Scammer gives online security advice to man on WhatsApp; Paytm MD reacts

“Sab digital India ka kamal h [This is all thanks to digital India],” a scammer told a man from Bengaluru in a WhatsApp conversation that has now gone viral on X (formerly Twitter). The scammer also advised the man on how to avoid online frauds.

Chetty Arun, a resident of Bengaluru, shared screenshots of his WhatsApp conversation with a scammer on X last week.

Arun, who had grown frustrated with persistent scam attempts on WhatsApp, decided to confront one of the fraudsters. However, instead of resorting to anger, he opted for a playful approach, leading to an unexpected and entertaining exchange between the two parties. The scammer, initially taken aback by Arun’s response, eventually opened up about their tactics and even offered insights into their operations, leading to a light-hearted exchange between the two.

The conversation began when Arun received a suspicious APK file from the scammer, labelled: CSC Government.Official. The name under the number also read “CSC Government Group” and was listed as a business account.

Sensing foul play, Arun engaged the scammer in conversation. He first wrote, “I am on an iPhone. APK android ka hota hai [APK are for android phones]. Go scam an android person.”

Arun tried to call the fraudster on the number but they did not respond. He then began asking whether people fell for these scams and what would happen if he tried to download the file.

The scammer admitted that the number they used to contact Arun belonged to a different victim. They said downloading the file would give the scammer access to all messages received by the victim on their number, including one-time passwords (OTPs).

The fraudster admitted to using OTPs obtained from victims to sign up for e-commerce platforms to steal money. Similarly, if people saved their cards on site, they could make transactions up till a certain amount without the need of the CVV number.

The scammer also told Arun that these scams have been going on for 10-12 years. The fraudster themself, however, had only been engaging in these for the last 15 days or so. They then went on a rant about how digital platforms lacked security.

The conversation took an unexpected turn when the scammer asked about Arun’s personal life, congratulated him on his upcoming wedding, and even attempted to find him on Facebook.

The scammer told Arun to warn his friends against online scams and to not download or click links sent by unknown numbers.

The post quickly went viral on social media, amassing nearly three million views. The post started many discussions on online threats and cybersecurity.

Reacting to the post, a user added, “Terrific ability to converse Chetty Arun and thanks for posting the informative thread.”

It even caught the attention of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who shared the post with the caption: “You won’t stop till you read this full thread.”

Apple may employ over 500,000 people in India over the next 3 years

iPhone maker Apple through its vendors is expected to employ over 500,000 people in India over the next three years, according to government sources.

At present Apple’s vendors and suppliers employ 150,000 people in India. Tata Electronics, which runs two plants for Apple, is the biggest job generator.

“Apple is accelerating hiring in India. At a conservative estimate, it is going to employ five lakh people in the next three years through its vendors and components suppliers,” a senior government officer told PTI.

When contacted, Apple declined to comment on the projection.

Apple has plans to scale up production in India by over five-fold to around $40 billion (about 3.32 lakh crore) in the next 4-5 years.

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple led the India market with the highest revenue in 2023 for the first time, while Samsung topped the chart in terms of volume sales.

The firm in its recent report said Apple surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in shipments and captured the top position in revenue in a calendar year for the first time.

Apple’s iPhone exports from India rose sharply to $12.1 billion in 2023-24 from $6.27 billion in 2022-23, representing a massive surge of nearly 100 per cent, according to trade intelligence platform The Trade Vision.

UC Native M2 review: Not perfect, yet a better water purifier than others

UC Native M2 review: Not perfect, yet a better water purifier than others

Urban Company Native M2 RO Water Purifier

Last year, Urban Company, a provider of on-demand home services, expanded into the branded products domain with the launch of the Native range of water purifiers. Unlike typical RO water purifiers requiring quarterly servicing, Urban Company claimed its products feature special filters lasting two years. The company backs this claim with a two-year warranty on the Native RO water purifiers, covering servicing, filter replacement, and spare parts.

With important things covered in warranty, it comes down to the end experience to establish if the water purifiers from Urban Company are actually good. To do so, I picked the Native M2 for review. It is the top-end model in the range, priced at Rs 17,499, with Internet of Things (IoT) enabled for internet connectivity, companion app support, and data monitoring.

Urban Company Native M2: Where to buy

The Native M2 is available on the Urban Company app and Amazon India, both offering free installation. My unit was procured via the Urban Company app, allowing me to schedule installation at my convenience. However, there was an initial installation no-show, necessitating a rescheduled service and causing unnecessary delay.

Urban Company Native M2: Filtration system

The Native M2 comprises a main unit housing most filters and a pre-filter inside a candle-shaped bottle. While the specific filter types aren’t externally visible, the companion app lists six filters – pre-filter, sediment filter, pre-carbon filter, RO membrane, alkaline and mineral cartridges with post carbon filter, and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane. These filters, Urban Company said, enables 10-stage water filtration system that removes 99.99 per cent impurities.

Urban Company Native M2: Highlights

The Native M2 boasts a distinctive design in premium black, featuring a centre-aligned water outlet with a guiding blue light for visibility in low light. A sturdy retractable tray at the bottom facilitates glass or bottle placement during filling. With an eight-litre built-in tank, ample water storage is provided.

The unit features touch controls for dispensing water in three modes: Glass, Water, and Freeflow. The controls are backlit and flanked by ring-shaped LED, which glows in the standby mode and blinks when the unit is in use. Since the device is IoT enabled, the LED doubles up as an indicator to show paring status.

Speaking of IoT, the Native M2 is internet enabled and supported by the Urban Company app. The app has a dedicated section for the Native water purifiers where you can see information related to TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), warranty information, filter health details, and water consumption history. It is through the app you can claim warranty and the process is straight forward – tap on claim warranty option, pick date and time to schedule engineer’s visit, and you are done.

Urban Company Native M2: What could have been better

The Native M2 is good, but not without flaws. Urban Company has covered the essentials rights, but not addressed the common issue of water wastage inherent in such purifiers. Otherwise also not everything about the Native M2 is perfect. For example, the machine makes lots of noise when in use. The noise from machine is particularly annoying in night hours. Pulling the plug is not the solution because the machine has motor-powered water outlet. Therefore, you cannot dispense water from the machine even if has it in the storage.

Verdict

The Urban Company Native M2 is a value proposition in the RO water purifier segment. Its two-year warranty assures savings and peace of mind. As Urban Company’s inaugural branded product, the Native M2 meets expectations, albeit with room for improvement, especially concerning water wastage and noise issues.

After India and Vietnam, Apple looks to manufacture products in Indonesia

After India and Vietnam, Apple looks to manufacture products in Indonesia

Apple is considering manufacturing some of its products in Indonesia, following the American technology giant’s decision to increase investment in Vietnam, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quoted chief executive officer (CEO) Tim Cook as saying.

Cook said he met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta on Wednesday to discuss potential investments in Southeast Asia largest economy, WSJ reported.

At a press conference, Cook said, “We talked about the president’s desire to see manufacturing in the country, and it’s something that we will look at. I think the investment ability in Indonesia is endless.”

However, the Apple chief executive did not offer a timeline for the investment.

WSJ report stated that Cook’s trip to Indonesia coincides with officials’ efforts to engage other prominent figures from the US tech industry, aiming to expand the country’s role in global technology supply chains.

The company does not have a manufacturing base in Indonesia, where Apple’s iPhones and computers have a strong following, according to the WSJ report.

The WSJ reported that since 2018, the company has invested in numerous developer training centres across the country, with one recently announced in Bali. While the majority of Apple’s assembly operations take place in China, the company has plans to broaden its supply chain in response to escalating tensions between the US and China, as well as growing global concerns regarding trade decoupling.

In December last year, Apple announced its plans to increase iPhone production in India, a step that could elevate the South Asian nation’s share to a quarter of global production in the coming years, the WSJ reported.

According to a report in the Economic Times (ET), Apple produced iPhones worth over Rs 1 trillion in India in 2023. Of this, made-in-India iPhones worth Rs 65,000 crore were exported last year.

The ET reported that the company increased its India market share to 6 per cent in FY23 from 2 per cent in FY18. During the same period, Apple’s India business has jumped to Rs 49,322 crore from Rs 13,097 crore. Foxconn has been the leading manufacturer of iPhones in India, contributing 68 per cent of total production, followed by Pegatron with 18 per cent and Wistron at 14 per cent.

Recently, Apple announced its plan to increase spending on suppliers in Vietnam. In a statement, the company said, “Today, Apple announced it will increase spending on suppliers in Vietnam, along with new progress in an initiative to support clean water for local schools.”

The company further said it has allocated nearly $16 billion towards its supply chain in Vietnam since 2019.

Vietnam, a hub for Apple, manufactures iPads, AirPods and Apple Watches in Vietnam, and suppliers for MacBooks are also investing in the country. As of 2022, the company had 25 suppliers in Vietnam, which include Foxconn, GoerTek, Luxshare, Intel, Samsung Electronics, and Compal. The company said that it has spent almost $16 billion through its supply chain in the country since 2019, and has created more than 200,000 jobs in Vietnam.
