Googles Gemini now available as an app for Android phone users in India

Google said the Gemini feature will also be added in Google Messages on select devices

Google on Tuesday said its AI assistant Gemini is now available as an app for Android smartphone users in India with support for English, Hindi and eight other Indian languages.

For iPhone users, access to Gemini will be rolled out through the Google app over the next few weeks, according to a blog post by Amar Subramanya, Vice President, Engineering, Gemini Experiences.

“Gemini, your AI assistant from Google, has had an exciting first year in India… From students to developers and many other curious minds, people in India are embracing Gemini’s capabilities to enhance their productivity, learning, and creativity in everyday life,” Subramanya wrote.

Additionally, users of Gemini Advanced in India will now be able to access features of Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google’s latest next-gen AI (Artificial Intellegence) model.

The expanded capacity of Gemini Advanced will allow users to upload multiple large documents and emails for quick summaries, feedback, and actionable insights.

“As always, privacy is a top priority. Gemini keeps your files private to you, and they’re not used to train our models,” Subramanya added.

Google said the Gemini feature will also be added in Google Messages on select devices.

The generative AI platform faced controversies earlier this year, over its “fascist Modi” responses, and anti-white bias.

In February this year, a journalist had shared a screenshot in which a question was asked to Gemini about Modi. In response, Gemini made uncharitable comments about him but was circumspect when the same query was posed about Trump and Zelenskyy.

Google had then said it worked quickly to address the issue and conceded that the chatbot “may not always be reliable” in responding to certain prompts related to current events and political topics.

The erstwhile minister of state for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar had warned Google that the people of India “are not to be experimented on” with unreliable platforms and algorithms and “ensuring safety and trust are legal obligation of platforms”.

The former Union minister in a latest post on social media platform X on Monday said, “LLMs “bullshit content” comes from most models being trained on content/ datasets that are – to politely use the phrase – NOT quality assured. That’s why you have the embarrassing sight of billion-dollar Gemini/ChatGPT on many occasions spewing nonsense. Garbage in, Garbage out is an old adage in programming especially if ur depending on scraping the internet.

New Microsoft update enables direct file sharing from Windows 11 to Android

New Microsoft update enables direct file sharing from Windows 11 to Android

Transferring files from one Operating System to another has always been a hassle, but no more. Microsoft is rolling out an update in its Windows 11 operating system to enable users to send files directly to Android devices. The US-based tech giant announced the Windows 11 beta update on June 14. The update includes a feature to allow users to easily share content from Windows to Android. With this feature, Microsoft will include the Android device in the share menu of Windows 11 as a shortcut called “My Phone”.

How it works

Users will have to download the link to Windows app on the Android device and Phone Link application on the PC. Then, users will have to pair the Android device to their Windows PC via the Link to Windows app on Android and Phone Link on the PC. After pairing the devices, your device will be displayed as a “My Phone” icon in the Windows share menu and you can share the content.

This easier direct sharing is possible because of Phone Link, which enables Windows and Android to connect through apps on different devices and the app is also used for syncing notifications, accessing apps and files and to send files as well. This makes file sharing more convenient and faster than the pre existing sharing methods because it brings Android sharing directly to the Windows share menu.

The feature is available to Windows 11 insiders and might not work for all apps as many apps utilise their own share menus to send files and do not employ the share menu of Windows 11. It is accessible only for beta testers for now and there is no information about when it might be available to all.

Indian websites saw 261 increase in cyberattacks from JanMar 2024 Study

Indian websites saw 261 increase in cyberattacks from JanMar 2024 Study

Indian websites witnessed a jump of 261 per cent in cyberattacks in the first quarter of 2024 compared to Q1 CY23, according to a report released on Monday by application security firm Indusface. Globally, the rise during the same period was 76 per cent.

The report, titled “State of Application Security” by Indusface, revealed that power and energy companies faced up to 500 times higher number of attacks than the industry average. This was because hackers and threat actors were found to be targeting less regulated industries in an attempt to charge heavy ransom, said the report.

“A 2.5x increase in attacks on Indian applications is a matter of great concern. Compared to last year, we are also seeing more attacks on unregulated industries such as power and manufacturing. Consistent with global trends, DDoS and bot continue to be the top two threat vectors employed by attackers in India,” said Ashish Tandon, founder and chief executive officer, Indusface.

According to the report, the Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks increased by 76 per cent in the first three months of 2024, compared to Q1 CY23.

DDoS is a cyberattack methodology where the attacker floods a server with internet traffic to prevent users from accessing connected online services and sites.

In most industries, DDoS came out to be the prominent attack vector except retail, manufacturing, and healthcare, where bot attacks were more prevalent.

The top DDoS attack origin countries were India, the United States, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands.

In terms of bot attacks, India, the US, Germany, and Japan were some of the major countries from where the maximum bot attacks were generated.

“Bot attacks are spreading rapidly with 100 per cent of healthcare apps and 90 per cent of Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector apps witnessing a bot attack throughout the quarter. Overall, bot attacks rose 147 per cent compared to Q1 CY23,” said the report.

Around 9 out of 10 BFSI sites experienced bot attacks across the world, the report found.

In the BFSI sector, hackers were also found to be using evasion techniques to bypass security measures and probe into sensitive data, leading to four times higher encoding attacks in the sector.
