Google introduced a suite of new artificial intelligence (AI) features with the Pixel 9 series launch. These new features include the Pixel Screenshot app, Pixel Studio for image generation, enhanced Magic Editor tools, and more. Google also announced that the Pixel 9 smartphones will be the first Android devices to feature Satellite SOS functionality. These AI features will be available on the Pixel 9 smartphones, alongside those released last year with the Pixel 8 series.


Google Pixel 9: New AI Features


Pixel Screenshots


Google unveiled the Pixel Screenshots app, exclusive to the Pixel 9, designed to help users save, organise, and recall information from saved screenshots. The app analyses screenshots taken by the user and makes them searchable within the app. It also saves the link to the website from which the screenshot was taken for quick navigation, if needed. This feature is similar to Microsoft’s Recall, introduced with the Copilot+ PC platform, but unlike Recall, Pixel Screenshots only analyses screenshots taken by the user.


Pixel Studio

The Pixel 9 introduces the Pixel Studio app, powered by an on-device diffusion model and the cloud-based Imagen 3 text-to-image model. The app allows users to generate images based on text prompts and provides options to edit images by adding or removing elements. This feature is similar to Apple’s recently announced Image Playground app, part of its Apple Intelligence suite.

Gemini Live


Google announced that Gemini Live, the conversation AI assistant powered by Gemini, will be available to all Gemini Advanced subscribers. Google is bundling the Pixel 9 Pro with Gemini Advanced for a year at no additional cost. First introduced at Google I/O earlier this year, Gemini Live allows users to engage in a free-flowing conversation with the Gemini AI assistant, including actions like interrupting the AI mid-sentence and pausing conversations to resume later. This feature is comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice with GPT-4o.


New Weather app


With the Pixel 9, Google introduced a new Weather app featuring a redesigned interface and enhanced functionality. The app displays information in a customisable tile-like format and provides an AI-generated summary of weather forecasts using the Gemini Nano model.


Add Me in Magic Editor


The Magic Editor on the Pixel 9 series is getting a new “Add Me” feature for group photos. This feature allows users to take a group picture and then overlay themselves by taking a second shot at the same location, eliminating the need for a tripod or asking strangers to take a group photo.


Image editing features


In addition to the “Add Me” feature, the Magic Editor on the Pixel 9 series is gaining more image editing tools. The Auto Frame tool lets users reframe a picture for better composition, while the Reimagine feature allows users to transform elements of an image by writing a text prompt, such as changing the sky or any other aspect of the background.


Call Notes


The new Call Notes feature on the Pixel 9 provides users with a summary of the conversation and a full transcript after they hang up. This feature processes data on-device for privacy, helping users keep track of important information without needing to write it down.


Satellite SOS


Google Pixel 9 devices are the first Android smartphones to include Satellite SOS functionality, allowing users to contact emergency services through satellite connectivity in areas with no network reception. The feature also enables users to share their location via satellite and is currently limited to the US. Apple offers a similar functionality for emergency services via satellite.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 review: Familiar design meets enhanced software



Samsung’s new book-style foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, feels like a more polished version of its predecessor, thanks to minor design adjustments. On the software side, however, there have been significant changes to enhance the user experience, particularly with features tailored to the unique foldable form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be among the best foldable smartphones based solely on its software. However, a smartphone’s overall performance is judged on the sum of its specifications. How does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 fare as a complete package? Let us find out:


Design


The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 retains much of the overall appearance of its predecessor, with only minor design adjustments. A notable change is the boxier, more squared-off frame. The Fold 6 is slightly shorter in height and a bit wider, which should, at least on paper, improve the user experience on the cover display. Additionally, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is slimmer and lighter than its predecessor.


Having transitioned from an iPhone 15 to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 as my primary device, I found the switch to the foldable form factor less than seamless. The device is thicker and heavier, but I acclimated to it within a few days. The Z Fold 6 does feel bulkier compared to a traditional smartphone; however, the in-hand experience is solid. Despite its sharp edges and box-like design, the device is comfortable to hold, even during extended use. The weight distribution is balanced across both form factors, making it easy to operate with one hand, even when unfolded.


The hinge, though requiring some effort to unfold, feels sturdy and durable. It allows the Z Fold 6 to fold completely flat, eliminating any noticeable “V” gap when closed. However, a small rectangular inlet between the hinge and the rubber bracket can collect some dust on the foldable inner screen when the device is closed. After a month of use, I also noticed slight wear on the plastic brackets flanking the large flexible display, particularly in areas that come into contact with my palms when using the phone in its unfolded state.


Display and Audio


The cover display, a 6.3-inch AMOLED panel, requires some adjustment for those transitioning from a traditional smartphone. Although Samsung claims it is wider than its predecessor, it still feels relatively narrow, particularly when reading or viewing images. However, this may not be a significant concern, as I primarily used this display for checking messages, switching music tracks, and other quick tasks. For its intended purpose, the cover screen delivers a decent HD+ resolution, providing vibrant colours and smooth performance at 120Hz.


The 7.6-inch foldable display, with a QXGA+ resolution, is ideal for watching videos, reading, and even playing select games optimised for its aspect ratio. While both displays support HDR, the larger inner screen is better suited for content consumption, delivering crisper visuals with excellent colour balance and vibrancy. Additionally, multitasking on the main display in a split-screen setup feels intuitive and practical, especially for note-taking while reading. Most apps are well-optimised for the inner display’s aspect ratio, although there are instances where you might find yourself switching between the cover and main displays to find the right fit.


Thanks to the 120Hz support on the larger display, the scrolling experience is smooth and responsive, despite the screen’s size. As for the crease, it is noticeable from certain angles, but it did not significantly detract from my experience during the review, even as a first-time foldable user.


In terms of audio performance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 impresses with its stereo speaker system. The speakers produce clear and crisp sound with a satisfying thumping effect, making it an excellent choice for watching movies. They also perform well for music playback in a closed room, with sufficient peak volume for indoor use, maintaining consistency across the volume range. The only drawback I encountered was the placement of the speakers. When using the primary display in landscape orientation with the rear camera module facing up—my preferred setup for watching videos and gaming—my palm inadvertently covered both speaker vents, resulting in muffled sound. This issue can be easily remedied by flipping the phone around, though it does require some adjustment.


During voice calls, I experienced no issues with audio quality; however, the inability to answer calls without switching to speaker mode from the main display can be somewhat inconvenient.


Camera


The camera setup on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 presents a mixed performance. The smartphone features a 50MP primary camera complemented by a 12MP ultra-wide and a 10MP telephoto lens. The primary camera excels at delivering clear and vibrant images with excellent contrast in nearly all lighting conditions. However, performance drops noticeably with the other sensors. The 12MP ultra-wide camera generally maintains consistent colour reproduction, though there are instances where images may appear overexposed in bright conditions. While it captures decent images, they lack the clarity of those from the primary sensor.


The 10MP telephoto lens, offering 3x optical zoom, maintains good colour accuracy and dynamic range, but images can be somewhat grainy, even in broad daylight. In low-light situations, both the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras struggle with clarity, further diminishing their effectiveness.


For selfies, users have multiple options. The device includes two front-facing cameras: a 10MP camera on the cover display and a 4MP camera on the inner main display. The 4MP camera is primarily suitable for video calls, while the 10MP camera captures decent selfies in good lighting conditions. However, a notable advantage is the ability to use the rear cameras for selfies, utilising the cover screen as a preview. This allows for even more versatility, as users can also leverage the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras for self-portraits.


When it comes to videography, the Z Fold 6 allows for 8K video recording at 30 frames per second using the rear camera system, although the 60 fps option is limited to UHD quality. For the front-facing cameras, the 10MP cover camera can shoot up to UHD quality at 60 fps, while the 4MP camera on the main screen is restricted to FHD quality at 60 fps. Additional advanced video options include recording high-bitrate videos, HDR10+ videos, and the choice between zoom-in mic and 360 audio recording. However, it is worth noting that while most of these features are available for both front-facing cameras, HDR10+ recording is not supported on the camera located on the foldable screen.


Performance and Battery


The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, paired with 12GB RAM, providing ample performance for managing daily tasks as well as additional workloads. Multitasking is seamless, and you can comfortably play demanding smartphone games without any issues. I particularly enjoyed playing FC Mobile on the main display, which is well-optimised for this form factor. Even at Ultra graphic settings, I experienced no noticeable lag or stutter, and the device remained cool during extended gameplay sessions.


However, while the Z Fold 6 generally manages thermals well during gaming, there are occasions when it can get quite warm. During my camera testing, for instance, continuous shooting in direct sunlight for about 15 minutes caused the smartphone to heat up significantly, leading to a quick drop in battery percentage. Although I did not encounter this issue again, it is worth noting that the device can become warm if the camera is used for longer durations.


Regarding battery performance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 4,400 mAh battery can either last through the day or leave you needing a charge, depending on which display you use most. If you primarily rely on the cover display, the smartphone can last a full day with some battery life to spare. However, battery drain is noticeably faster when using the inner display. The support for 25W charging is somewhat disappointing, especially given the phone’s premium price point; it takes nearly an hour and a half to fully charge from 10 per cent.


Software


The Galaxy Z Fold 6 comes with support for the standard suite of Galaxy AI features, including Call Assist, Live Translate, and Note Assist. However, it also introduces some new, enjoyable generative AI features.


One standout feature is the “Photo Ambient Wallpaper,” which adds dynamic effects to your static lock screen images. When activated, this feature automatically applies effects to your lock screen image based on the time of day and current weather conditions. For example, you might see animations for rain, a brighter tone during sunny weather, or a darker hue at night.


Another intriguing addition is the “Sketch to Image” feature, accessible from the side panel. This tool opens up an empty canvas where you can draw anything you like and then generate an image based on your sketch in various styles such as Pop Art, Sketch, and Illustration. The system does a commendable job of understanding facial structures and creating images based on them. However, it is less effective when it comes to generating sceneries.


This sketch-to-image functionality is also integrated into the Gallery app, allowing you to draw over an image and ask the AI to add elements to the picture accordingly.


Additionally, Samsung has introduced a “Portrait Studio” effect in the Gallery, which works in the opposite way. With this feature, you can select a face from an image and transform it into a comic character, 3D cartoon, or sketch.

The HONOR 200 Pro is a premium smartphone, boasting sleek design, vibrant display, swift performance, advanced imaging capabilities, and artificial intelligence-powered tools for photo enhancements and file sharing. The smartphone ticks all the right boxes, especially with regard to premium experience, yet could find itself catching up with competition simply because other brands have been there long before HONOR’s entry and users resonate with many of these brands. That said, here is how the experience has been with the HONOR 200 Pro:


Design


The HONOR 200 Pro features a sleek design with a glass front and back, complemented by an aluminium frame. The glass back has a premium feel with a smooth finish that resists fingerprints. Despite its large size, the phone is lightweight and comfortable to hold. The quad-curved floating screen and smooth edges enhance its ergonomic appeal. The power and volume buttons are on the right side of the handset, while the bottom houses the USB-C port, speaker grille, and SIM tray. An IR emitter and another speaker grille are located at the top. The rear camera sensors are housed in a protruding oval frame on the right side. Overall, the design is ergonomically convenient.


Display


The HONOR 200 Pro sports a 6.78-inch OLED display, making it ideal for media consumption. It supports a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring smooth scrolling and a responsive touch experience. The FHD+ panel, though not sharp, is good enough for movie watching and gaming. The adaptive brightness feature works well, adjusting display brightness based on ambient lighting conditions. Text appears crisp, and fine details in images and videos are easily readable.


Battery and Performance


The HONOR 200 Pro is powered by a 5,200mAh battery, which lasts a full day with moderate use. It supports 100W wired and 66W wireless charging, though no charger is included in the box. The charging is quick, and the device gets fully charged within an hour with a supported charger.


Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, the HONOR 200 Pro delivers smooth performance. The processor handles multitasking with ease, and app switching is swift with immediate touch response. With 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, there is no dearth of memory and storage here.


Software


Running on Android 14-based MagicOS 8.0, the HONOR 200 Pro provides a smooth and intuitive user experience. While it comes with some pre-installed apps, the experience is on the cleaner side compared to bloatware packed interfaces from its peers such as Realme, OPPO, and more. The UI offers extensive customisation options, allowing users to tweak themes, icons, and layouts to their preference.


Camera


The HONOR 200 Pro’s camera system is a standout feature. The smartphone has a versatile triple-camera setup on the rear, enhanced by AI. HONOR has collaborated with Paris-based Studio Harcourt for colour optimisation, especially for portrait shots.


The 50MP primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) delivers sharp and detailed photos in well-lit conditions. Colours are vibrant but not overly saturated, maintaining a natural look. The dynamic range is impressive, with well-balanced highlights and shadows. The HONOR 200 Pro performs decently in low light, and Night Portrait Mode further improves results.


The ultra-wide lens produces images with good colour consistency, though some distortion at the edges is typical for ultra-wide lenses. The telephoto camera, featuring a Sony IMX856 sensor, offers 2.5x optical zoom and up to 50x digital zoom, maintaining good detail and colour consistency. However, quality degrades at higher zoom levels.


The 50MP selfie camera, accompanied by a 2MP depth sensor, captures clear images and handles different lighting conditions well. The front camera also supports portrait mode with AI-generated bokeh effects. The edge detection is generally accurate, and the background blur looks natural, adding a professional touch to photos.


The HONOR 200 Pro can record video at up to 4K resolution at 60fps with the primary camera, though 30fps is the limit when AI enhancements are enabled. Video quality suffers in poor light, which is an area for improvement. The phone also offers noise reduction during recording when the AI option is turned on.


Audio


The HONOR 200 Pro is equipped with stereo speakers that deliver a balanced sound experience. The audio output is crisp and clear, even at higher volumes, with well-represented mids and highs. However, the 3.5mm headphone jack is absent.


Verdict


Priced at Rs 57,999, the HONOR 200 Pro stands out as a high-end smartphone with a balance of design, performance, and features. However, given the competitive market, the HONOR 200 Pro appears expensive, especially when compared to other flagship models offering similar features at a lower price point. While the HONOR 200 Pro is appealing, it will find itself catching up with competition in India’s lucrative premium smartphone market.

In terms of connectivity, the Chromebook Plus 14 and 15 support Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Acer has stated that all models are equipped with a discrete H1 Trusted Platform Module (TPM) solution, camera shutters for privacy, and Kensington lock slots for physical security.


The Chromebook Plus 14 features a 14-inch FHD IPS display, while the Chromebook Plus 15 comes with a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display. The laptops offer built-in Google apps and AI capabilities, including Google Photos Magic Eraser, File Syncing, and Adobe Photoshop on the web.

Apple is set for a big year in 2024, beginning with the anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 series in September. Additionally, Apple is expected to launch new Mac models later this year, including the M4 chip-powered MacBook Pro. Here is a rundown of all the devices Apple is anticipated to launch in 2024:


iPhone 16 series


Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series is expected to bring significant upgrades. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models are likely to feature slightly larger displays than their predecessors and an improved ultra-wide angle camera. The 5x zoom-capable telephoto camera, previously exclusive to the Pro Max variant, is expected to be standard across both models this year. The standard iPhone 16 models are also expected to sport a new rear camera layout with a vertical alignment. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models are anticipated to replace the Mute Switch with an Action Button.


All iPhone 16 models are expected to receive a performance boost, with all four models likely to feature the new A18 chip. Apple has traditionally used last-generation flagship chips for its standard models, but this could change this year. While all four iPhone 16 models are expected to use the A18 chip, the Pro models may still differentiate themselves by incorporating additional Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) cores.


The iPhone 16 series could also introduce a new physical button for controlling camera actions. However, it is unclear whether this feature will be exclusive to the Pro models or available across the entire range.


Apple Watch Series 10


The Apple Watch Series 10 is expected to see a significant size upgrade compared to the previous generation. Apple is likely to launch the next-generation Apple Watch SE in 2024. Reports suggest that the 2024 model could feature a rigid plastic body, reducing manufacturing costs and potentially making it more accessible.


AirPods 4


According to a report by 9To5Mac, Apple could release two variants of the AirPods 4: a standard, more affordable version and a premium option. iPads


After updating the iPad Pro and iPad Air earlier this year, Apple is expected to release new iPad Mini and standard iPad models by the end of 2024. While not many changes are anticipated for these models, both the iPad Mini and the 11th generation iPad are expected to feature new processors. Reports suggest that the iPad Mini could even be powered by an M-series chip this year.
