanical, with the haptic engine allowing users to take camera actions with customisable gestures such as a single tap to focus and a double tap to click a picture.

Apple Intelligence

While the new artificial intelligence features within iOS 18, collectively referred to as Apple Intelligence, are coming exclusively to the Pro models in the iPhone 15 series, Apple might bring these tools to the standard models as well with the upcoming series.

Apple Intelligence features, introduced by Apple at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), bring system-wide tools powered by generative AI for text generation, summarisation, image generation, and more. Additionally, Apple’s virtual assistant Siri receives enhanced capabilities and improved in-app control through AI integration. Apple has also integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI chatbot, which iPhone users can directly access for assistance.
