WhatsApp tests status update makeover in Android beta version: What is new

WhatsApp could redesign the status update section on the Android app to make it easier for users to preview status without losing the option to view profile pictures of the contact that has posted it. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform has been working on revamping the design interface for the status update tray, but this is the first time the layout and other design elements have been available on the beta release. The redesigned status update section interface is rolling out to a few beta testers on the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android and is expected to expand to more users in the upcoming days.

According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the status preview option is shown as a thumbnail on the right side of the screen for users who follow channels. There is a vertical list for status updates for users who do not follow any channel. In the vertical section, there is a redesigned thumbnail for profile photos and the status preview.

Previously, the profile photo would disappear and only status would be visible. This new feature will place the thumbnail next to profile photo and allow users to easily look at the contacts and browse updates.

Meta-owned WhatsApp has been trying to offer improved features to users. Recently, WhatsApp introduced a feature to let users set HD quality as default for sending photos and videos through chats. The feature has started rolling out to both iOS and Android users. Users can choose to send high resolution photos and videos by going to WhatsApp’s settings on their device, selecting ‘Storage and Data’ and selecting ‘HD quality’ as media upload quality. Additionally, WhatsApp also introduced a feature called “Calling Update”. The update includes support for screen sharing with audio, increased participants for video calls across devices and, putting spotlight on the speaker.

Google rolls out Gemini AI in side panel for Gmail and other workspace apps

Google rolls out Gemini AI in side panel for Gmail and other workspace apps

Gemini on the Gmail side Panel

Google has started rolling out Gemini AI in the side panel of workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, as announced during the I/O developers conference in May. The US-based software giant has made the Gemini AI available on the side panel on Gmail for web, too.

Google said that leveraging Gemini in side panel, users can summarise, analyse and generate content based on insights from emails, documents and more without having to switch apps or tabs. Additionally, the side panel will use Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro model with a larger context window and improved reasoning.

Google said that the change will be available to Google Workspace customers with Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, or Google One AI Premium subscription. The new features are now rolling out gradually and will be available to all customers by July 8.

Here is everything new coming to Google Workspace:

Gemini side panel in Google Workspace apps

Docs: Google said that Gemini in Docs side panel will help users write and refine their content. Additionally, it will assist users to summarise information and create based off files and more.

Slides: Gemini in the side panel for Slides will be able to generate new slides, generate custom images, summarise presentation and more.

Sheets: Google said that the Gemini powered side panel on Sheets will help users track and organise data. It will be capable of creating tables and generating formulas to carry out specific tasks.

Drive: Utilising Gemini on the side panel, users will be able to summarise multiple documents at once from their Google Drive. Gemini will assist them to get quick facts and information from stored documents and files without having to click on every individual item.

Gemini side panel in Gmail on web

Leveraging Gemini on the side panel for Gmail, users can ask the AI assistant to summarise an email thread, suggest responses, draft an email or even ask questions to find specific information from emails within your inbox or from your Google Drive files.

While Gemini in Gmail offers assistance within the platform, it also draws information from other Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive.

Gemini on Gmail app for Android and iOS

Google is also rolling out Gemini in side panel-like features to the Gmail app for Android and iOS. The company said that with the new update, users will be able to analyse email threads and see a summarised view with the key highlights, just as with the side panel on the web version. The changes in the app have also started rolling out and will be available to all eligible end users in the coming days.

Apple blocks OS emulators on iPhones, but allows gaming emulators: Report

Apple blocks OS emulators on iPhones, but allows gaming emulators: Report

Delta Game emulator on iPhone

Apple allows retro gaming console emulator applications on iPhones through the App Store, but the US-based technology giant is denying the same to operating system emulators. According to a report by The Verge, Apple has rejected App Store submissions of iDOS 3, which emulates disk operating systems (DOS) like MS-DOS, and UTM SE, that lets users emulate operating systems like Windows 10, Windows 11, and more on iOS. According to the report Apple said that these apps violate guidelines of the App Store.

Earlier this year Apple updated its guidelines that allowed retro game console emulators, mini games and HTML5 mini apps on iPhones under guideline 4.7.

In a statement to The Verge, Chaoji Li, the developer of iDOS 3 said that their app offers emulation but it is not emulating a retro gaming console and according to the Apple App Review Guideline, the company will only allow retro game console emulators on iPhones. Li said that he asked Apple about the changes in the app required to be compliant, but the company “had no idea”.

Similarly UTM, the developer of UTM SE app posted on X stating that the Apple’s App Store Review board “determined  that ‘PC is not a console’ regardless of the fact that there are retro Windows / DOS games for the PC that UTM SE can be useful in running.” The developer also stated that Apple is not letting UTM SE on third party app marketplaces either as the guideline 4.7 is applicable to Notarization Review Guidelines too.

Apple, earlier this year, announced compatibility for alternative marketplaces for app distribution on Apple’s iPhone operating system – iOS in the European Union to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). However, the change has faced backlash from multiple app developers including Microsoft’s Xbox, Spotify and more for the notarization requirements. This essentially means that the apps will be required to go through the same security check that other iOS apps go through.
