Samsung has enabled its Galaxy AI-powered “Live Translate” feature on select third-party messaging apps, including Meta’s instant messaging platform WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Telegram. In July, Samsung announced that the Live Translate feature will soon work with third-party apps for voice calls. The feature has been available on Samsung’s native calling app but is now getting support for other apps as well.


Samsung’s Live Translate offers translations between languages for messages and calls in real time. The feature works through on-device processing and Samsung has said that user data is stored locally on the device and not sent through the server. At the time of announcement, Samsung confirmed that the entire processing of real-time call translation for third-party apps will also take place on-device for user’s privacy.


“Since this feature has been integrated into our on-device AI language translation model, users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about privacy issues like personal data being shared outside their phone when using Live Translate,” said Samsung’s EVP and head of Mobile research and development, Won-Joon Choi in his editorial note published on Samsung newsroom.


Samsung’s Live Translate support


While Samsung has not officially revealed the list of apps that support the Live Translate, the feature is available for WhatsApp, Telegram and Google Meet. The AI-powered live translation feature currently does not support Cisco’s Webex and Zoom, however, it could expand to more third-party applications in the future.


It should also be noted that third-party apps are getting the support for Live Translate only on select Samsung devices that support Galaxy AI. These devices include the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 Series, Z Fold 5, Z Fold 6, Z Flip 5, Z Flip 6, Galaxy Tab S9 series, and more.


How to enable Live Translate for third-party apps


  • Go to Settings on an eligible Samsung device


  • Tap on “Galaxy AI” and select the “Call Assist” option


  • Scroll down to the “Live Translate in other apps” option


  • You will see a list of available apps that support the Live Translate feature


  • Enable the preferred apps


While on a call through the app, tap on the “Live Translate” option in the quick panel to kick off the feature.

The Nothing Phone 2a Plus is now available for purchase in India. The mid-range smartphone from UK-based consumer technology brand is available on e-commerce platform Flipkart and select retail stores such as Croma and Vijay Sales. Based on the Nothing Phone 2a, which debuted earlier this year, the plus model brings performance improvement with the new MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro chip, new 50MP front facing camera sensor, and some changes in design. While the overall design of the Nothing Phone 2a Plus is identical to that of the standard model, there are subtle changes. The Phone 2a Plus does not have coloured accents underneath the transparent back panel. Additionally, the smartphone features elements underneath with metallic finish.


Besides some cosmetic changes, there is a new processor on-board – MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G – which Nothing said brings performance improvements, especially with regard to graphics. The Phone 2a Plus also features a new 50MP front facing camera sensor. While the battery capacity of 5000mAh on the Plus model remains the same as the Phone 2a, there is now support for faster 50W wired charging.

Garmin has revamped its Connect IQ store, enabling support for in-store payment with Garmin Pay and access to more third-party apps and watch faces. For context, Connect IQ is the app platform for Garmin smartwatches, bike computers, and outdoor handhelds. It has been available for some time, but criticised for lack of payment option for in-store purchases and limited pool of third-party apps and watch faces. A step in the right direction, the revamped store addresses one of the most criticised aspects, the lack of payment option, by integrating Garmin Pay into the store.


Previously, downloading apps from Garmin Connect IQ Store was a difficult task as it lacked a convenient way of paying for apps that were not free. Even downloading free apps was not an easy task, and the store in general lacked a variety of apps to choose from. But now it looks like Garmin is focusing on improving its app store. New watch faces


Garmin has announced that Connect IQ is getting new additions. These include four Disney watch faces, three watch faces from Porsche, and one from golf brand TaylorMade. The Disney watch faces have characters from Disney, Marvel and Star Wars. In addition, there are few space-themed watch faces as well. Garmin has said that more options will be arriving later.  


GoPro camera control app


Garmin has added a new GoPro Camera Control app with which GoPro camera can be connected to the watch and can be used to click photos and start and stop video recording.


Garmin Pay


Garmin now lets users download apps from Connect IQ Store and pay using Garmin Pay.


Recently, Google’s music streaming platform, YouTube Music, became available through Garmin’s Connect IQ Store. The store lets users download and install the YouTube Music app on eligible watches. Before this addition, Garmin allowed users to listen to music available on Amazon Music, Deezer and Spotify. With YouTube Music, users will have access to 100 million songs.

Elon Musk-led electric car brand, Tesla, has recalled 1.68 million cars in China for a remote software upgrade. The announcement, made late on Tuesday, said that vehicles with faulty trunk latches will be repaired free of charge.


The recall has been made for some imported Model S and Model X vehicles. Apart from them, Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y cars manufactured in China between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024, have also been recalled.


The recall notice, as per an Associated Press report, says that an unlocked trunk lid could open during driving, interfering with the driver’s vision. However, the notice doesn’t mention whether any Tesla car faced this issue.


The US-based electric vehicle maker will fix the problem through a remote software upgrade, said China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.


China, a major market for Tesla


China is a major market and production base for Tesla. In July, Tesla cars were even placed on a Chinese government purchase list. With this, Tesla became the only foreign-owned EV car brand on the purchase catalog published by the government of a Chinese province. The development went viral on Chinese social media, highlighting the “cozy relationship” China has with Elon Musk’s company.


Tesla has a Gigafactory in Shanghai where around 947,000 cars were manufactured in 2023. While most of these cars were used locally, Tesla also exported China-made EVs to Europe. However, the company reported a decline in net income last month as sales fell despite price cuts and low-interest financing. China’s BYD has been giving Tesla a run for its money over the past few quarters. This is concerning for Tesla, as last year the company derived nearly 25 per cent of its total revenue from China.

China’s Vivo is set to launch the V40-series smartphones in India on August 7. The series will include two models, the Vivo V40 and V40 Pro. Launch event for the Vivo V40 series will kick off at 12 pm and will be livestreamed on Vivo India’s official YouTube channel. In the run-up to the launch, Vivo has revealed several key details about the upcoming smartphones, including camera configurations, battery details, and more.


Vivo V40 Series: What to expect


According to the product listing page of the Vivo V40 series on the company’s website, the V40 Pro will sport a triple-camera setup on the back that has been co-engineered with the German optics brand Zeiss. The Pro model is expected to feature a 50-megapixel primary sensor (Sony IMX921) accompanied by a 50MP ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 50MP (Sony IMX816) telephoto camera.


The standard Vivo V40 will feature a dual-camera setup on the back, likely with the same primary and the ultra-wide angle sensors as the Pro model. The Zeiss collaboration is likely to continue on the base model as well, unlike the previous generation Vivo V30-series where the Zeiss branding was limited to the Pro model.


The company has also confirmed that the Vivo V40 series will be powered by a 5,500mAh battery and will get support for 80W fast wired charging. Vivo said that both the smartphones will feature a sleek design and a durable construction with IP68 rating for resistance against dust and water ingress.


The Vivo V40 Pro will be available in Ganges Blue and Titanium Grey colour while the standard model will get an additional Lotus Purple colour option.

US-based artificial intelligence startup OpenAI has updated the ChatGPT app for Mac to make multitasking easier than before. While the previous version worked similar to the Apple Spotlight, opening a text entry box on pressing Option + Space command on the keyboard, the updated app offers side-by-side access by opening a companion window, which stays in front along with other open apps for easier access.


“The desktop app for macOS now gives you side-by-side access to ChatGPT. Use Option + Space to open a companion window, which stays in front so you can use it more easily when working with other apps.” said the post by Open AI on X.


Previously, after pressing the Option along with the Space button on the keyboard, a text entry box appeared similar to Apple Spotlight for ChatGPT. Users can type or upload files to ChatGPT from any app in this text entry prompt. This feature allowed users to quickly access ChatGPT from the app already in use, but ChatGPT was made the primary window only once the users chose to return.


Now, pressing Option + Space combination makes the same text box appear but creates a mini ChatGPT window that appears alongside the app already in use. This mini window can be expanded to full window but is not the default window. Therefore, there will be less window switching, which is especially a hassle on smaller displays. Users can check for the new update of ChatGPT on Mac.


Recently, OpenAI confirmed that it is working on a text watermarking method for ChatGPT-generated content, after the report by Wall Street Journal. According to the US-based artificial intelligence company, its text watermarking method is accurate and “even effective against localized tampering, such as paraphrasing, it is less robust against globalized tampering.” However, the company has kept it on hold to date over concerns about stigmatisation of use of AI as a useful writing tool for non-native English speakers.
