Samsung could expand Galaxy AI-powered 'Live Translate' feature to WhatsApp

Samsung could expand Galaxy AI-powered 'Live Translate' feature to WhatsApp

Samsung could expand its Galaxy AI-powered “Live Translate” feature to WhatsApp. Recently, the South Korean electronics maker announced that this feature will support third-party applications soon. Now, reports suggest that the support apps could include Meta’s instant messaging and calling platform WhatsApp. If it comes true, Galaxy AI, Samsung’s suite of artificial intelligence features, will power real-time translations on WhatsApp.

Samsung’s suite of artificial intelligence features was launched in January and the brand has confirmed that it will be free to use until 2025. Live Translate offers translations between languages for messages and calls in real time. The feature works through on-device processing and Samsung has said that user data is stored locally on the device and not sent through the server.

The feature is already available for Samsung apps but was anticipated for third party apps in upcoming days. It should be noted that Live Translate is already available for calls and messages via Samsung’s built-in messaging app. This feature is expected to arrive to WhatsApp via the OneUI 6.1.1 update and might work on select Galaxy smartphones only. Samsung is likely to make the announcement at the Galaxy Unpacked event to be held in Paris on July 10. Samsung might also launch One UI 6.1.1 update for Galaxy smartphones at the event.

As of now, if users have a compatible device, this feature will translate their voice to the preferred language of the person on the other end and translate the voice of the other person into the user’s preferred language. Users can also see the live transcription of the translation on the screen. The translation occurs in real-time. Live Translate for third-party apps will improve messaging and calling for users who prefer other communication platforms.

There is no certainty about when the feature will be launched. Reportedly, Live Translate will also be available with other third-party calling apps such as Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and Google Meet.

iOS 18 developer beta 3: What is new in Apple's platform update for iPhone

iOS 18 developer beta 3: What is new in Apple's platform update for iPhone

Apple has released iOS 18 developer beta 3 to eligible iPhone models. The platform update brings several new features, including new dark mode icons, select option in Photos app, emoji in Messages, and more. Moreover, it is the first iOS 18 beta version with reference to Apple Intelligence, according to consumer technology news website MacRumors. Here is everything new in the iOS 18 developer beta 3:

iOS 18 beta 3: What is new

Dark mode app icons

With iOS 18 developer beta 3, Apple has added new dark mode app icons on the home screen for third-party apps. According to a report by 9To5Mac, the new feature is likely using machine learning to perform image separation for app icons. App icons with white background are instantly turned into black, while some third-party apps that have simpler logos with only select colours are also getting darker theme icons. According to reports, Apple is not converting more complex icons, however, it is adding a darker tint to add the dark theme effect.

Dynamic colour wallpapers

The iOS 18 exclusive wallpapers were available in the previous release, but the third beta brings a new “Dynamic” option for these default wallpapers, which adds a colour changing effect. According to a report by 9To5Mac, the colours on the wallpaper automatically change at various points throughout the day.

Emoji

With iOS 18 beta 3, Apple has combined emoji, memoji and stickers into a unified interface that allows access to all of these through icons placed at the bottom of emoji keyboard. According to MacRumors report, users can also create stickers and memoji directly from this interface. Additionally, Apple has also increased the size of the emojis within the keyboard for easier accessibility.

Photos

Photos app has received a minor yet a functional upgrade. With the iOS 18 beta 3, the “Select” option within the Photos app is now always visible. Previously users had to swipe down on the photos grid to make it appear.

Flashlight

The interface for the flashlight has also received an update. When a user enables the flash light, there is now a bigger interactive interface available that drops down from the dynamic island, allowing users to change the spread of the flash or change the brightness level.

RCS messaging

Apple has also updated the RCS Messages section in the Settings app that now offers more details about the service. According to reports, the toggle for enabling RCS messaging now also has additional information that explains to users that sending and receiving messages with RCS uses wireless data, and cellular network identifiers may be shared with carriers and their partners.

According to a report by MacRumors, some iPhone users in Canada have reported that the RCS messaging option is now visible to them. RCS messaging on iPhones is currently limited to the select markets.

Apple Intelligence

As per MacRumors report, the iOS 18 beta 3 code has mentions for select Apple Intelligence features such as Genmoji, Image Playground, Writing Tools, Image Wand, and more. This suggests that Apple could start rolling out Apple Intelligence features in subsequent beta releases.

Microsoft Xbox TV with Cloud Gaming service lands on Amazon Fire TV Sticks

Microsoft Xbox TV with Cloud Gaming service lands on Amazon Fire TV Sticks

Xbox app on Amazon Fire TV stick

Microsoft has launched its Xbox TV app on Amazon Fire TV Sticks, making Xbox Cloud gaming accessible on Amazon’s media streaming devices. For users with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, this is a new way to stream titles on compatible Fire TV devices. The app was announced by Microsoft last month.

The Xbox app is available on select Fire TV Sticks, including the Fire TV 4K Max (2023) and the Fire TV Stick 4K (2023). Users can only stream titles that are available as part of Game Pass at present. Reportedly, Microsoft is planning to give users access to the entire Xbox library in the next few months. Access to titles from publishers that are not part of Xbox Cloud Gaming will be excluded though.

An Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, a compatible Fire TV Stick, and a Bluetooth-enabled wireless gaming controller are required to access Xbox titles on the Fire TV device. Users will be able to access popular video game titles such as Starfield, Fallout 4, and Forza Horizon 5 through an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which is priced at Rs 549 per month in India. Users can start streaming titles after downloading the Xbox app for Fire TV from Amazon Appstore.

The Xbox TV app is already available on mobile devices, Xbox consoles, and select Samsung monitors and TVs. Amazon Fire TV Sticks are the first streaming devices to get this app from Microsoft though. Microsoft had earlier partnered with Meta to roll out an Xbox Club gaming app for Quest VR headsets.

How to get started with Xbox cloud gaming on Fire TV stick

  • Connect the device: Attach an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023) or Fire TV Stick 4K (2023) to your television and download the Xbox app from the Amazon Appstore.

  • Sign In: Once the app is installed and opened, it will prompt you to sign in using your Microsoft account.

  • Subscription: If you already have an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, sign in and begin gaming. If not, you will need to sign in and then subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

  • Trial Games: For select games such as Fortnite, the app offers trials without any membership requirement.

  • Connect Controller: Once your Microsoft account is set up on the Fire TV Stick, connect a compatible Bluetooth controller and start gaming.

Microsoft intends to offer Apple devices to employees in China: Report

Microsoft intends to offer Apple devices to employees in China: Report

Microsoft (Photo: Reuters)

Microsoft intends to offer Apple’s iOS-based devices to its employees in China to access authentication apps, a company spokesperson said on Monday, citing absence of Google’s Android services in the country.

Microsoft has been under increased scrutiny after a series of security breaches, the latest being that of Russian hackers who spied and accessed emails of the company’s employees and customers earlier this year.

The development was first reported by Bloomberg News, which, citing an internal memo, said the Windows OS-maker instructed its employees in China to use Apple devices at workplace from September.

As a part of Microsoft’s global Secure Future Initiative, the move to switch to iOS-devices stems from the lack of availability of Google Play Store in China that limits its employees’ access to security apps such as Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass, the report added.

“Due to the lack of availability of Google Mobile Services in this region, we look to offer employees a means of accessing these required apps, such as an iOS device,” a company spokesperson told Reuters in an email.

Microsoft is among those U.S. companies that have a strong presence in China. It entered the Chinese market in 1992 and also operates a large research and development center in the country.

The company will provide iPhone 15 models to employees, currently using Android handsets across China, including Hong Kong, the Bloomberg report said.
