Apple Watch Series 10 could bring anniversary special surprises: Report

Representative Image: Apple Watch Series 9

Apple Watch Series 10 is reportedly set to feature a larger display and a sleek design. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple plans to introduce significant changes to the standard Apple Watch in the next generation series to commemorate its tenth anniversary. The next-generation Apple Watch could sport a display size similar to the Apple Watch Ultra models. Additionally, Apple might brand the next Watch series as an anniversary model, similar to how the company rebranded the 2017 iPhone model as iPhone “X”.

Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3: Design

According to the Bloomberg report, Apple has internally codenamed two models of the Watch Series 10 as N217 and N218. Both models are anticipated to feature larger displays, comparable in size to the Apple Watch Ultra’s display. Additionally, these watches are expected to be thinner while maintaining a design similar to the current generation model.

As for the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra, the report indicated that the high-end model is not expected to undergo significant design changes.

Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3: Performance and Apple Intelligence

Both the Apple Watch Series 10 and Watch Ultra 3 are expected to be powered by a new chip. This new processor is reportedly designed to support future AI-powered tools and features, although Apple Intelligence AI features will not be integrated into the wearables at this time.

Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3: Features

Apple intended to introduce new health monitoring features, including high blood pressure detection and Sleep Apnea detection, in this year’s Apple Watch models. However, these features have been delayed due to reliability issues during testing. The Sleep Apnea detection feature, in particular, requires blood oxygen saturation level measurement, which has led to a legal dispute with Masimo Corp.

The report suggested that Apple could announce the new features at the anticipated launch event in late September but may not release them until a later date.

Apple is also working on glucose monitoring for Apple Watches, but this feature is not expected to be available on the Apple Watch Series 10 this year.

WhatsApp: Soon, you could send images to Meta AI for questions and edits

WhatsApp: Soon, you could send images to Meta AI for questions and edits

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to send images to Meta AI for questions or edits using prompts. According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, this feature was identified in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.14.20 for Android. With this feature, Meta AI will respond after users upload images and can also edit them if requested.

This feature will enable Meta AI to answer users’ questions related to the images, such as identifying locations or providing context. Users can also choose to have Meta AI edit their photos directly within the chat by sharing a prompt.

It is currently unclear to what extent Meta AI will be able to edit photos, whether it will be limited to minor changes or involve an AI-powered suite of photo editing features. This functionality will require Meta to evaluate and face-scan the uploaded photos. Reportedly, users will have the option to delete their photos whenever they wish.

The feature is still in development, and there is no certainty regarding when it will be available publicly.

Moreover, Meta has reportedly incorporated additional image-generation features into WhatsApp. These include a beta feature allowing Meta AI to create avatars for users based on their photos. Currently, Meta AI primarily offers text-related capabilities, but with these new features, it will expand into image-related functionalities as well.

Meta is also reportedly developing a new AI feature for WhatsApp that will enable users to generate images of themselves in various backgrounds and themes. According to a report by WABetaInfo, these AI-powered image generation capabilities have been identified in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android. Although the feature is still under development, it may be included in a future app update.

Gmail smartphone app gets email summarise option, powered by Gemini: Report

Gmail smartphone app gets email summarise option, powered by Gemini: Report

Google’s email client Gmail is getting a suite of artificial intelligence features. “Summarize this email” is the new one being introduced for the Gmail app on Android and iOS. As of now the feature is available only to paid users. The feature, reportedly, summarises long conversations and presents recap and highlights to the users to save time. The announcement regarding launch of this feature was made through a Google workspace updates post. Summarize for Android and iOS is rolling out widely and will be fully available in upcoming weeks.

Gmail: How summarize email option works

“Summarize this email” button, powered by Gemini, will be visible below the subject line. According to 9To5Google, the button for summarise feature is not visible in one-thread emails but appears when there are at least two responses. On tapping the button, after a few seconds a sheet slides up with bullet points and highlights. There is no space given at the bottom of the sheet to enter prompts or ask follow-ups but that could change after the launch of Gmail Q&A. The sheet is expandable and users can swipe down to view the latest summaries. Users can copy the recap presented and also rate the summaries depending on whether they found it helpful or not.

Gmail has earlier had a similar feature called “Help me write”. Google is also going to introduce Gmail Q&A and Contextual Smart Reply.

Recently, Gmail had rolled out Gemini side panels to Google Workspace users with Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, or Google One AI Premium subscription. The Gemini side panel powered by 1.5 Pro, in web Gmail summarises an email thread, helps in drafting an email, suggests responses to an email thread and asks questions and finds information from emails in inbox and files in Google Drive.

TCS, HCL earnings recovery may get further push from growth in AI demand

TCS, HCL earnings recovery may get further push from growth in AI demand

TCS and HCL have clung to outsourcing projects aimed at offering cost savings. Image: Bloomberg

Earnings guidance from Indian IT outsourcing firms including Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and HCL Technologies Ltd. will reveal how the much-awaited recovery is shaping up.

With US and European companies remaining weary of spending on new projects, TCS and HCL have clung to outsourcing projects aimed at offering cost savings. TCS results this week should show revenue growth picked up sequentially in the April-June quarter, consensus estimates show.

US-listed peer Accenture Plc’s management has indicated the boom in generative artificial intelligence is acting as a catalyst for businesses to rethink and invest in their IT systems. That should create revenue opportunities for firms like TCS and HCL.

Over in Japan, Uniqlo-owner Fast Retailing Co., and Ryohin Keikaku Co., which owns the Muji brand, should both see double-digit operating profit growth in the quarter. Warmer temperatures boosted sales of spring-summer clothing, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s LG Energy Solution Ltd.’s preliminary second-quarter operating profit fell below expectations as sales of electric vehicles continued to slow.

Highlights to look out for:

Thursday: Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS IN) quarterly profit should grow 8 per cent as the earnings recovery begins to take shape in the Indian IT space. Salary hikes should hurt margins compared with a quarter ago, though the pace of wage increases slowed, analysts at Prabhudas Lilladher said. TCS probably added more than 10,000 employees from a quarter ago, the first sequential headcount growth in a year. Watch for commentary on financial sector clients, which account for almost a third of revenue and have been a large part of the recent slowdown.

Fast Retailing’s (9983 JP) third-quarter operating income probably rose 12 per cent, estimates show. Sales in East and Southeast Asia should strengthen if economic sentiment improves, SMBC Nikko said. Its operating margin in China will be scrutinized amid sluggish consumer sentiment, the brokerage added. The retailer is also betting on new technologies, including checkouts without bar codes, to reach its target of 10 trillion yen ($62 billion) in annual sales.

Seven & i’s (3382 JP) first-quarter operating profit probably declined 7.7 per cent, consensus shows. Domestic and overseas sales were sluggish in March and April. The overseas business may achieve its fiscal 2025 operating profit growth target of 4 per cent, helped by improved gas volumes from 204 new stores and slight growth in gross margin, SMBC Nikko said.

Friday: HCL Technologies’ (HCLT IN) first-quarter earnings should be supported by robust revenue growth in the IT & business and engineering & R&D services units, consensus shows. It’s expected to repeat 2025 revenue growth guidance of 3 per cent-5 per cent at constant currencies, according to Nomura. Jefferies said a near-term growth recovery is unlikely as discretionary IT spending remains muted.

Ryohin Keikaku (7453 JP) should post quarterly operating profit growth of 15 per cent, as higher temperatures spurred sales of its spring-summer clothing. The China business has been struggling, but still outperforming the general apparel market in China, Jefferies analysts said in a June 10 note. The owner of Muji may include more affordable items in its lineup to fend off local rivals like Miniso and meet full-year earnings targets, BI said.
