India's developer population booming, age of AI has begun: GitHub CEO

Thomas Dohmke, chief executive officer, GitHub

India’s burgeoning developer community, combined with the newfound possibilities of artificial intelligence, will not only accelerate digital transformation but will drive immense human and economic progress for the country, said Thomas Dohmke, chief executive officer, GitHub, the world’s leading developer platform.

The platform revealed that there are over 15.4 million developers in India building on GitHub, growing 33 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y). India is set to surpass the United States as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027.

“Where software developers are, economic growth follows. By 2027, India will overtake the United States as the largest software developer community on Earth. This alone signals incredible prosperity ahead, but there’s more to it. At the same time India’s developer population is booming, the age of AI has begun,” said Dohmke during his address to technology leaders at GitHub Galaxy Bengaluru.

He said that developers are already 55 per cent faster when using AI coding assistant Copilot, meaning the software economy, valued globally in the trillions, is moving rapidly faster because of AI.

“India will not just be a global leader, but the global leader in the age of AI. Children and adults alike will learn to code in their native language, leading to a prolonged groundswell of developers,” said Dohmke. He said that creativity in Indian open source will flourish, blooming a spring of AI innovations and startups. And Indian businesses will carve a competitive advantage in the global market, as their developers build software with an accelerated speed of code.

GitHub was acquired in 2018 by Microsoft in a stock deal valued at $7.5 billion. Over 100 million people, including developers from over 90 per cent of the Fortune 100 companies, use GitHub to build products and services together across 420 million repositories.

Enterprises embracing AI

Today, GitHub Copilot has 1.8 million paid subscribers and has been adopted by over 50,000 organisations globally. In India, GitHub revealed that it continues to see the adoption of its Copilot-powered platform by companies in every industry, including Cognizant, MakeMyTrip, and Paytm, surging productivity and the pace of innovation for these businesses.

Prasad Sankaran, executive vice president, software and platform engineering, at tech firm Cognizant, said that since adopting GitHub Copilot, the firm has seen greater productivity and better software quality, and its developers can ship software ahead of the curve. So far, through Cognizant’s Synapse skilling programme, 35,000 Cognizant developers have been trained on GitHub Copilot, with an additional 40,000 developers slated to receive training. “We’ve seen the impact AI can bring, and that’s why we’re committed to empowering our developers with GitHub Copilot at scale. It’s a proven tool that can bring immense productivity gains, and unlock innovation in brand new ways,” said Sankaran.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and chief executive officer of fintech firm Paytm, said that security was of paramount importance to Paytm, given its range of financial services. To monitor its rapidly expanding public cloud infrastructure, Paytm used to rely on third-party tools. This would end up with delays in provisioning and impacting overall productivity. “Using GitHub Copilot, Paytm launched ‘Code Armor’, a solution revolutionising the way we approached security and development,” said Sharma.

Sanjay Mohan, group chief technology officer at travel platform MakeMyTrip, said the integration of GitHub Copilot at MakeMyTrip has resulted in substantial productivity gains on several fronts. “The coders are spared the boredom of coding up mundane stuff, freeing up time for higher-order problem solving, which is core to our business of travel,” said Mohan.

Mohammed Rafee Tarafdar, chief technology officer at tech firm Infosys, said that GitHub Copilot is empowering its developers to become more productive and efficient, and enabling them to focus more on value-creating tasks. “Generative AI is transforming every aspect of the software development lifecycle, and using Infosys Topaz assets, we are accelerating Gen AI adoption for our clients,” said Tarafdar.

Open-source innovations

GitHub also showcased how open-source communities in India are leveraging GitHub Copilot to build digital solutions that are helping save lives. For instance, Open Healthcare Network, a pioneering open-source organisation, is dedicated to enhancing healthcare delivery and management. Fuelled by a small team of dedicated developers, GitHub Copilot is accelerating the project’s growth as it addresses the needs of the country’s healthcare system. The project is now deployed in over 200 hospitals.

“This powerful generative AI tool has dramatically increased our productivity in coding, documentation, and testing,” said Srikanth Nadhamuni, founder and chief technology officer of Aadhaar, and chairman of 10BedICU.

Those who can't keep up will be left behind: Wadhwani Foundation CEO on AI

Those who can't keep up will be left behind: Wadhwani Foundation CEO on AI

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across sectors will cause a short-term churn, but lead to a substantial increase in productivity in the long term and fuel job creation, said Ajay Kela, president and CEO, Wadhwani Foundation.

“There are jobs that die because technologies come in. Those same technologies give birth to new jobs…In the short term, there will be disruption. Those that can’t keep up will be left behind,” he told Business Standard. Kela was talking on the sidelines of an event in New Delhi today.

The Wadhwani Foundation on Tuesday signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore, and C-CAMP, to launch Wadhwani Innovation Network Centres of Excellence (WIN-COE) in these institutes.

Each of these centres will receive up to $1 million annually. An additional joint investment with AICTE of $10 million via its 13 ‘Indovation Centres’ will support the research and translation activities of the next 100 institutes in the country.

Through this initiative, the firm aims to translate over 1,000 innovations annually into product-led startups.

“The biggest challenge for the country, especially with the growing youth population, is jobs. This initiative, alongside all our other initiatives, is targeted at the creation of these family wage jobs,” Kela said.

He also believes that in the long run, productivity will increase with AI. “In the long term, there will be an enormous increase in productivity across the board in the industry, which can have a significant impact on the growth of the nation, and, in turn, job creation,” Kela added.

On the foundation’s overarching plans in India, Kela said the overall target is to create 10 lakh jobs globally by 2030, with around 60 per cent of them in India, via its national entrepreneurship platform – Wadhwani Entrepreneur Network.

Furthermore, through the national skilling platform, the firm has a target of enabling one crore family-wage jobs during the same period.

“Our aim is to inspire students to look at entrepreneurship as a career, try to minimise the failure rate of those that start companies – which is more than 90 per cent, and to support micro businesses and businesses that have proven business models,” Kela said.

He added that policies around supporting startups and innovation are the need of the hour.

“The pressing need for the Indian government is (GDP) growth, tied to job growth. So, policies are required around supporting entrepreneurs, innovation, and high-quality skilling, tied to a very strong matrix of job creation,” Kela said.

He added that the upcoming Union Budget should also “bias towards” the creation of jobs, and supporting industries which would lead to job creation.

“For instance, we tend to ignore the 60 million micro businesses in India. Even if we consider roughly one per cent of them – around 1 million businesses – creating one job a year, we can create 5-10 million jobs a year,” Kela said.

Valorant video game coming to Xbox, PlayStation on June 14: Check details

Valorant video game coming to Xbox, PlayStation on June 14: Check details

Valorant Game (Image: Riot Games)

American video game developer Riot Games has confirmed that its tactical shooting game Valorant is coming to gaming consoles. The developer on its website has stated that Valorant will be available on Xbox and PlayStation platforms in a limited beta version starting June 14. The company has also started registrations for the same on its website.

The 5v5 tactical shooting game has been exclusive to Windows platform on PCs since its launch in 2020. However, it will be available in beta version soon on the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 in limited regions – including the US, UK, Canada, Europe and more. The company also stated that it will roll out in more regions “shortly thereafter”, however, a stable full version roll out on gaming consoles has not yet been confirmed.

The limited beta version of the game will only be available to players who are registered. Additionally, registered players will also be able to invite five more players to try out the console version of Valorant.

Riot games has confirmed that console players will not get access to cross-playing. This essentially means that Valorant players on Xbox and PlayStation players will only be able to play together, and will not be able to join games with PC players. The company said that this has been done to maintain “competitive integrity”. While cross playing is not available, cross-platform progression will be supported on all platforms as users will have the same Valorant account across PC and console versions of the game. This will allow saved in-game progress on PC to reflect on the console and vice-versa. This cross progression will allow users to carry over purchased Battle Pass, recruited Agents, purchased skins and more between console and PC.

Valorant: Details

Valorant is an online multiplayer tactical first-person shooting game, consisting of two teams of five players where one team attacks and other defends. The game is played in a series of rounds until a team wins a total of 13 rounds in a game. For the attacking team to win a round, they must eliminate all defenders, or plant a ‘spike’ in a designated site. For the defending team to win a round, they need to eliminate all attackers or defuse the ‘spike’ in time. The game features characters that are called agents who have their unique abilities that come handy during the game.

Apple may not support RCS messaging with end-to-end encryption on iPhone

Apple may not support RCS messaging with end-to-end encryption on iPhone

RCS messaging on iPhone (Source: Apple)

Apple has confirmed the availability of RCS messaging (Rich Communication Services) on iPhones with iOS 18. However, the US-based technology giant has not confirmed which version of the RCS Universal Profile would be implemented. A report by Android Authority stated that Universal Profile 2.4 RCS standard will be the one implemented on iPhones.

According to the report, a document by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), an organisation that represents mobile network operators globally, has landed credence to Apple for supporting RCS Universal Profile 2.4. Another document named “Messaging in the 5G era” from the GSMA stated that regulatory requirements in China will require all 5G user devices to support the Universal Profile 2.4 RCS standard.

Based on these reports, it is easy to assume that Apple’s decision to support RCS messaging on iPhones was based on regulatory requirements in China, in addition to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the EU.

Last year, in a statement to 9To5Mac, Apple said, “Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”

Even during the WWDC 2024, where Apple announced that RCS messaging support will be coming to iPhones with iOS 18, the company did not reveal much about what RCS support in the iOS Messages app will actually look like. Although supporting the RCS Universal Profile will allow interoperability with Android and other platforms, some features such as end-to-end encryption are not part of the requirement for RSC Universal Profile. This suggests that Apple would not add support for end-to-end encrypted messaging with Android users using Google Messages and keep it exclusive to its iMessage.
