A United Nations agency is warning that developments in artificial intelligence could spawn a new surge in Holocaust denial.


A report published on Tuesday by UNESCO concludes that AI could result in false and misleading claims about the Holocaust spreading online, either because of flaws in the programmes or because hate groups and Holocaust deniers will intentionally use AI programmes to generate content that falsely calls into question the murder of Jews and other groups by the Nazis.


One of the biggest concerns is that AI could be used to create so-called deepfakes of the Holocaust realistic images or videos that could be used to suggest the Holocaust didn’t happen or was exaggerated. That could lead to greater antisemitism and a lack of understanding of a key moment in 20th-century history. The report noted that some AI-assisted programmes allow users to interact with simulated historical figures, including prominent Nazis like Adolf Hitler.


If we allow the horrific facts of the Holocaust to be diluted, distorted or falsified through the irresponsible use of AI, we risk the explosive spread of antisemitism and the gradual diminution of our understanding about the causes and consequences of these atrocities,” Audrey Azoulay said in a statement accompanying the report.


Widespread use of AI for assistance in education, research and writing are increasing the likelihood that unreliable data and artificial intelligence hallucinations could increase public misunderstandings about the Holocaust, even inadvertent ones. AI programs whose understanding of the world is based on relatively narrow sources can also return incomplete or misleading responses when asked about the Holocaust.


UNESCO’s report called on tech companies to establish ethical rules for the development and use of AI, to reduce the chances of unreliable information and to prevent bad actors from harnessing their programs in order to encourage violence and to spread lies about the Holocaust.

Huawei Technologies Co. is considering taking a cut of in-app purchases on its Harmony mobile operating system, underscoring its growing confidence in competing with Apple Inc in the world’s largest smartphone arena. 

 


The Shenzhen-based company is weighing a commission lower than the typical 30 per cent cut that Apple and Alphabet Inc.’s Google take for payments made via their mobile stores for things like apps, games, movies and music subscriptions, according to people familiar with the matter. Huawei has kept Harmony OS fee-free until now, as an enticement to bring developers and publishers on board.


For games in particular, which account for the majority of mobile app store revenue, Huawei has been discussing a fee of about 20 per cent with developers, the people said. They asked not to be identified as the information is private. Rival Android store operators in China, such as Xiaomi Corp., charge as much as 50 per cent on in-game purchases. Huawei has not yet made a final decision and its plans could still change, according to the people.


Huawei’s imminent move suggests the Chinese tech conglomerate feels it has grown its user and developer base to the point where it can begin collecting rent. The company shifted to its in-house Harmony OS after US sanctions cut it off from working with Google, the proprietor of Android.


A company spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.


The envisioned commissions would still place Huawei’s 4-year-old Harmony ecosystem below market competitors. The company has to convince both users and app makers to embrace its third option, after Apple’s iPhone software and Google’s Android, though it has made strong progress over the past year with its return to prominence in China’s premium market.


Huawei has seen increased demand for its 5G smartphones after it released the Mate 60 Pro with an advanced China-made chip last year. Its net profit rose 564 per cent in the first quarter as it took market share from Apple and others. Its Harmony OS also overtook iOS in terms of market share in China in the January-March period, according to Counterpoint Research.

India is set to become a major player in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, as it gets investments from technology giants Microsoft and Amazon. These companies are pouring billions into computing infrastructure in India, aligning with the nation’s aspirations to be a leading AI hub, according to a report by the Financial Times (FT).


Microsoft will invest $3.7 billion in Telangana to build data centres that will provide 660 megawatts of information technology (IT) capacity – enough to power about half a million European households annually.


Amazon has announced plans to invest $12.7 billion in Cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.


Tech investments and government initiatives in India


India has rolled out incentives for tech companies to establish operations ranging from electronics manufacturing to data storage. Leveraging its rapidly growing technology market and a vast pool of skilled workers, India aims to emerge as a key consumer and exporter of AI.


Last year, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released its first “Expert Group Report” to create a vision for its IndiaAI initiative, which was launched in April 2024.


Key aspects of this initiative include strengthening computing infrastructure, improving data management through the National Data Management Office (NDMO), and fostering research, innovation, and targeted skilling.


By leveraging public-private partnerships and focusing on socially impactful AI projects, the initiative seeks to solidify India’s position as a global AI powerhouse and maximise the country’s demographic dividend.


This year alone, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have committed to investing a combined $85 billion in data center infrastructure in various countries, including India.


This is especially important as major tech companies expect AI to be a major player. Lenovo India is confident that 20 per cent of the personal computer consumer market will be powered by AI by the end of FY25. The company added that demand for AI-enabled devices has been “much higher than anticipated,” as earlier reported by Business Standard.


Puneet Chandok, Microsoft’s president for India and South Asia, also told the FT that India was “one of the most exciting markets” to work in when it came to tech.


Expanding cloud computing capacity


According to Structure Research, as reported by FT, the investments by tech giants Microsoft and Amazon is likely to propel India to the top spot for self-built data center capacity in the Asia-Pacific region, up from sixth place. If Microsoft proceeds with its plans for the new 660 MW capacity, India could become its largest market for self-built data centers outside the United States.


Other countries, including Germany and the United States, are also expected to see significant data center expansions.


Data centres and sovereign AI


Microsoft’s data centres are also crucial for India AI plans, as it would allow the country to build its sovereign AI that is crucial to ensuring data security.


The concept of “sovereign AI” has significantly increased the demand for local data centres, as governments strive to ensure that sensitive information is stored and processed within their own borders. This focus extends to developing AI systems for national defence and security, necessitating local infrastructure. Sovereign technology, which a country fully owns, including intellectual property, encompasses sovereign AI and sovereign generative AI (GenAI) capabilities. Companies such as IBM and Nvidia have publicly supported the need for countries to build sovereign AI, including GenAI capabilities.


This push from countries with rapidly growing economies has created a substantial addressable market for cloud providers like Microsoft and Amazon, FT said.


Local impact and challenges for AI expansion in India


India’s digital economy has rapidly expanded due to widespread smartphone use and affordable data. The government has attracted tech companies with substantial incentives, especially in states like Telangana. Microsoft’s research and development operations in India are the largest outside the US, with two-thirds of its 23,000 employees in the country being engineers. One in four AI projects on GitHub, Microsoft’s coding platform, is managed in India.


However, the environmental impact of data centers, which consume large amounts of electricity and water, poses a challenge. India’s power generation is still largely coal-dependent, despite significant investments in renewable energy, according to FT. Microsoft, committed to becoming carbon-negative by 2030, has signed agreements to source clean power in India from renewable energy companies.

The global commercial shipping industry could cut down its carbon emissions by 47 million tonnes per year by deploying artificial intelligence for sea navigation, a study by autonomous shipping startup Orca AI showed on Tuesday.

 


The use of the technology could reduce the need for maneuvers and route deviation from close encounters with high-risk marine targets such as vessels, buoys and sea mammals by alerting the crew in real time, according to the report.

 


WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

 


Shipping, responsible for moving about 90 per cent of global trade, contributes nearly 3 per cent to the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. This share is anticipated to rise in the coming years unless stricter pollution control measures are implemented.

 


The International Maritime Organization aims to cut emissions by 20 per cent by 2030, a target under threat from the ongoing Red Sea crisis.

Google brings Gemini app for Android to India with local language support


Google is launching its Gemini AI app for Android in India with support for nine different local languages, CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter). In addition to a dedicated app for the AI-powered chatbot, Google is also rolling-out added local language support to its Gemini Advanced, the paid-tier subscription that offers access to Google’s more capable large language models (LLMs). The Google CEO also announced that Google Messages users in India will also get the ability to chat with the Gemini AI chatbot within the Messages app. 

Google Gemini App for Android in India: What’s new


Google launched its Gemini App for Android devices back in February when it rebranded its AI-powered chatbot Bard to Gemini, but at the time of launch the app was only available in select regions, including the US. 


On Tuesday, however, Google announced that its dedicated Gemini app is coming to India with support for English as well as nine Indian languages–Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. With Gemini, users can get help for writing text messages, generate custom images, and ask for instructions to complete specific tasks.


Users can download the Gemini app directly from the Google Play Store on Android devices or can even opt-in through the existing Google Assistant app. Once available, Gemini’s assistance could be called upon by corner swiping, hitting the power button on select phones, or saying “Hey Google.” The Gemini app will also take over some of the Voice functionality that was previously available through Google Assistant such as setting timers, making calls and setting reminders.


On iOS, Google has started rolling out support for Gemini AI directly on to the Google app.


Gemini Advanced in Indian Languages: What’s New


Google is also adding support for Indian languages to its paid-tier Gemini Advanced. The Gemini Advanced subscription offers access to Google’s most capable Gemini 1.5 Pro model with a one million token context window. Leveraging the LLM with a larger context window, Gemini Advanced offers features such as document analysis and data analysis. 


Google said that users can now upload multiple large documents, up to 1,500-pages in total. Gemini Advanced can then analyse the uploaded document and provide summaries, feedback and insights. The Gemini Advanced supports uploading spreadsheet files as well for analysing and visualising data through interactive and customisable charts and graphs.
