China’s Lenovo-owned smartphone brand Motorola is due to refresh its foldable line, the Razr, in June. The affordable model in the 2024 line-up, expected to be called Razr 50, is anticipated to feature a full-size display on the cover. For reference, the on-going affordable model in the Razr 40 series sports a 1.5-inch horizontal OLED display on the cover. However, its elder sibling, the Razr 40 Ultra, has a full-size 3.6-inch display on the cover.


Besides a big cover display on the vanilla model, Motorola is expected to introduce new colour themes – possibly from Pantone. Moreover, the Ultra model in the Rarz 50 series is expected to feature a slightly larger cover display. The main display on both the models, however, are expected to be the same 6.9-inch pOLED from the Razr 40 series.


According to media reports, the outer screen of Razr 50 Ultra would expand by nearly a half-inch whereas the cheaper alternative will have a bigger display. The screen will stretch to the phone’s hinge assembly, with a small bezel area allowing users more space to use the phone without necessitating the 6.9-inch pOLED inside display.


The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 system-on-chip. According to media reports, the Motorola’s Razr lineup would be available in dark blue, peach and dark green colour but colours could vary region wise.


About the Razr 50, the affordable foldable could be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 7300. It is expected to sport a dual-camera set-up on the cover, featuring a 50-megapixel main camera and a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Battery is expected to remain of a 4,200 mAh capacity, like the on-going model.

Google allows developers to build on-device AI-powered apps for Android


Google has shared details on how it plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its Android operating system with on-device processing, leveraging the small scaled Gemini Nano model. In “Android on-device AI under the hood” session at I/O 2024, Google shared insights on how it is already powering select apps such as Messages, Recorder and more with Gemini Nano and how it plans to open it up for third-party developers.


In the video session, Google explained that on-device AI is beneficial as it offers local processing of data, maintaining users privacy. Additionally, it also allows the AI model to process data without an active internet connection and offers reduced latency. However, there are some limitations to it as well. Due to hardware limitations, the on-device AI models have smaller parameter size compared to large language models (LLMs) and also a smaller context window.


Google said that it has chosen “Gemini Nano” as the foundation model for its Android platform and is looking at three major use cases for it:


  • Content Consumption (example: summarisation and overview of text)

  • Content Creation (example: suggestions and assistance in writing messages)

  • Content Classification (example: understanding the sentiment or emotion of the text)


Google said that it has integrated Gemini Nano into the Android system from Android 14 onwards through a service called AICore. The company said that it is already working with select third-party developers for “compelling on-device Gemini use cases” and will enable more developers to access and use Gemini Nano to bring apps powered by on-device AI to Android smartphones.


The company said that the AI model is already powering AI features on Google Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 series smartphones, and Google is planning to bring it to more “flagship Android devices in near future.”

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature in beta version for Android that allows users to lock chats on linked devices. For context, the chat lock feature has been available on Meta-owned instant messaging platform since 2023. However, it has been exclusive to primary devices. Soon, the feature could be available even on linked devices such as WhatsApp for web. The Chat Lock feature allows users to hide chats either through passcode or biometric authentication.


WhatsApp update tracking platform WABetaInfo has reported that the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (version 2.24.11.9) shows the chat lock feature in linked devices. According to the report, WhatsApp for Android prompts users to enter a secret code to open locked chats on linked devices. The secret code must be entered in the primary device and the locked chats status will appear in the secondary or linked device. After setting up the code, the locked chat will disappear from the linked device and can be accessed in the locked chat section.


For reference, the chat lock feature is used to hide conversation from the chats tab, ensuring an additional layer of privacy.  To access the locked chats, users need to swipe down and enter the password. However, this feature is only supported on the primary devices as of now.


Currently, there is no information on when the feature will be available for the stable version of WhatsApp. However, the update could roll out to the public after the beta testing to both iOS and Android users.


Besides locked chats, WhatsApp is reportedly planning to show Channels on linked devices, too. For context, WhatsApp Channels is a dedicated space on the platform for updates from organisations and people that are not in users contact list.  According to WABetaInfo, the beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.24.10.23) has instances suggesting that Channels can also be accessed on the linked devices. This will allow users to find, manage, follow and create Channels on linked devices such as desktop app.

Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE review: Budget tablet good for learning, entertainment


Xiaomi recently expanded its tablet portfolio in India with the introduction of the Redmi Pad SE. Starting at a price of Rs 12,999, this tablet is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 and features an 8,000mAh battery. A combination of decent hardware and feature-packed software makes the Redmi Pad SE a good budget option for those seeking a portable secondary device for work, study, and entertainment. But does it perform without flaws? Let us find out:


Design


The Redmi Pad SE boasts a clean aluminium unibody design with a matte finish all around. In landscape orientation, the tablet features a centre-aligned front facing camera, but the rear camera is positioned on the top-left corner in a glossy camera island. This set-up works fine with the cover case, but not if you are holding and using the tablet in your hands.


Nevertheless, there is Redmi branding on the top-right side on the rear. The frame of the tablet is thin and features openings for dual-speaker set-up on the left and the right sides – in landscape mode. In the same orientation, the power button is placed on the left side and volume buttons to the top side. Right side of the chassis houses the USB-C port and the 3.5mm audio jack. The top side also includes the volume controls, a microphone, and a microSD tray, with the bottom side maintaining a clean aesthetic.


On the front, the 11-inch display is set within a sleek plastic enclosure and features significant features. The display is surrounded by bezels on all sides, providing a uniform look from every angle.


The Redmi Pad SE has a sleek profile and is lightweight, making it comfortable to hold for extended periods. This is further enhanced by the matte finish on the aluminium chassis, which offers a good grip. Additionally, the matte finish helps prevent smudges and fingerprint marks.

Display and audio


The Redmi Pad SE features an 11-inch FHD+ LCD display of 90Hz refresh rate. The display is vivid, but lacks sharpness and clarity. While this difference might not be noticeable in most scenarios, the visual limitations become apparent when streaming high-resolution video content. One strong point of the display is its accuracy in colour reproduction. Redmi offers multiple colour scheme options such as Vivid, which optimises colours based on the content, Saturated mode for enhanced colour vibrancy, and Standard mode. I personally used the tablet in Saturated mode, although using it in Vivid mode may feel the same in most situations.


The 90 Hz refresh rate makes the display responsive, with quick scrolling and smooth animations. However, the 400 nits of peak brightness leave you wanting more when using the tablet outdoors.


In the audio department, the quad-speaker system with Dolby Atmos sound delivers clear audio with adequate loudness but lacks depth and bass. Additionally, the positioning of the speakers on the sides in landscape mode can create a muffled sound output if you are holding the tablet with both hands while watching a movie. However, the inclusion of a 3.5mm audio jack is a welcome addition.

Camera and microphone


The Redmi Pad SE impresses with its camera capabilities. Although not designed for professional photography, both the front and rear cameras perform their intended functions well. Photos taken with the rear camera are clear and more than adequate for capturing pictures of documents and notes. Similarly, the front camera, positioned for landscape orientation, excels in video calls, even under low light and artificial lighting conditions.


The tablet features a single microphone. While voice reception during video calls is adequate, the microphone tends to capture a lot of background noise.


Performance and multitasking


Xiaomi has been promoting the Pad SE’s multitasking capabilities, and it somewhat lives up to the hype. Powered by the Snapdragon 680 chip, the tablet may not boast the most powerful processor but is capable of handling everyday tasks. The processor is supported by 6GB RAM (as in the review unit), with an option to add an extra 5GB virtually. Tasks such as scrolling on social media, watching content, and browsing the web are smooth and seamless.


For multitasking, Redmi has implemented several software optimisations. Users can access the recently opened apps section to select apps for a split-screen setup, and customise the aspect ratio for each app in the split-screen. Additionally, a third app can be placed in a floating window, which can be minimised to a floating icon and placed anywhere on the screen. While most apps supported the split-screen setup, a few, like YouTube, did not open in a floating window. Despite this limitation, the feature is quite useful for students who want to take notes from a video while keeping Wikipedia open in a floating window for quick access. The processor handles these multiple tasks without any trouble, maintaining efficient thermal management. However, if you have multiple screens active and several tasks running in the background, you might start to notice some lag.


Battery


The Redmi Pad SE is powered by an 8,000mAh battery, which can last multiple days with light usage and up to a day and a few hours with heavy use. For instance, streaming an entire football match continuously in HD quality only reduced the battery from 70 per cent to 57 percent.


However, the impressive battery life is held back by the 10W charger included in the box which takes slightly more than three and a half hours to fully charge the battery from 5 per cent.


Verdict


Overall, the Redmi Pad SE is a decent option for those seeking a tablet for education, learning, and occasional content streaming. Priced from Rs 12,999, the device offers good value for money in its segment and serves as a reliable secondary portable device. However, if you need a tablet with powerful performance or an exceptional content-watching experience, there are other alternatives available in the market.

Microsoft is set to hold an event on May 20 where it is expected to announce ARM laptops in the Surface line, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips. Alongside, the US-based technology giant is expected to announce updates related to its artificial intelligence platform Copilot, improvements and new features to its Windows 11 platform, and consumer variants of the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6. Here is everything Microsoft is expected to announce at its event on May 20:


Microsoft event: Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered Surface devices


While Microsoft launched the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 for Businesses in March, the consumer-facing variants are expected to be significantly different.


On the hardware front, the business-oriented Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 were powered by Intel Core Ultra processors. The consumer-facing variants of these two Surface models would likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip.


Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chips are specifically designed for laptops and feature a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for running artificial intelligence (AI) models on-device. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February, Qualcomm demonstrated the capabilities of its Snapdragon X Elite chip by running a 7+ billion parameter multimodal AI model on-device. Qualcomm said that its NPU is up to 3x faster than competing x86 chips from Intel.


Apart from the new chip, the Surface devices are expected to feature changes in other departments as well. The consumer-centric Surface Pro 10 is expected to sport an OLED display rather than an LCD panel. Expected changes on the Surface Laptop 6 include slimmer bezels and rounded edges similar to the Surface Laptop Studio. The Surface Laptop 6 may get a new haptic touchpad.


Microsoft event: More Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered laptops


Alongside its Surface devices, Microsoft is expected to introduce ARM laptops from Windows partners such as Lenovo, Dell, and Asus. There have also been reports suggesting that Samsung might unveil a Snapdragon-powered Galaxy Book 4 variant at today’s event, too.


Microsoft event: Windows 11 24H2


In February, Microsoft announced that its annual update for Windows will not be Windows 12 but an improved Windows 11 version called “24H2”. While the company did not specify what changes the new version brings, it is likely that the Windows version 24H2 will bring optimisations for running Windows smoothly on ARM-based chips. Along with software optimisations, Microsoft would likely announce new AI tools and features with on-device processing, leveraging the NPU on the Snapdragon and Intel Core Ultra chips.

Indian smartphone brand Lava forayed into the wearable category with the launch of ProWatch ZN smartwatch. Priced at Rs 2,599, the smartwatch boasts a sharp rounded display, metallic case, support for voice calls through Bluetooth connectivity, multiple sports tracking features, health tracking features, and IP68 protection for resistance against water and dust. Though feature-packed, the Lava ProWatch ZN faces stiff competition from smartwatches from other home grown brands and startups such as Noise, Boult, Boat, and more. Is it just another or the ProWatch ZN has stand out features to carve a niche of itself? Let us find out:


Unboxing and compatibility


The Lava ProWatch ZN comes with a charging cable and a user guide. It is compatible with Android devices running version 8.0 and above, including Lava smartphones.


Design and comfort


The Lava ProWatch ZN has a premium design for an entry-level smartwatch. It features a 1.43-inch AMOLED display, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, housed in a metallic case. The watch has two buttons on the right side and boats silicone straps that are easy to remove. The back of the watch has a charging point and health sensors. While the watch may appear larger on smaller wrists, it is not heavy. As for the straps, these lack pores but are breathable. The watch is IP68 rated, ensuring it can withstand water and dust.

The Lava ProWatch ZN’s circular AMOLED display is its highlight, offering 600 nits of brightness that makes it readable even in outdoor conditions. The circular design and smooth scrolling, thanks to 466×466 pixel resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, deliver a good experience. The display is responsive to touch and the colours look sharp and vibrant.


Features


The Lava ProWatch ZN is packed with features similar to its competitors in this price range. It offers activity tracking data, including step counts, calories burned, and distance travelled. Workout details and tracking are also available for multiple sports activities. In terms of health features, the watch supports heart rate, blood oxygen level, sleep cycle, stress calculator, and female health reminder options.


While the blood oxygen level feature takes a bit longer to provide results, the company claims the watch has a high-accuracy PPG sensor and VP60A heart rate and SpO2.


But the standout feature for the ProWatch ZN is in-built games such as jigsaw puzzle, Racing, Disc Coloration, and 2048.


Other useful features include calculator, camera, find my phone, timer, stopwatch, alarm clock, music, and phone, and flashlight. The watch supports Bluetooth calling feature and the quality is decent for the price.


Companion app

ProSpot App


ProSpot App


The companion app, available only on Android devices, named ProSpot, can be installed through Google Play or by scanning a QR code available on the box. Once connected and set up with Bluetooth, the app can be linked with the watch. The app requires logging in and some basic information such as the wearer’s name, weight, height, and goal to proceed. The app offers over 150 watch faces and 110 sports modes to choose from, and allows watch face customisations. The app’s UI is simple and easy to use.

The Lava Prowatch ZN has a basic user interface. The sports mode can be directly opened using the lower right button on the smartwatch, and the same button can be used to pause and start actions. The rotating crown, on the other hand, can be used as a back button in addition to allowing you to scroll through the menu effortlessly. A top-down swipe opens the quick settings menu, whereas a swipe-up opens the messages panel, which mimics notifications from your smartphone.


Performance and battery


The watch sometimes experiences lag that slows down operations. It is not optimised for performance, but the overall user experience is good for a first-generation smartphone. Surprisingly, the watch works even when operated with wet fingers. It, however, struggles when there are water droplets or moisture on the display.


As for the battery life, it is good. The Lava ProWatch ZN’s 350mAh battery lasts up to one and a half weeks on a single charge. Over approximately 20 days of testing, I charged the battery only twice. The battery charges full with the supplied proprietary charger in one and a half hours. The watch supports always-on display mode, but that takes a toll on battery life.


Verdict


The Lava ProWatch ZN is a good first-generation smartwatch. It covers the fundamentals right, but sloppy performance and inaccurate health-and-fitness tracking pull it a notch below others. From price optics, however, it is a good deal, especially if you are looking for a budget smartwatch with option for Bluetooth calling.
