Apple files patent for multiple smart rings that can work in unity: Report

Apple files patent for multiple smart rings that can work in unity: Report

Apple has reportedly filed patents for multiple smart rings, each with distinct functionalities but designed to work together. According to a report by 9To5Mac, Apple’s latest patent for a smart ring outlines how multiple rings could be worn simultaneously while serving different purposes. The patent also reportedly details how Apple plans to integrate Siri into a potential Apple Ring, along with features such as the ability to wirelessly charge a ring using another ring.

The report states that Apple’s patent for a “ring device that may be worn on a user’s finger” describes the device as having near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, gesture detection for “controlling equipment,” and a microphone to detect voice input.

The report further explains that due to space constraints in a ring-like device, they may be separate devices with different sets of components depending on the desired functionality. For example, one ring could function as a “motion-controlled remote control” device for “controlling external devices using motion input,” another could be a “voice-controlled ring” with a microphone and a speaker for “voice-assistant functions.” A third device could include health monitoring sensors such as an electrocardiogram sensor, a photoplethysmogram sensor, a temperature sensor, an ultraviolet light sensor, an inertial measurement unit, and a grip sensor.

While Apple might be planning three separate smart rings with different functionalities, the company also intends to make them work together. According to the report, Apple stated in its patent filing, “Motion data from a first device may be used to determine a gaze direction towards a second device so that ring input may be directed towards the second device.” The filing also details how the mapping of locations for different devices might be achieved by generating a “combination of pointing input, voice input, gaze input, and/or touch input.” Additionally, the document reportedly mentions that a user may wear two ring devices on the same finger, allowing one to act as a power source for the other.

While it is unclear whether Apple is working on launching an “Apple Ring” following Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Ring, the patent filings suggest that Apple is exploring the concept.

Instagram introduces “song on profile” feature similar to Myspace: Details

Instagram introduces “song on profile” feature similar to Myspace: Details

Instagram has announced a new feature allowing users to add a song to their profile. The selected music will be displayed in the bio area of the user’s profile, according to screenshots shared by Instagram. Users will have the option to remove or replace the song as desired.

This feature is reminiscent of the one available on Myspace in the early 2000s; however, unlike Myspace, the songs will not autoplay. Visitors to a user’s profile can play and pause the added song at their convenience.

“We’re excited to announce that you can now add a song to your profile, giving you more ways to express yourself through music. Your profile song selection will be live until you swap out the song,” Instagram stated in a post by its creators account.

How It works

Users can access the “edit profile” page and select “Add music to your profile.” After that, they can search for and choose a song from Instagram’s library of licensed music, the same library available for Reels and posts. The duration of the music can be up to 30 seconds.

This new feature is being launched in collaboration with singer Sabrina Carpenter. Her profile will feature a teaser of her new song, “Taste,” ahead of its official release. Instagram has mentioned that the song can only be heard through this feature before its release.

Additional updates

In related news, Meta-owned Instagram is reportedly testing a change to users’ feeds that could replace the squares in the profile grid with vertical rectangles. According to The Verge, this change is currently in the testing phase and has been noticed by some users. The report suggests that Instagram has been exploring a change to the aspect ratio of the profile grid since 2022.

Google introduces 'Essentials' app for Microsoft Windows PCs: What is it: Technology News

Google introduces 'Essentials' app for Microsoft Windows PCs: What is it: Technology News

Google Essentials app for Windows

Google has introduced a new app, called “Google Essentials,” designed as a one-stop hub for accessing various Google services such as Google Photos, Google Messages, and more on a Microsoft Windows PC. Google Play Games on PC, currently in its beta phase, will also be available through this new app. Google Play Games is a PC application that allows users to play smartphone games on their Windows PCs.

Google Essentials app for Windows: What it is and how it will work

In a blog post explaining the new app, Google stated, “You can open Google Essentials right from the start menu and easily switch between your phone and laptop.” While the company has not provided details on the user interface, it mentioned that services like Google Photos and Google Messages will be accessible within the Essentials app. The app will also offer shortcuts to Google Workspace services, including Google Docs, Drive, Calendar, and more. Additionally, Google is offering a 2-month trial of a Google One 100GB subscription to eligible users.

Regarding Google Play Games, the company noted that the service will not only allow users to play smartphone games on Windows but will also enable them to sync their in-game progress. This feature will let players pick up where they left off on their Android smartphones or vice versa.

Google Essentials app for Windows: Availability and compatibility

The new Google Essentials app will initially be available on HP-made PCs. Google announced that the app would be rolled out to both consumer and gaming series PCs from HP, including the Spectre, Envy, Pavilion, OMEN, and Victus series. The HP OmniBook series will receive the app at a later stage.

Google stated that once the Essentials app is available, HP PC users will be able to install other Google apps when “setting up a new PC.” This suggests that the Essentials app will come preloaded on new HP laptops. However, Google confirmed that the app can be uninstalled at any time by the user.

The Google Essentials app is not available for download through a standalone link and is currently rolling out exclusively to HP laptops and desktops. However, Google mentioned that the app would be expanded to more laptops and desktops in the coming months.

Apple to update browser options in EU, make applications more deletable

Apple to update browser options in EU, make applications more deletable

Apple will change how users choose browser options in the European Union, add a dedicated section for changing default apps, and make more apps deletable, the company said on Thursday.

The iPhone maker came under pressure from regulators to make changes after the EU’s sweeping Digital Markets Act took effect on March 7, forcing it to offer mobile users the ability to select from a list of available web browsers on a “choice screen” the first time they open Safari.

In an update later this year, Apple users will be able to select a default browser directly from the choice screen after going through a mandatory list of options.

A randomly ordered list of 12 browsers per EU country will be shown to the user with short descriptions, and the chosen one will be automatically downloaded, Apple said. The choice screen will also be available on iPads through an update later this year.

Apple released a previous update in response to the new rules in March, but browser companies criticized the design of its choice screen, and the Commission opened an investigation on March 25 saying it suspected that the measures fell short of effective compliance.

“We welcome Apple’s updated choice screen, particularly as it precedes the upcoming iPhone launches,” Andrew Frost Moroz, founder of Aloha browser, told Reuters.

“For those less familiar with us, the description will highlight these benefits, and fewer taps to start browsing will enhance the user experience and benefit third-party browsers,” he said.

Apple said it has been in dialogue with the European Commission and believes the new changes will address regulators’ concerns.

The Commission said on Thursday it will monitor the effectiveness of the solutions in achieving the objective of the DMA and will decide on the next steps in the open case.

It also plans to introduce a dedicated area for default apps where a user will be able to set defaults for messaging, phone calls, spam filters, password managers and keyboards.

Users will also be able to delete certain Apple-made apps such as App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos and Safari. Only Settings and Phone apps would not be deletable.
