EUs new AI rules Industry opposed to revealing guarded trade secrets

New laws mandating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the European Union (EU) will now compel companies to be more transparent about the data used by them to train their systems, which could further reveal the industry’s closely guarded secrets, according to a report in the Times of India.

Since Microsoft-backed OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the public 18 months ago, there has been a significant increase in public interest and investment in generative AI. This technology involves applications capable of swiftly generating text, images, and audio content.

However, as the industry expands, questions have arisen about how AI companies acquire the data used to train their models and whether using bestselling books and Hollywood movies without the creators’ permission constitutes a copyright breach.

The EU’s recently enacted AI Act will be implemented in phases over the next two years, allowing regulators time to enforce the new laws while businesses adapt to new obligations. However, the practical application of some of these rules remains uncertain, the report said.

Act mandates ‘detailed summaries’

One of the more contentious sections of the Act mandates that organisations deploying general-purpose AI models, such as ChatGPT, must provide “detailed summaries” of the content used for training. The newly established AI Office announced plans to release a template for these summaries in early 2025, following stakeholder consultations. However, AI companies strongly oppose disclosing the training content of their models, arguing that such information constitutes a trade secret and could give competitors an unfair advantage if made public, the report said.

Over the past year, several prominent tech companies, such as Google, OpenAI, and Stability AI, have faced lawsuits from creators alleging improper use of their content for training AI models. Although US President Joe Biden has issued multiple executive orders addressing AI security risks, copyright issues remain largely untested, the report further stated.

OpenAI faces backlash

In response to increasing scrutiny, technology companies have entered into numerous content-licensing agreements with media outlets and websites. Notably, OpenAI has secured deals with the Financial Times and The Atlantic, while Google has partnered with NewsCorp and the social media platform Reddit.

Despite these efforts, OpenAI faced criticism in March when chief technology officer (CTO) Mira Murati declined to confirm whether YouTube videos had been used to train its video-generating tool, Sora, citing that such disclosure would violate the company’s terms and conditions.

OnePlus schedules event for June 18; Nord 4 and Nord CE 4 Lite expected

OnePlus schedules event for June 18; Nord 4 and Nord CE 4 Lite expected

OnePlus has scheduled an event on June 18 where the Chinese smartphone maker is anticipated to launch new models in its Nord series. Though the company has not specified any products, it has left a subtle hint about Nord in the image accompanying the event announcement on X, formerly Twitter. OnePlus is anticipated to unveil the Nord 4 and Nord CE 4 Lite smartphone on June 18.

OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite: Expected specifications

Recently, the Nord CE 4 Lite appeared on India’s Bureau of Identification (BIS) certification site and Singapore’s IMDA website. Said to be a more affordable version of the Nord CE 4, which launched in April this year, the Nord CE 4 Lite would be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 system-on-chip (SoC). It is expected to arrive in 8GB RAM as standard across variants and up to 256GB on-board storage. The OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite is expected to sport a 6.67-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display of 120Hz refresh rate. For imaging, the smartphone is anticipated to sport a 50MP primary sensor in a dual camera setup on the back. A 5,000 mAh battery with support for 67W fast wired charging is expected to power the smartphone.

OnePlus Nord 4: Expected Specifications

The OnePlus Nord 4 is said to be a rebrand of the OnePlus Ace 3V, which was launched in the company’s home country earlier this year. The smartphone is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC, paired with up to 16GB LPDDR5x RAM and up to 512GB UFS 4.0 storage. The OnePlus Nord 4 smartphone would likely sport a 6.74-inch AMOLED display of 120Hz refresh rate and 1.5K resolution. In the imaging department, the OnePlus Nord 4 is anticipated to feature a 50MP main sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS). An 8MP ultra-wide angle camera would likely complete the rear camera setup on the smartphone. On the front, a 16MP camera sensor is expected for selfies and video calling. The Nord 4 would likely get a 5,500 mAh battery with support for 100W SUPERVOOC wired charging.

iOS 18 dev beta introduces Live Voicemail with text transcription in India

iOS 18 dev beta introduces Live Voicemail with text transcription in India

Live Voicemail in iOS 18 Dev beta

With iOS 18, Apple could extend its Live Voicemail feature with text transcription to more regions, including India. This feature, initially introduced with iOS 17, allows users to divert voice calls to voicemail within the iPhone’s Phone app. The “Live” aspect of the feature pertains to real-time message transcription, which appears on the display. Previously available only in the United States and Canada, Live Voicemail can now be experienced in the iOS 18 developer beta in India.

How Live Voicemail works

When Live Voicemail is enabled, the iPhone answers an incoming call and prompts the caller to leave a voicemail. On the receiver’s end, the feature displays the ongoing voicemail recording alongside real-time text transcription. The receiver has the option to answer the call while the voicemail is being recorded. This feature is also compatible with the “Silence Unknown Callers” option; in such cases, calls from unknown numbers are directly routed to Live Voicemail without ringing.

Missed voicemails appear in a list of messages within the Phone app. The user can replay or delete these voicemails without listening to them. Currently, the feature operates exclusively in English, but it supports voicemails even if the caller is not using an iPhone.

How to enable Live Voicemail

To enable the Live Voicemail feature on an iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Open the Phone app and tap on the Voicemail option at the bottom right of the display.

  • Tap on “Set Up Now” and create a voicemail password.

  • Select a voicemail greeting, either the default message or a custom recording.

  • Once voicemail is set up, go to Settings > Phone > Live Voicemail and enable the feature.

WhatsApp may make chats migration simple between iOS and Android devices

WhatsApp may make chats migration simple between iOS and Android devices

WhatsApp is testing a new chats migration option, which would allow smartphone users to transfer chats from one device to another without necessitating upload on cloud storage services. Reportedly, the chats transfer option currently in the works would also make it simple to migrate chats between iOS and Android devices. WhatsApp allows chats migration between iOS and Android devices, but the current process is not easy and requires a learning curve for a successful attempt. It could change soon though.

According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, Meta’s instant messaging platform is testing a new built-in tool for chats migration in beta version (2.24.13.6). While there is no reference that the tool will support cross-platform migration, it seems to be a universal chat transfer system that may allow chats transfers between iOS and Android devices.

Unlike previously, the information with the QR code in the beta version does not say that the chat migration will be done only if the previous device was Android so it is assumed that transfer will be allowed across devices.

It should be kept in mind that the feature has not been officially confirmed and cannot be tested as it is not live. This feature will be supported by only devices with newer operating systems and older Android versions will not be supported.

Transferring chats between different devices has been a hassle on WhatsApp. It is even more intricate when it comes to cross-platform transfers, between iOS and Android devices. If WhatsApp indeed brings a universal chats transfer tool, the migration process between Android and iOS will become easier and simpler.
