Motorola is set to unveil its next generation flip-style foldable smartphones, Motorola Razr 50 series, on June 25. Although the company has not specified a schedule for the India launch, the product category page – featuring Motorola Razr 50 Ultra features – is now live on the e-commerce platform Amazon India. It could be an indication that the top-end model in the series could launch in India soon after the global unveiling on June 25.

The smartphone brand, owned by China’s Lenovo, would likely name the smartphones Motorola Razr and Razr Plus in its home country and the Motorola Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra in other regions, including India.

Motorola Razr 50 series: What to expect

Although the product category page of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra smartphone on Amazon India does not offer details about the specification of the upcoming foldable, it mentions “moto AI” artificial intelligence features that would be available on the smartphone. These include camera optimisation features such as Intelligent Auto Focus Tracking, Adaptive Stabilization, Photo Enhancement Pro and more. Additionally, the page mentions AI Magic Canvas feature that allows users to generate images via text prompts. These features are already available on select Motorola Edge 50 series smartphones including the newly launched Edge 50 Ultra.

It was reported last week that the top-end model in the Razr 50 series would bring major upgrades with regard to durability and cameras. While the smartphone would likely retain the 12-megapixel primary camera from its predecessor, it may get a telephoto camera with zooming capabilities at the hardware level. However, it is unknown if the telephoto camera will be incorporated at the cost of the 13MP ultra-wide angle camera that currently rounds off the dual camera set up on the smartphone.

The Ultra model might get better resistance against water ingress as well. The smartphone will reportedly get an IPX8 rating, instead of the IP52 rating that is applicable on the current generation model. If true, this might be useful to some users as although the smartphone loses out on resistance against dust, it will offer more protection against water.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE could join Watch 7 series on July 10: Report

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE could join Watch 7 series on July 10: Report

South Korean electronics maker Samsung could be working on the Ultra model in the smartwatch line-up. Reportedly, a smartwatch appeared on Samsung’s official website with the name “Galaxy Watch Ultra” alongside an LTE model. The name of the watch was spotted by India’s consumer technology news platform 91mobiles on a support page published briefly on Samsung Canada website. Besides the name, reportedly, the support page had details about the size (47mm) of the watch and connectivity (LTE), too.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is expected to feature a fresh design and pack a bigger battery. Rumour also suggests that the watch will sport a circular dial in a square case. It is expected that Samsung will offer the Galaxy Watch Ultra in white and dark gray colour options, both with a vibrant orange side button.

The orange accented button corroborates with previous leaks, which stated that the watch will feature an orange crown on the right situated along with two other buttons. According to the leaks, the watch will have a premium build design with grade-4 titanium chassis and sapphire crystal glass display. The watch is also expected to have a peak brightness of up to 300 nits and water resistance up to 100 metres.

The revealed details suggest that the watch will be available in only one size, as opposed to Galaxy Watch 6 Classic which is available in two sizes.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is anticipated to launch at the next Samsung Unpacked event, which is expected to take place in Paris on July 10. Other Samsung devices expected at the next unpacked event are the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Buds 3 series, Galaxy Watch 7 series, and Galaxy Ring.

Microsoft is rolling out a new feature that will allow Android smartphone users to connect and access their smartphones directly from the Start menu on their Windows 11 PCs. With this feature, users will be able to view their phone’s battery and connectivity status from the Start menu and even access phone messages, calls and photos.

Microsoft in its recent update on Windows Insider Blog said that the feature is gradually rolling out to the select users who have enrolled into the Windows Insider community. While the feature is currently compatible only with Android smartphones, the company said that iOS support for it will be coming at a later date.

Phone Link on Start menu: How to set up

Tech layoffs: 98,000 impacted as Apple, Google, others continue job cuts

Tech layoffs: 98,000 impacted as Apple, Google, others continue job cuts

The tech industry is experiencing a significant wave of job cuts, with more than 98,000 employees laid off from over 330 companies globally in the first half of 2024. Layoffs.fyi, a platform monitoring tech layoffs, reported that 98,834 employees have been affected.

Prominent companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are among the 333 companies implementing these job cuts.

Economic uncertainties continue to impact the tech sector’s workforce. In May alone, 39 companies laid off a total of 9,742 employees, as reported earlier this month by layoffs.fyi.

Tech giants on a layoff spree

Google, for instance, let go nearly 200 employees from its core teams in May, primarily affecting engineering positions in Sunnyvale, California. This move, the company said, is part of Alphabet’s broader downsizing plan, announced last year, aiming to reduce its workforce by about 6 per cent.

Microsoft also made significant cuts earlier this month, laying off over 1,000 employees across various divisions, including the Azure cloud and mixed reality units. Most of these layoffs were within the Strategic Missions and Technologies organisation, which focuses on selling cloud software and server rentals to specialised businesses like telecom firms and space companies.

Additionally, Microsoft eliminated 1,900 jobs from its gaming division following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and the company has seen several executive departures as it restructures.

Job-search platform Indeed laid off approximately 8 per cent of its workforce in May 2024, primarily affecting employees in the United States. This was the second round of layoffs in the company which impacted research and development units, among other teams responsible for delivering products to customers.

Meanwhile, Toshiba announced plans to cut 4,000 domestic jobs as part of its restructuring efforts, amounting to 6 per cent of its local workforce. The company reportedly has plans to move some office functions from central Tokyo to Kawasaki, a city west of the capital.

TikTok, the popular short-video platform, has laid off over 1,000 employees globally, impacting operations and marketing teams. Although TikTok has provided limited official explanations, industry analysts speculate that the layoffs may be a cost-cutting measure in response to the fluctuating regulatory environment affecting social media giants.

Amazon’s layoffs spanned various units, including Audible (5 per cent), Prime Video, Twitch (35 per cent or roughly 500 employees), and Buy with Prime teams. Meanwhile, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, recently laid off a small portion of its workforce as part of restructuring its Reality Lab, responsible for AR/VR headsets, software, and other metaverse projects.

Indian tech ecosystem handing pink slips

In India, Fintech firm One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, confirmed the layoff of an undisclosed number of employees on June 10. The Paytm sales division was reduced by nearly 3,500 employees, bringing the total headcount to 36,521 by the end of the March 2024 quarter, as reported by PTI.

ReshaMandi, a B2B marketplace specialising in silk products, laid off 80 per cent of its employees after failing to secure Series B funding. Retail and food delivery giants like eBay, Flipkart, and Swiggy have also made job cuts to realign their priorities. Other Indian companies facing layoffs include Ola and Byju’s.

Soon, only premium subscribers will be allowed to live stream on X: Details

Soon, only premium subscribers will be allowed to live stream on X: Details

X has announced that only premium subscribers will be allowed to livestream on the platform. The official (at)Live profile confirmed the news on X. The date for implementation of this change is not yet confirmed, but the post states that live streaming will not be available for free users on X. Live streaming, through an encoder platform integrated with X, will also not be allowed for non-premium subscribers.

“Starting soon, only Premium subscribers will be able to livestream (create live video streams) on X. This includes going live from an encoder with X integration. Upgrade to Premium to continue going live.” says the tweet from @Live.

Twitter Blue subscription for web costs Rs 650 per month whereas it costs Rs 900 on iPhones and Android smartphones per month. With purchase of X Premium, users also get access to blue checkmark, creator subscriptions, larger posts and have to see less ads in the timeline.

Elon Musk’s X has been trying to come up with ways to increase their revenue and this is one more step in that direction. Elon Musk had also suggested earlier that a small fee should be charged to let new accounts post on X in order to avoid spam and bots. This move arrives days after Likes were made private on the platform.

X started making likes on posts private in a bid to drive user engagement on the platform. Limited to premium subscribers before, the feature is now being rolled out widely and it will arrive to everyone with an account on the platform. Touted by the platform as a measure to boost users’ privacy, private likes will hide the identity of the users that have liked a post. Users can follow accounts of others and read posts without paying.

Live streaming is free on rivalling social media platforms, including Instagram and YouTube.
