Nothing Phone 3 will redefine smartphone with AI-oriented experience: CEO

Nothing Phone 3 will redefine smartphone with AI-oriented experience: CEO

British consumer technology brand Nothing is going all out on artificial intelligence for its next flagship smartphone, the Phone 3, which is scheduled for launch in 2025. Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, in a video posted on X said that the company has been designing and prototyping “AI Interactions” for the past few months and these features will be “gradually introduced, starting with Phone (3) next year.” Although the company has not provided any details and specifications about the Phone 3, Pei in his video shared a preview of the AI-powered features the company is currently working on.

Nothing AI: What’s coming

The video shared by Carl Pei shows how Nothing is trying to “deeply integrate” AI into the smartphone’s operating system (OS) to offer a personalised and unique experience. One of the prototypes shown by the company in the video had a “hub” like home screen that offers “contextual and relevant” information from various apps in one place. Nothing said that the home screen set-up it is prototyping is personalised and will be unique to each user, based on their preference and usage.

In the demo, Nothing’s operating system automatically located and pulled-up a QR code of a flight boarding pass onto the home screen. Nothing is calling this “dynamic and context-aware” home screen. The home screen also showed tweets, reminders and more that it thinks users will be interested in.

Another feature that was shown in the video was a personalised “Companion”, an AI-powered voice assistant. The company showcased the on-boarding process for activating the AI companion. While setting it up, the AI chat bot asked a few questions about how the user wants his companion to be. Based on the user preferences, it presented a personalised AI assistant with characteristics of users choice such as “thoughtful”, “funny” and more. Nothing said that during testing, the feature has created AI assistants featuring characteristics that are unique. The company said that it is also exploring ways to accommodate the AI Companion in different places such as the control centre, lock screen and more.

Pei in his video also discussed what the future of consumer technology could be. He said that he believes that smartphones will remain the primary form factor for consumers within the AI space. However, according to him, the user experience on smartphones needs to evolve to accommodate the forthcoming changes in the realm of consumer technology. Nothing CEO said that with advancements in the field of AI, smartphones will enter into a “post-app world” where the operating system (OS) will be much more personalised and dynamic.

'US regulators to open antitrust probe against Microsoft, OpenAI & Nvidia'

'US regulators to open antitrust probe against Microsoft, OpenAI & Nvidia'

The US Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have reached a deal that allows them to proceed with antitrust investigations into the dominant roles that Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia play in the artificial intelligence industry, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Under the deal, the US Department of Justice will take the lead in investigating whether Nvidia violated antitrust laws, while the FTC will examine the conduct of OpenAI and Microsoft, the report said. While OpenAI’s parent is a nonprofit, Microsoft has invested $13 billion in a for-profit subsidiary, for what would be a 49% stake.

The Microsoft-OpenAI partnership is also under informal scrutiny in other regions. The regulators struck the deal over the past week and it is expected to be completed in the coming days, the report said, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.

The FTC is said to be looking into Microsoft’s $650 million deal with AI startup Inflection AI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The moves signal growing regulatory scrutiny into the AI industry. In January, the FTC ordered OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet Amazon and Anthropic to provide information on recent investments and partnerships involving generative AI companies and cloud service providers.

In July last year, the FTC opened an investigation into OpenAI on claims it had run afoul of consumer protection laws by putting personal reputations and data at risk.

Last week, US antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter referred to “structures and trends in AI that should give us pause,” at an AI conference, adding that the technology relies on massive amounts of data and computing power, which can give already-dominant firms a substantial advantage.

Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, the Justice Department and FTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

Representative Image: Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Speculations were rife for the last few months that Samsung will be reviving its Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch that was launched in 2021. Rumours indicated that it would be called Galaxy Watch 4 (2024) and brought back to the market as Samsung continues to refresh its other products. Now, some leaks have confirmed that it will be called Galaxy Watch FE. It is expected that the fan-edition watch from Samsung will be around $100 cheaper than Galaxy Watch 6, making it a more economical option. The smartwatch is anticipated to launch at Samsung Unpacked event, which is expected to be held on July 10 in Paris.

It looks like Samsung is gearing up for a series like the Apple Watch. The official website of Samsung displays the name Galaxy Watch FE with a 40mm, Bluetooth variant in black in the business section. Blue and rose models were also spotted in previous leaks. No images were found on the website, but the URL slug and metadata mentions the name Galaxy Watch FE.

According to 9to5Google, another leak disclosed that the watch will be powered by the current version of Samsung’s Wear OS skin. The upcoming Watch 7 series wearable is expected to run One UI 6 Watch based on Wear OS 5.

Images suggesting the look and design of the watch have been circulating online and suggest it will feature a 1.2-inch super AMOLED screen with 1.5GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It is also expected to boast a 247mAh battery and support wireless charging.  The is also expected to be powered by Exynos W920 Dual Core chipset and include connectivity options like Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, Wi-Fi 802 and more.

Nvidia becomes first chip firm to hit trn in mkt value, overtakes Apple

Nvidia becomes first chip firm to hit $3 trn in mkt value, overtakes Apple

By Subrat Patnaik and Carmen Reinicke

Nvidia Corp. was already the world’s most valuable semiconductor firm. Now, it’s become the first computer-chip company ever to hit $3 trillion in market capitalisation.

The shares of the Santa Clara, California-based firm have rallied roughly 147 per cent this year, adding about $1.8 trillion as the insatiable demand for its chips used to power artificial intelligence tasks skyrockets. On Wednesday, shares rose 5.2 per cent to close at a record $1,224.40, pushing the market value to more than $3 trillion and overtaking Apple Inc. in the process.

The last time Nvidia was worth more than Apple was in 2002, five years before the first iPhone was released. At the time, both companies were worth less than $10 billion each.

Nvidia has shown no signs of slowing down or letting its rivals catch up; the company’s Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said the firm plans to upgrade its so-called AI accelerators every year. Wednesday’s stock gain increased his wealth by more than $5 billion to $107.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The rise of generative AI is a new industrial revolution and Nvidia expects to play a major role as the technology shifts to personal computers, Huang told attendees at a keynote address at National Taiwan University.

“We see this sea change as in the very early innings,” said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research.

After the CEO’s keynote, Zino said he likes “the improved visibility” and sees “greater momentum on the GPU/CPU/networking side driving upside to consensus estimates.”

The company has been arguably the biggest beneficiary of a massive flood of AI spending, helping vault the company into a race to claim the title as the world’s most valuable company. The chipmaker still trails Microsoft Corp. by market value, but with shares on a tear Wall Street sees it as only a matter of time before Nvidia overtakes it.

Apple has struggled this year with the technology giant’s shares pressured by concerns over cooling iPhone demand in China and a fine from the European Union. Shares in the company have only recently turned positive for 2024 as investor sentiment toward the iPhone maker is slowly improving.
