Open AI to support app development initiative under India's AI mission

ChatGPT parent company OpenAI has committed its support to the India AI Mission through participation in the app development initiative under the programme, said a senior company executive on Wednesday.

“OpenAI is committed to supporting the India AI Mission’s application development initiative to ensure that Indian developers can build on our models and deliver social benefit at scale, and we really look forward to continuing the conversation with the ministry and gauging where we might be able to add the most value,” said Srinivas Narayanan, vice-president, OpenAI.

Identified as one of the seven pillars of the India AI Mission, the application development initiative is aimed at promoting AI applications in critical sectors by addressing problem statements from central ministries, state departments, and other institutions.

Speaking at the Global India AI Summit in Delhi, Narayanan said that the firm was keeping India in mind while making important decisions in the large language models (LLM) space.

Talking about the development of AI in India, Narayanan said that the technology has added speed and dynamism to the already dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem in India.

“Entrepreneurs understand market gaps, they are building innovative products, and tools like ChatGPT are helping them accelerate this in completely new ways. We’re reducing the cost of artificial intelligence, we’re enabling developers to write code, and we are helping them create completely conversational and natural interfaces to computing,” he added.

Narayanan also said that cost and language were the two most important factors for the company in India.

“A couple of things specific to the India context – language is obviously on top of the mind for us and cost. So, these are two pieces of feedback we’ve received from the community over the last year, and GPT-4 addresses a lot of this feedback,” he added.

He said that the company improved the tokenisation, because of which it was able to use three times fewer tokens in the latest model, for processing Indian languages.

Tokenisation is the process of breaking down a piece of information like a sentence or a paragraph into individual words or “tokens.”

These tokens are the basic building blocks of language, and tokenisation helps computers understand and process human language by splitting it into simpler units.

Nvidia exe bats for culturally aligned, multimodal AI models for India

Sewak said that his Bharat speaks more comfortably than it could write, and emphasised the need for Large multilingual models.

India needs multimodal AI models that consider diverse Indian cultures and sensitivities, moving away from western-centric models, NVIDIA executive Mohit Sewak said on Wednesday. Sewak, AI Researcher and Developer Relations, South Asia, NVIDIA, said, “This will require large-scale, multilingual datasets and synthetic data generation.”

“Indian LLMs should be multimodal with voice as an essential element,” he said while addressing the Global AI Summit.

“India has around 23 official languages, but a Bharat that I am proud to represent, speaks around 10, 500 unique dialects across 123 unique languages,” said Sewak.

“The largest model that I am aware of can deal with 100 languages,” he said.

Sewak said that his Bharat speaks more comfortably than it could write, and emphasised the need for Large multilingual models. “We are talking about tens of trillions of tokens of data across these languages if we want a real Indian LLM which can actually do the type of tasks that we expect it to do,” he said.

Underlining the importance of taking the Indian culture into consideration while building these models, Sewak said that sensitivities in Indians may be different from those of the Western world, on which most LLMs are trained. “Mere translation from one language to another does not solve the problem,” he said. “If India wants to create a foundation model for Bharat, it is not going to be one single step,” he further said.

“We are now in an iterative cycle. We’re not talking about one foundation model for India, but a series of hierarchically more complex, more sophisticated foundation models for India,” Sewak noted.

He said that it is important to ensure alignment of cultural diversity in India, and Indian sensitivities, with Indian LLMs. “Most LLMs are trained on Western culture and preferences,” he said, adding that it is important to use Bharat-specific data to train Indian LLMs.

“Relying on collected data not enough, building synthetic data is the need of the hour,” he emphasised. “Research has proved that for LLMs and Large foundation models, you can generate very good quality synthetic data that could be used to train them optimally,” he said.

Speaking about the threat of LLMs taking away employment, Sewak said scaling of LLMs is imminent and unstoppable. “Trying to stop the revolution will prove more dangerous to human jobs than finding out alternative opportunities that these trends lay before you,” he said.

“One should use the demographic dividend to open up new streams where India can scale,” he added.

India-based crypto exchange CoinDCX has acquired Middle East-focused crypto platform BitOasis, the two companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The firms did not disclose the transaction value, but BitOasis said in a separate statement that CoinDCX, which had already acquired a stake in the business last year, now owns the full share capital of the Dubai-based company.

BitOasis added that the brand and leadership team would remain unchanged following the deal, which is set to help the firm strengthen its position in the region – where it serves 15 countries – and enhance its services.

The United Arab Emirates is aiming to become a global centre for the crypto industry and Dubai, considered the Gulf’s tourism and business hub, set up watchdog VARA in 2022 to regulate the emerging virtual asset sector.

Founded in 2016, BitOasis provides broker-dealer services to qualified retail and institutional investors under its minimum viable product (MVP) operational licence provided by VARA. It recently obtained a similar licence from the Central Bank of Bahrain.
