Consumers expect significant AI role in future daily life: Ericsson report

Consumers expect significant AI role in future daily life: Ericsson report

Four out of five consumers will use artificial intelligence to make life-altering decisions by 2030. Moreover, 80 per cent of consumers could use AI-powered simulations in the next decade for life-altering decisions such as buying property, stocks, and more. Further, consumers could also use AI health simulations for making lifestyle changes. These are some of the insights from Ericsson ConsumerLab’s “10 Hot Consumer Trends 2030s – the AI-Powered Future” report.

The report stated that more than 60 per cent of AI technology users believe that they will not have full control over how AI will impact their lives by 2030. The figure further rises to 70 per cent for those who are sceptical about the role of AI in daily lives. While a few stated that the usage pattern of AI technology will see fragmentation in the future, more than 95 per cent of respondents believe that at least some of the AI trends will turn into reality.

Based on the responses, the report draws a few trends from the AI space that could become a reality by 2030s. Here are the details:

  • Artificial shoppers: 75 per cent of respondents believe that AI shopping assistants will replace advertisements and the big technology companies will use these AI-powered assistants to influence consumer purchases.

  • Generative Fashion: According to the report, six out of ten respondents agreed that humans in 2030s will use plastic surgeries to achieve the AI-generated beauty standards.

  • Life simulations: Almost half of the respondents stated that users will use AI-powered simulations to reduce uncertainties in daily life. For example, the report said that humans of 2030s might simulate marriages for future changes and divorce.

  • AI-assisted childcare: The report stated that AI will play a major role in assisting child care to improve children’s skills. However, 74 per cent of respondents said AI assistance in child care will reduce creative and emotional intelligence in children.

  • AI in employment: AI might improve the performance and efficiency in workspaces. Additionally, 67 per cent early adopters of AI technology believe that AI will be necessary to get job positions.

  • Co-existence with AI: The report stated that in future, as AIs will start getting more interconnected with each other, co-existance with AI will become difficult for humans. This argument was supported by 59 per cent of respondents.

While these AI trends paint a mixed future of AI technology, majority of the participants in the research said that AI regulations in the future will allow citizens to opt-out of using AI.

Ericsson ConsumerLab said that it took input from 6,500 early adopters of the AI technology across 13 different cities globally to draw conclusions regarding how AI will affect the consumer by 2030. The early adopters of this technology were asked to evaluate 120 digital service ideas across 15 areas, ranging from fashion and entertainment to working life and simulations.

Working to certify AI memory chips of Samsung, Micron Technology: Nvidia

Working to certify AI memory chips of Samsung, Micron Technology: Nvidia

“We just have to do the engineering. It’s just not done,” Huang said during a briefing at Computex in Taipei. “I want it to be done by yesterday. But it’s not done yet. We have to be patient.” Photo: Bloomberg

Nvidia Corp. is still working on the certification process for Samsung Electronics Co.’s high-bandwidth memory chips, a final required step before the Korean company can begin supplying a component essential to training AI platforms.

Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang told reporters Tuesday his company was examining the so-called HBM chips that Samsung and Micron Technology Inc. offer. Nvidia’s endorsement is needed before either can directly compete with SK Hynix Inc., whose share price has soared since it began supplying Nvidia with HBM3 and more advanced HBM3e chips.

Samsung has fallen well behind its smaller rival in that market, which has experienced explosive growth because the chips are used for training artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT. While Samsung hasn’t failed any qualification tests, its HBM product needed more engineering work, Huang told reporters.

“We just have to do the engineering. It’s just not done,” Huang said during a briefing at Computex in Taipei. “I want it to be done by yesterday. But it’s not done yet. We have to be patient.”

Samsung’s shares climbed as much as 4.1% in after-hours trading in Seoul, according to local financial data provider Koscom. Huang’s comments came after Reuters reported that Samsung was grappling with heat and power consumption issues in its HBMs, which are designed to work in tandem with Nvidia’s AI accelerators.

“There’s no story there,” Huang said when asked directly about that article.

Investors have become increasingly concerned about Samsung’s response to SK Hynix, which recently reported its fastest pace of revenue growth since at least 2010. The growing rift is considered one of the key factors behind Samsung’s recent decision to replace the head of its semiconductor division — an unusual step that signaled to investors the company’s resolve to make up lost ground.

In contrast, SK Hynix’s production capacity for such chips is almost fully booked through next year. Given the capacity constraints, Nvidia could benefit from having a strong alternative supplier.

Samsung — the world’s largest producer of memory chips overall — says it has already begun mass production of its latest HBM product, eight-layer HBM3E, and plans to mass produce 12-layer versions in the second quarter. The company expects its supply of HBM to increase by at least three times in 2024 compared with last year.

But SK Hynix is also expanding. It plans to spend about $14.6 billion building a new complex in South Korea to meet demand for HBM chips. It’s also erecting a $4 billion packaging facility in Indiana — its first in the US.

Meta's Instagram tests YouTube-like ads that you cannot skip: Details here

Meta's Instagram tests YouTube-like ads that you cannot skip: Details here

In a bid to make Instagram more lucrative for advertisers, the social media platform from Meta is testing a new feature called “ad breaks”. With it, Instagram will show you advertisements (ads) that you cannot skip. This means that to continue scrolling the content feed, you will have to watch the complete ad.

The ad break will appear after a fixed number of posts and halt your scrolling to make you watch the complete ad. It is unclear if this change will be applied to reels or stories and the Meta owned social media platform has not provided any information about whether it will be applicable for all users globally.

The feature was first spotted by X and Reddit users and has been confirmed by Instagram spokesperson Matthew Tye to The Verge. He said that Instagram would “provide updates should this test result in any formal product changes.”

A screenshot shared by Reddit users shows a timer displayed on the screen that let you know how much time is left for the ad to complete.  When the icon is tapped for more information, Instagram tells that this is a new ad viewing method on the platform and users will have to occasionally view an ad before continuing to browse.

Instagram already shows ads and sponsored posts while scrolling but they can be skipped. This feature will make Instagram similar to the free version of YouTube as YouTube also shows unskippable ads for its main and TV app. Tiktok also allows ads in between the videos but you can swipe to skip them. There is no option on Instagram to remove ads except for users in Europe.
