OPPO sets Reno 12 series India launch for July 12: Expected specs, features

OPPO has scheduled the launch of its Reno 12 series smartphones in India for July 12. This series includes the standard OPPO Reno 12 and a Pro model, both equipped with artificial intelligence-powered features aimed at enhancing user experience. Both smartphones in the OPPO Reno 12 series will feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ 120Hz flexible AMOLED display. OPPO has confirmed “Quad-Micro Curved Infinite View” design for the display, which it claims has reduced side bezels to achieve a remarkable 93.5 per cent screen-to-body ratio.

The OPPO Reno 12 Pro will be available in Sunset Gold and Space Brown colours, featuring a dual-texture back panel. The upper part will feature OPPO Glow technology, resistant to smudges, while the lower section will have a glossy finish with the OPPO branding. The standard OPPO Reno 12 will be offered in Sunset Peach, Matte Brown, and Astro Silver colours.

In terms of durability, both models will boast “All-Round Armour protection technology”, which it said will make the phones resistant to drops and impacts. The chassis, OPPO said, is constructed from high-strength alloy for added robustness. Both devices will be IP65-rated for dust and water resistance, with reinforced components like speakers, USB-C port, and SIM card tray.

Powering the OPPO Reno 12 series is the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 system-on-chip, supported by OPPO’s AI-powered features. These include AI Clear Face, AI Writer, AI Recording Summary, and AI Eraser 2.0, among others.

Both models feature a 5000mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging support. OPPO claims these smartphones can be fully charged from 0 per cent in just 46 minutes.

The OPPO Reno 12 Pro will sport a triple-camera setup, featuring a 50MP SONY LYT-600 primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 50MP telephoto camera using the Samsung JN5 sensor for 2x zoom, and an 8MP Sony IMX 355 ultra-wide-angle lens.

In contrast, the standard OPPO Reno 12 replaces the telephoto camera with a 2MP macro lens while retaining the primary and ultra-wide-angle lenses.

For selfies, the OPPO Reno 12 Pro sports a 50MP front camera, while the standard model features a 32MP sensor.

From algorithms to emissions: Google struggles with AI's energy hunger

From algorithms to emissions: Google struggles with AI's energy hunger

Tech giant Google’s push to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across its core products has led to a significant environmental challenge: a sharp increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

The company’s latest environmental report shows a shocking 48 per cent rise in emissions since 2019, mainly due to increased energy use in its data centres and emissions from its supply chain.

AI systems, which need a lot of computing power housed in energy-hungry data centres, have become crucial in Google’s operations. But this technological progress comes at a cost. The International Energy Agency notes that a single Google search uses about 0.3 watt-hours of electricity, while more complex AI tasks, like those managed by Google’s advanced AI models, need much more energy.

Recognising these environmental impacts, Google has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, a goal now seen as ‘extremely ambitious’ given the uncertainties around AI’s future environmental effects. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, has promoted AI as key to the company’s strategy, integrating AI technologies like Gemini into flagship products such as Search and Google Assistant.

However, the rapid growth in AI infrastructure presents challenges. Google’s ongoing investment in expanding data centres, essential for AI’s computational needs, highlights the dilemma: balancing technological innovation with environmental sustainability. The company also admits that its data centre electricity use is outpacing efforts to switch to carbon-neutral energy sources.

Additionally, the water-intensive cooling systems needed for keeping data centre temperatures optimal pose another sustainability challenge. Despite Google’s aim to replace 120 per cent of its freshwater usage by 2030, recent figures show slow progress, with only 18 per cent replaced last year.

Still, the tech giant is using AI creatively to fight climate change. Projects like Google DeepMind’s AI model, trained to improve wind energy forecasts, show AI’s potential to boost renewable energy efficiency. Similarly, AI-driven suggestions on Google Maps for fuel-efficient routes show the company’s commitment to technological progress and environmental care.

OnePlus has announced that it will be hosting a “Summer Launch Event” on July 16 in Milan, Italy. At the event, the Chinese smartphone brand is expected to unveil the Nord 4 5G smartphone, Pad Pro tablet, and a new variant of the OnePlus Watch 2 smart watch. For context, OnePlus recently launched the Ace 3 Pro smartphone and Pad Pro tablet in its home country. The latter is expected to launch globally on July 16, along with the Nord 4 5G and ecosystem products such as the refreshed model of the Watch 2.

“Some say it’s impossible in the 5G era to make a smartphone with the strength, sophistication and enduring quality of metal. We say…Never Settle,” said OnePlus in a post on X announcing the launch event date.

Cloud resources biggest targets for cyberattacks in India, shows study

Cloud resources biggest targets for cyberattacks in India, shows study

“As a result, protecting cloud environments has risen as the top security priority ahead of all other security disciplines,” the statement said | Photo: Bloomberg

A study by a multinational firm has identified cloud resources as the “biggest targets” for cyberattacks in India.

Thales has announced the release of the 2024 Thales Cloud Security Study, its annual assessment of the latest cloud security threats, trends and emerging risks based on a survey of nearly 3,000 IT and security professionals across 18 countries in 37 industries, according to a statement.

“The study was based on a global survey of 2,961 respondents, aimed at professionals in security and IT management,” it said.

The study “identifies cloud resources as the biggest targets for cyberattacks in India”.

Cloud security spending now “tops all other security spending categories”, it added.

In India, nearly half (46 per cent) of the respondents reported that all corporate data stored in the cloud is sensitive and 37 per cent of the participating organisations have experienced a cloud data breach in India with 14 per cent having had one in the past year, the statement said.

Also, 35 per cent of the organisations in India recognise the importance of digital sovereignty initiatives as a means of future-proofing their cloud environments, and globally, nearly half of the organisations acknowledge that it is more difficult to manage compliance and privacy in the cloud versus on-premises, it said.

Human error and misconfiguration continue to top the list of root causes of these breaches (34 per cent), followed by exploiting previously unknown vulnerabilities (32 per cent), exploiting known vulnerabilities (21 per cent) and failure to use multi-factor authentication (11 per cent), it said.

“As the use of the cloud continues to be strategically vital to many organisations, cloud resources have become the biggest targets for cyber attacks, with cloud storage (30 per cent), SaaS applications (30 per cent) and Cloud Management Infrastructure (28 per cent) cited as the leading categories of attack in India.

“As a result, protecting cloud environments has risen as the top security priority ahead of all other security disciplines,” the statement said.
