Russia, Ukraine breeding ground of highest number of cybercrimes: Survey

Russia, Ukraine breeding ground of highest number of cybercrimes: Survey

A new “World Cybercrime Index” developed by researchers shows that a majority of cybercriminals come from just a few countries.

According to a report in The Indian Express, cybercrime costs the world around $9.22 trillion in 2024, and it is expected to grow to $13.82 trillion by 2028. However, pinpointing the geographical bases of cybercriminal activities remains challenging because they use methods that block their locations.

The survey, through which researchers created the “World Cybercrime Index”, showed that cybercriminal threats originate only in a small number of countries — China, Russia, Ukraine, the US, Romania, and Nigeria ranked in the top 10 for each of the selected five categories, namely technical products or services, attacks and extortion, data or identity theft, scams, and cashing out or money laundering.

The survey stated that as many as 97 countries were named as being hubs for a particular category.

According to the IE report, the survey was conducted by Miranda Bruce (University of Oxford/University of New South Wales), Jonathan Lusthaus (University of Oxford), Ridhi Kashyap (University of Oxford), Nigel Phair (Monash University), and Federico Varese (Sciences Po). These researchers spoke to leading cybercrime experts to create the survey.

India secured the 10th position in the rankings, scoring 7.90 for impact, 6.60 for the professionalism of cybercriminals, and 6.65 for technical skills. In contrast, China scored 8.22, 7.70, and 7.81, respectively, while the US achieved 7.99, 7.21, and 7.21. Overall, India garnered a score of 7.05, with China and the US obtaining 7.91 and 7.47, respectively, positioning them in third and fourth places. The top two spots were claimed by Russia and Ukraine, according to the IE report.

Additionally, the researchers observed a correlation between specific types of cybercrimes and their originating countries. For instance, the US was frequently linked to data and identity theft, whereas cybercrimes related to technical products or services appeared to predominantly originate from China.

In the future, this index could enhance cybercrime research, enabling organisations to make tailored preventive measures aimed at particular “hub countries.” However, the study is subject to limitations due to its relatively small pool of experts, potentially lacking global representation. Moreover, inaccuracies may arise from variations in how experts interpret survey questions. Furthermore, the index fails to address the complex overlap between profit-motivated cybercrime and state-sanctioned (or incentivised) criminal activities, according to the IE report.

The results of the study were published in the journal PLOS ONE on April 10.

High-resolution image sharing

Meta announced that it was rolling out a new feature which would allow users to send high-definition (HD) images. But the Messenger platform already has the ability to share images in 4K resolution. So what is new here?

In a statement to The Verge, Liz Sweeney, a spokesperson for Meta, clarified that the 4K images that were previously shared on the platform were more compressed; how it appeared on the receiver’s end depended on the “network conditions of both the sender and the receiver”. In the new update, Meta is rolling out a dedicated “HD Toggle” on the chat composer which will let users share images in 4K resolution. If the image is shared without switching on the toggle, images will be shared in 2K resolution instead.

Elon Musk's X faces outage, users unable to access their accounts

Elon Musk's X faces outage, users unable to access their accounts

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X (formerly Twitter) faced criticism on Thursday when users were unable to access the platform. According to downdetector.com, which monitors online outages, several users experienced problems accessing the platform.

Downdetector, which aggregates status reports from various sources including user feedback, underscored the widespread nature of the issue. Users across the platform reported being unable to access X, raising concerns about the reliability of the recently rebranded social media platform.

The outage tracker’s live Outage map indicated that several cities in India, such as Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Cuttack, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, reported difficulties with platform X.

The last major outage faced by the microblogging platform occurred in December 2023, affecting users worldwide. While X did not provide an explanation for the downtime on Thursday, services were restored within hours.

This incident follows a series of recent similar outages experienced by platforms owned by Meta, Facebook’s parent company. Earlier this month, both WhatsApp and Instagram, experienced an outage that lasted for almost an hour. In March, a significant outage affected Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads, rendering users unable to access these platforms for nearly two hours.

The outage dealt a blow to Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, not only in terms of user engagement but also financially. Experts have pointed out the substantial losses incurred by the company, with Meta experiencing a 1.5 per cent drop in market value due to outage issues affecting a portion of its 3.98 billion global users across its social media platforms. This decline amounted to a $18 billion loss for the company.

Oppo, OnePlus partner with Google to bring Gemini Ultra AI to smartphones

Chinese smartphone brands, Oppo and OnePlus have announced they will soon integrate Google’s most powerful Gemini 1.0 Ultra artificial intelligence (AI) model into their devices. The companies have confirmed that features based on the Gemini Ultra model will start to roll out on their smartphones later this year.

At the Google Cloud Next 2024 event, General Manager of AI Product for Oppo and OnePlus, Nicole Zhang, revealed that both smartphone brands had already rolled out multiple generative AI features to customers in China.

“By collaborating with Google to integrate both Gemini and Google Cloud AI into smartphones, and by forming alliances with other industry pioneers for a variety of AI experiences, we are thrilled to ambitiously broaden the scope of mobile AI innovations,” he added.

OnePlus recently announced its “AI Eraser”, an image-editing feature allowing users to remove unwanted elements from images. The feature has already started rolling out in India to select devices, including the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. The company, however, clarified that this feature was powered by its proprietary large language model.

Upcoming Gemini Ultra powered AI features on Oppo and OnePlus devices

Beyond the AI Eraser tool, Oppo and OnePlus have confirmed that they are working with Google to incorporate AI tools and other Cloud AI products into their upcoming releases. Some of the features include a tool for summarising news articles, audio summarisation, AI-powered social media content generator and more.

Features like AI summariser, AI GC remover and an indigenously developed Breeno Touch feature, which scans the screen content and suggests related services based on the user’s search are available on OnePlus devices in China. With the company now announcing a partnership with Google, it appears OnePlus will offer similar services powered by the Gemini 1.0 Ultra model for users globally.
