YouTube finds a way to show ads in videos that adblockers cannot bypass

YouTube may have found a way to show advertisements in videos that ad-blocking tools and services could not bypass. Reportedly, the video streaming platform from Google is testing server-side ads that are delivered as part of the videos and not separately. Consumer technology news platform 9To5Google has reported, citing a third-party ad-blocker browser extension developer SponsorBlock, that YouTube is “currently experimenting with server-side ad injection.”

Server-side injection means that YouTube is now making advertisements and sponsored segments part of the video, rather than delivering them separately on the web, desktop or mobile app client. Since this process makes ads part of the videos, ad-blockers could not detect such ads. In an on-going process where ads are delivered separately by YouTube, third-party ad-blockers intercept these separately sent packages and remove advertisements from a streaming video. However, if YouTube adopts server-side injection broadly, it would make ads indistinguishable from the actual videos making it difficult for ad-blockers.

According to the report, SponsorBlock said that “all timestamps are offset by the ad times.” It essentially means server-side injected ads extend the video timeline, making the timestamps – required to create chapters – go berserk.

Though reported to be in experiment, server-side ad injection has already started affecting some users who rely on browser extension ad blockers for YouTube. On Reddit, some users have reported that while using the Ublock extension on Firefox browser, they are experiencing mid-video ads.

YouTube’s crack-down on ad-blockers began last year when the platform started showing pop-up messages asking users to disable the ad-blocker to watch videos on the platform. Google’s video streaming service further extended its effort to third-party ad-blocking apps earlier this year. At that time, YouTube said that those who are using third-party apps to block ads in the free tier may experience buffering issues while watching a video or see an error message that says, “The following content is not available on this app”.

YouTube has not officially confirmed the testing of server-side ad injection, however, it could prove to be an efficient way of cracking-down ad-blockers as YouTube further pushes its premium subscription to those who want an ad-free experience.

Japans new law forces Google and Apple to allow sale of thirdparty apps

Japans new law forces Google and Apple to allow sale of thirdparty apps

Japan passed a new law aimed at prohibiting Apple and Google from blocking the sale of apps by third-party developers on their respective app platforms (such as the App Store and Google Play Store), thereby providing users with greater options and potentially increasing competition, according to a report by Japanese news agency Kyodo News.

The law prohibits Apple and Google from restricting third-party companies from selling and operating apps on their platforms beyond their own app stores. Moreover, it mandates these platform providers to permit app developers to use their preferred payment platforms for user charges, rather than compelling them to opt for the native option.

The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC), confirming that the law received approval from the National Diet after submission in April 2024, emphasised its goal of fostering a competitive landscape conducive to innovation and offering users a diverse array of services.

“The bill aims to develop a competitive environment in which innovation by various entities is activated through competition and consumers can select and enjoy various services created by innovation, while ensuring security, etc. with respect to software particularly necessary for the use of smartphones (mobile operating systems (OS), application stores, browsers, and search engines, collectively referred to as “Specified Software”),” the Japanese regulator added.

Apple has expressed concerns regarding the potential implications of the law on the privacy and security experience of iPhone users, whereas Google has stated its commitment to collaborating with the government throughout the legal proceedings.

The report quoted Apple as saying, “We will continue our engagement with the Japan Fair Trade Commission during the implementation period… concerned about how the law will impact Japanese consumers and the secure and private iPhone experience our users have come to expect.”

Google, too, released a statement following the passing of the law by the Japanese government. “We have proactively engaged with the government to explain our practices in and contributions to this dynamic and highly competitive sector. We will continue to collaborate with the government and industry stakeholders throughout this process,” the report quoted a Google spokesperson as saying.

India has also proposed a similar antitrust legislation, which presents a regulatory hurdle for technology firms by outlining stringent compliance requirements. The Centre is presently reviewing a panel’s February report suggesting a new “Digital Competition Bill” to supplement current antitrust statutes.

These fresh regulations are expected to forbid major technology corporations such as Apple, Google, Meta, and Amazon from leveraging non-public user data and from showing bias towards their own products or services on their platforms. Furthermore, they would restrict these companies from limiting users’ capacity to download, install, or use third-party apps in any manner.

India great destination for tech IPOs markets welcoming Binny Bansal

Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, whose e-commerce startup was acquired by Walmart for $16 billion in 2018, has a piece of advice for entrepreneurs: Incorporate in India to build a “global company”.

Binny Bansal said this in Bengaluru as several Indian startups domiciled in Singapore and the United States consider shifting their base, or reverse-flipping, to India. These include companies in fintech, edtech, e-commerce, stockbroking, and health care.

“My advice to founders today building from India, even if they’re building a global company is to incorporate here,” he said at a media round table of South Park Commons (SPC), the Silicon Valley-based early-stage venture fund. “India is a great destination for tech IPOs (initial public offering). The capital markets are welcoming.”

Binny Bansal early this year exited the board of Flipkart, which he founded along with Sachin Bansal 16 years ago (the two men are not related). Sachin Bansal left the board in 2018 and founded Navi, a financial services firm. When US retail giant Walmart invested $16 billion for a majority stake in Flipkart, the Indian firm was valued at less than $21 billion. This made Sachin and Binny billionaires and provided blockbuster exits to investors.

Now, the demand for quick commerce is increasing, according to industry experts. The 15- to 20-minute delivery provided by quick-commerce players like Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart is taking sales away from e-commerce firms like Flipkart and Amazon. Binny Bansal acknowledged that the quick commerce model is working despite his scepticism.

“I give a lot of credit to the people who are making it work. I was also sceptical but I think it seems to be working pretty well,” said Bansal. “There is innovation that is happening against big companies. There is Amazon and Flipkart and all of them are trying to do this. But some people figured out how to do it. This was possible as there is talent, ambition, market need as well as ecosystem. If you look at Zepto, they were able to build a very strong team and execute well.”

When asked if the quick commerce model would succeed in India as it takes a lot of capital and there are issues related to unit economics and profitability, Binny Bansal said that the segment is getting traction from customers.

He has launched a startup called OppDoor to provide end-to-end solutions to e-commerce firms.

WhatsApp has increased the number of participants that can be added to video calls. You can now add up to 32 people on a video call on desktop or mobile. Earlier, users could include up to eight participants on the Windows and Mac apps. With this update, up to 32 participants can be part of the group video calls on both desktop and mobile.

Speaker spotlight

You will be able to see who is talking as the speaker will be automatically highlighted and will appear first on screen.

In addition to the above, WhatsApp announced support for Meta’s low bitrate (MLow) audio codec to make calls better. Microsoft to delay release of Recall AI feature amid security concerns

Microsoft to delay release of Recall AI feature amid security concerns

Microsoft will not roll out “Recall”, an AI-powered feature that tracks computer usage, with its new computers next week and will instead preview it with a smaller group later, the tech giant said on Thursday, amid concerns of privacy risks.

The Recall feature tracks web browsing to voice chats, creating a history stored on the computer that the user can search when they need to remember something they did, even months later.

Recall will now be available only for a preview on its Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks instead of being broadly available for Copilot+ PC users on June 18, Microsoft said in a blog post.

The decision is “rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers and to seek additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users,” the Redmond, Washington-based company said.

Copilot+ PCs are a category of personal computers with artificial intelligence (AI) features that were unveiled in May.

The WIP is a public software testing program that allows millions of “Windows biggest fans” to preview upcoming features for the operating system.

The company said it plans to make the Recall preview available for all Copilot+ PCs coming soon after feedback from the WIP community.

Privacy concerns were raised soon after the announcement of this feature, with some social media users expressing fears that it could enable spying, while billionaire technologist Elon Musk called it a “Black Mirror episode”, making comparisons to the Netflix series that explores the harmful effects of advanced technology.
