Google Gemini gets a new voice on Android, but in limited capacity: Report

Google Gemini gets a new voice on Android, but in limited capacity: Report

Google continues to improve Gemini to make it more user-friendly. Google Gemini by default offers a text-only response but it offers a speaker icon on the top of each result to read the text aloud. The US-based software giant had announced at its I/O 2024 event that Gemini will offer ten natural sounding voices, instead of just one that is default.

Now, Google has reportedly started rolling out a new voice in limited capacity. According to 9to5Google, the new voice is only spotted in Gemini for Android and there is no change for iOS app and web client. The new voice currently does not offer the option to change the voice back in settings and that feature could be in development. Since the launch of Google’s AI chatbot, a male voice has read responses and, reportedly, activating Gemini on Android now reveals a female voice. Google is testing many voices for Gemini and the new voice could be one of them.

Google cannot replace Google Assistant with Gemini as of now, but it continues to bring changes that could make Gemini more familiar to encourage more users to switch to Gemini. Google Assistant uses colours for names and offers 12 voices. As Google plans to replace Google Assistant with Gemini in future, it is expected that Gemini will follow that same path.

Recently, after receiving new updates, Google Gemini on Android can now answer general questions even from the lock screen. The feature is rolling out gradually and might require enabling it manually. Google has updated its support pages detailing how to turn the feature on or off. Features like timers and alarms are expected to arrive to Gemini soon.

Meta to take on Apple's Vision Pro with a premium Quest MR headset: Report

Meta to take on Apple's Vision Pro with a premium Quest MR headset: Report

US-based technology giant Meta is reportedly planning a new high-end model of its Meta Quest mixed-reality headset to take on Apple’s Vision Pro. According to a report by The Verge, citing The Information, Meta is working on a higher-end headset for 2027, apart from the next-generation Meta Quest headsets that would likely launch in 2026.

According to the report, the next generation Meta Quest, which is anticipated to be called the Meta Quest 4, will feature two models – a standard and a premium model. The headsets are reportedly referred to as “Pismo Low” and “Pismo High” internally, and are scheduled to launch in 2026. In addition, there is another model codenamed “La Jolla”, which the company is reportedly working on. While the report does not highlight any specification or features, this new model is anticipated to be more premium than the Quest 4 series and likely compete with Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Meta’s Vision Pro competitor is expected to be launched in 2027.

Apart from the mixed-reality headsets, Meta is also reportedly working on a new pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses with an actual display. Although the company is working on its development, there are a few issues. According to the report, the AR glasses currently under work are significantly heavier than the current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Ray-Ban’s parent company, Essilor Luxottica has also reportedly refused to collaborate on the project due to concerns about the comfort of the device. If true, Meta’s next generation AR glasses would reportedly drop the Ray-Ban branding.

Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple is reportedly working on a more affordable mixed-reality headset that would work like an accessory for Mac and iPhone. According to the report, Apple’s Vision Product Group, the division in charge of the company’s mixed-reality headset, is focusing on a cheaper version of the Vision Pro. Apart from removing the components that makes the Vision Pro a standalone product, Apple could strip the EyeSight display, the external display that shows a user’s eyes on the outside and also lower down the display resolution of the internal screens to cut-down the cost.

Google to not allow low-quality Android apps on Play Store from Aug: Report

Google to not allow low-quality Android apps on Play Store from Aug: Report

Google has stringent rules for scrutinising Android apps before they make their way to Play Store but now Google is making the vetting process even more strict. The US-based software giant has revised its minimum quality requirements for Android apps and will not allow those that do not meet requirements on Play Store from August 31. Further, it could remove such Android apps from Play Store, too.

According to its revised “Spam and Minimum Functionality” policy, “Apps that crash, do not have the basic degree of adequate utility as mobile apps, lack engaging content, or exhibit other behavior that is not consistent with a functional and engaging user experience are not allowed on Google Play.”

Apps with limited functionality and content such as text only or single wallpaper apps or with broken functionality such as those that do not install or those that install but do not load will no longer be allowed on Play Store starting August 31.

Google Play Store already blocks apps that are unresponsive, crash, freeze, do not install or function abnormally. Google has said that it is updating the policy to “ensure apps meet uplifted standards for the Play catalogue and engage users through quality functionality and content user experiences.”

According to Google Security Blog, around 2.28 million apps were blocked from service in 2023 for violating policies and putting users’ security at risk. Moreover, around 200,000 app submissions were rejected. Google has also said that it has banned 333,000 “bad” Google play accounts in 2023 for policy violations and suspicion of fraud and malware.

Developers have time till the policy becomes effective to make sure that their apps comply with the quality standard of Play Store. This step is also being seen as a way for Google to make Android more secure and similar to Apple App Store when it comes to policies regarding apps.

Samsung halts Galaxy Buds 3 Pro earbuds shipment over quality issue: Report

Samsung halts Galaxy Buds 3 Pro earbuds shipment over quality issue: Report

Samsung galaxy Buds 3 Pro

Samsung is reportedly halting the shipment of its newly launched Galaxy Buds 3 Pro wireless earphones. According to a report by Android Authority, Samsung has confirmed that it is temporarily suspending deliveries of the Buds 3 Pro to distribution channels. This comes after a few early users of the new Galaxy Buds 3 Pro alleged that the included silicone eartips are being easily torn when trying to remove them from the buds.

Samsung in its statement to Android Authority said, “To ensure all products meet our quality standards, we have temporarily suspended deliveries of Galaxy Buds 3 Pro devices to distribution channels to conduct a full quality control evaluation before shipments to consumers take place. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.” The company further stated that if any customer is already in possession of the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and is experiencing any issues, “they should contact or visit their nearest Samsung Service Centre.”

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 3 along with the standard Galaxy Buds 3 and other ecosystem devices such as the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra are set to go on sale in India from August 24. The company has not officially offered details about the revised availability of the Buds Pro 3 in India.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro: Quality issue

Samsung has completely overhauled the design of Galaxy Buds with the third-generation model, featuring an Apple AirPods-like stem design and a new case. According to reports, some early users of the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro model have encountered quality issues with the device.

According to a report by The Verge, Samsung has used a hard plastic ring on the soft silicone eartips to attach it to the buds. However, when trying to remove the eartips for finding the right size or for cleaning, some users have found that the silicone can get ripped away from the attachment ring, leaving the plastic section attached to the buds.

Samsung on its website in its home country South Korea has also posted a guideline for removing and replacing the eartips on the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. Samsung on its website in South Korea recommends against using fingernails for removing the eartips as it “may tear.” The company also stated that the user should not press hard or twist the eartips but rather, flip the eartips and pull it away from the buds slowly to separate it.

Airlines operations return to normal after systems restored from IT outage

Airlines operations return to normal after systems restored from IT outage

Airlines operations across airports, which were impacted due to a global IT outage on Friday, returned to normalcy on Saturday with all services from ticket bookings to reservations and issuing of boarding passes going back completely to the online mode, sources said.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister for Civil Aviation K Ram Mohan Naidu said that the airline systems have started working normally, and all issues were likely to be resolved by noon on Saturday.

All operations are back to normal. All our services including bookings and reservations are online since Friday late evening, said an airline executive.

System is restored and there is no disruption in our services. It is getting back to normalcy, said a senior executive from a budget airline.

Nevertheless, as many as six to eight flights in the domestic sector were cancelled at Chennai Airport on Saturday, airport authorities said.

“About six flights in the domestic sector, including those airlines operating in Coimbatore, Kolkata, Kochi, Pune were cancelled by some airlines on Saturday. On the international route, there were no cancellations and some airlines reported a delay in the departure and arrival,” an official said.

On Friday, in one of the biggest-ever IT outages, an update of a product offered by global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike triggered problems with Microsoft’s Windows across the planet, hitting operations at financial sector companies and airlines while hospital operations got postponed and some television channels went off air.

Airports across the country witnessed chaotic scenes after the online passenger booking, reservation and boarding systems turned to manual mode due to the outage, resulting in higher passenger handling processing time and consequently hundreds of flights were delayed and many cancelled.

“Since 3 AM (Saturday), airline systems across airports have started working normally. Flight operations are going smoothly now,” Naidu said in a statement.

There is a backlog because of disruptions on Friday, and it is getting cleared gradually, the minister said and added that the ministry was constantly monitoring the operations at airports and airlines to ensure travel readjustments and refunds are taken care of.

Air India said its own, resilient IT infrastructure remained unaffected on Friday and continues to function as normal.

We confirm that none of Air India flights on 19 July was cancelled on account of the worldwide outage of travel systems, though there were some delays due to the impact of the outage on airport services.

The reservation and check-in systems of most of the airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa and Air India Express, are now operational, sources had said earlier in the day. “I am going to Ahmedabad. Online printing (Digi Yatra) is convenient, which wasn’t happening yesterday. Everything’s fine today. Flights are on time. What happened yesterday was a network issue. No one can do anything about that,” said a passenger at Delhi Airport.

“The global outage that led to operational difficulties is nearly resolved, and our teams have made significant progress in restoring normal operations. However, customers may still experience delays and schedule disruptions over the weekend,” budget carrier IndiGo said.

IndiGo, the largest airline by domestic market share, operating over 2,000 daily flights, had to cancel around 200 flights due to the Microsoft outage issue.

Two other carriers SpiceJet and Akasa Air said late Friday evening that all their systems at airports, including ticket bookings, were up and running.

SpiceJet said that “all its systems at airports, ticket bookings and call centres are up and running smoothly after a successful resolution of a Microsoft outage that impacted the aviation industry all through the day”.

“While the global systems downtime of reservations, check-in and boarding systems posed an unprecedented operational challenge to our ground services team, Akasa Air confirms that all its scheduled flights on Friday operated with minimum disruptions and nil cancellations,” the airline said.
