'US regulators to open antitrust probe against Microsoft, OpenAI & Nvidia'

The US Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have reached a deal that allows them to proceed with antitrust investigations into the dominant roles that Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia play in the artificial intelligence industry, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Under the deal, the US Department of Justice will take the lead in investigating whether Nvidia violated antitrust laws, while the FTC will examine the conduct of OpenAI and Microsoft, the report said. While OpenAI’s parent is a nonprofit, Microsoft has invested $13 billion in a for-profit subsidiary, for what would be a 49% stake.

The Microsoft-OpenAI partnership is also under informal scrutiny in other regions. The regulators struck the deal over the past week and it is expected to be completed in the coming days, the report said, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.

The FTC is said to be looking into Microsoft’s $650 million deal with AI startup Inflection AI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The moves signal growing regulatory scrutiny into the AI industry. In January, the FTC ordered OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet Amazon and Anthropic to provide information on recent investments and partnerships involving generative AI companies and cloud service providers.

In July last year, the FTC opened an investigation into OpenAI on claims it had run afoul of consumer protection laws by putting personal reputations and data at risk.

Last week, US antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter referred to “structures and trends in AI that should give us pause,” at an AI conference, adding that the technology relies on massive amounts of data and computing power, which can give already-dominant firms a substantial advantage.

Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, the Justice Department and FTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

Galaxy Watch FE appears on Samsung's official website ahead of launch

Galaxy Watch FE appears on Samsung's official website ahead of launch

Representative Image: Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Speculations were rife for the last few months that Samsung will be reviving its Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch that was launched in 2021. Rumours indicated that it would be called Galaxy Watch 4 (2024) and brought back to the market as Samsung continues to refresh its other products. Now, some leaks have confirmed that it will be called Galaxy Watch FE. It is expected that the fan-edition watch from Samsung will be around $100 cheaper than Galaxy Watch 6, making it a more economical option. The smartwatch is anticipated to launch at Samsung Unpacked event, which is expected to be held on July 10 in Paris.

It looks like Samsung is gearing up for a series like the Apple Watch. The official website of Samsung displays the name Galaxy Watch FE with a 40mm, Bluetooth variant in black in the business section. Blue and rose models were also spotted in previous leaks. No images were found on the website, but the URL slug and metadata mentions the name Galaxy Watch FE.

According to 9to5Google, another leak disclosed that the watch will be powered by the current version of Samsung’s Wear OS skin. The upcoming Watch 7 series wearable is expected to run One UI 6 Watch based on Wear OS 5.

Images suggesting the look and design of the watch have been circulating online and suggest it will feature a 1.2-inch super AMOLED screen with 1.5GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It is also expected to boast a 247mAh battery and support wireless charging.  The is also expected to be powered by Exynos W920 Dual Core chipset and include connectivity options like Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, Wi-Fi 802 and more.

Nvidia becomes first chip firm to hit trn in mkt value, overtakes Apple

Nvidia becomes first chip firm to hit $3 trn in mkt value, overtakes Apple

By Subrat Patnaik and Carmen Reinicke

Nvidia Corp. was already the world’s most valuable semiconductor firm. Now, it’s become the first computer-chip company ever to hit $3 trillion in market capitalisation.

The shares of the Santa Clara, California-based firm have rallied roughly 147 per cent this year, adding about $1.8 trillion as the insatiable demand for its chips used to power artificial intelligence tasks skyrockets. On Wednesday, shares rose 5.2 per cent to close at a record $1,224.40, pushing the market value to more than $3 trillion and overtaking Apple Inc. in the process.

The last time Nvidia was worth more than Apple was in 2002, five years before the first iPhone was released. At the time, both companies were worth less than $10 billion each.

Nvidia has shown no signs of slowing down or letting its rivals catch up; the company’s Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said the firm plans to upgrade its so-called AI accelerators every year. Wednesday’s stock gain increased his wealth by more than $5 billion to $107.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The rise of generative AI is a new industrial revolution and Nvidia expects to play a major role as the technology shifts to personal computers, Huang told attendees at a keynote address at National Taiwan University.

“We see this sea change as in the very early innings,” said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research.

After the CEO’s keynote, Zino said he likes “the improved visibility” and sees “greater momentum on the GPU/CPU/networking side driving upside to consensus estimates.”

The company has been arguably the biggest beneficiary of a massive flood of AI spending, helping vault the company into a race to claim the title as the world’s most valuable company. The chipmaker still trails Microsoft Corp. by market value, but with shares on a tear Wall Street sees it as only a matter of time before Nvidia overtakes it.

Apple has struggled this year with the technology giant’s shares pressured by concerns over cooling iPhone demand in China and a fine from the European Union. Shares in the company have only recently turned positive for 2024 as investor sentiment toward the iPhone maker is slowly improving.

YouTube toughens policy on gun videos in attempt to safeguard youth

YouTube toughens policy on gun videos in attempt to safeguard youth

YouTube is changing its policies about firearm videos in an effort to keep potentially dangerous content from reaching underage users.

The video sharing platform owned by Google said Wednesday it will prohibit any videos demonstrating how to remove firearm safety devices. In addition, videos showing homemade guns, automatic weapons and certain firearm accessories like silencers will be restricted to users 18 and older.

The changes take effect June 18 and come after gun safety advocates have repeatedly called on the platform to do more to ensure gun videos aren’t making their way to the site’s youngest users, potentially traumatising children or sending them down dark paths of extremism and violence.

Katie Paul, director of the Tech Transparency Project, said the change was welcome news and a step in the right direction. But she questioned why the platform took so long to issue a new policy, and said her group will look to see how effectively YouTube enforces its new rule.

Firearms are the number one cause of death for children and teens in America,” said Paul, whose group has long sought stronger age controls on online gun videos. “As always with YouTube, the real proof of change is whether the company enforces the policies it has on the books. Until YouTube takes real action to prevent videos about guns and gun violence from reaching minors, its policies remain empty words.

Last year, researchers at Paul’s group created YouTube accounts that mimicked the behaviour of 9-year-old American boys with a stated interest in video games. The researchers found that YouTube’s recommendations system forwarded these accounts graphic videos of school shootings, tactical gun training videos and how-to instructions on making firearms fully automatic.

One video featured an elementary school-age girl wielding a handgun; another showed a shooter using a .50 caliber gun to fire on a dummy head filled with lifelike blood and brains. Many of the videos violated YouTube’s own policies against violent or gory content.

YouTube said the policy changes were designed as an update to reflect new developments, like 3D printed guns, which have become more available in recent years. YouTube requires users under 17 to get their parent’s permission before using their site; accounts for users younger than 13 are linked to the parental account.

We regularly review our guidelines and consult with outside experts to make sure we are drawing the line at the right place, said company spokesman Javier Hernandez.

Along with TikTok, YouTube is one of the most popular sites for children and teens. Both sites have been questioned in the past for hosting, and in some cases promoting, videos that encourage gun violence, eating disorders and self-harm.

Several perpetrators of recent mass shootings have used social media and video streaming platforms to glorify violence, foreshadow or even livestream their attacks.

Diverted Nvidia chips to X, xAI as Tesla had no space to place them: Musk

Diverted Nvidia chips to X, xAI as Tesla had no space to place them: Musk

Elon Musk confirmed he diverted artificial intelligence chips away from Tesla Inc. to his X Corp. and xAI Corp. ventures, offering explanations both for the redirected shipment and internal Nvidia Corp. emails casting doubt on the carmaker’s procurement plans.

In a series of posts Tuesday on X, Musk wrote that Tesla had no place to put Nvidia chips where they could be turned on. CNBC reported earlier that the billionaire redirected 12,000 of the chipmaker’s H100 graphics processing units originally slated for Tesla to X instead, citing an Nvidia memo from December.

In another email CNBC viewed from late April, Nvidia staff said Musk made statements during the automaker’s first-quarter earnings call and on X that conflicted with the company’s bookings with the chipmaker.

The Tesla chief executive officer said during the April 23 earnings call that roughly 35,000 of the company’s H100s were active, and he expected the electric-vehicle maker to have around 85,000 working by year-end. On April 28, he wrote on X that Tesla will spend around $10 billion this year on AI.

Musk suggested in one of his posts Tuesday that Nvidia wouldn’t be able to track all the money Tesla is spending on AI this year, writing that about half of its expenditures will be internal. The company is working on its own supercomputer as part of broader efforts to develop self-driving technology. It also procures sensors for all of its cars, regardless of whether consumers pay extra for its more advanced driver-assistance system.

“My current best guess for Nvidia purchases by Tesla are $3B to $4B this year,” Musk wrote.

Following CNBC’s report, Tesla shares erased gains in early trading and fell as much as 1.3% after the open. The stock has dropped about 30% this year.

Musk’s plans for developing AI within Tesla have come under greater scrutiny since he threatened in January to take that work elsewhere unless he’s awarded around 25% voting control of the EV maker. Weeks after making that demand, a Delaware court voided the compensation package that would have awarded him tens of billions of dollars worth of stock options and boosted his stake in the carmaker. Tesla shareholders will vote on the pay deal again at its June 13 annual meeting.

Musk ordered up Tesla’s biggest-ever layoffs earlier this year and is staking its future on self-driving vehicle development.

While the idea of offering an autonomous taxi service has been kicking around the company for at least eight years, Tesla has yet to stand up much of the infrastructure it would need, nor has it secured regulatory approval to test robotaxis on public roads.

The billionaire acquired X, the company formerly known as Twitter, for $44 billion in late 2022 and founded xAI the following year. The two companies are closely linked, with Musk having said late last year that investors in X will own 25% of xAI. The latter company announced last month that it had raised $6 billion.
