Yahoo acquires Instagram co-founders' AI-powered news platform Artifact

Yahoo said on Tuesday, it had acquired Instagram co-founders’ AI-driven news platform, Artifact, and will incorporate its technology across the U.S. web services provider’s news and other sites.

The deal signals continued pain for media start-ups struggling to grow revenue at a time when Big Tech giants Alphabet and Meta Platforms attract the bulk of advertising sales.

In January, Artifact said in a blogpost it would wind down operations of its app as “the market opportunity isn’t big enough to warrant continued investment in this way.” Yahoo, which also owns news brands TechCrunch, Engadget and Yahoo Finance, said Artifact’s AI-powered recommendation engine and other features will help scale its news operations and deliver personalized content to audience.

The online publisher also owns a minority stake in content recommendation platform Taboola.

Yahoo, which declined to share financial details, was bought out by private equity firm Apollo Global Management for $5 billion in 2021.

Artifact was launched in early 2023 by Systrom and Mike Krieger. They were earlier at Meta, then known as Facebook, after the company’s acquisition of Instagram in 2012.

The duo had left the Facebook owner in late 2018, which some

media reports

later described as due to their strained relationship with Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg and differences in their visions for Instagram.

Systrom and Krieger will work with Yahoo in an advisory capacity during this transition, Yahoo said in a statement.

Intel discloses billion operating loss in 2023 for chip-making unit

Intel discloses $7 billion operating loss in 2023 for chip-making unit

Intel on Tuesday disclosed deepening operating losses for its foundry business, a blow to the chipmaker as it tries to regain a technology lead it lost in recent years to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.

Intel said the manufacturing unit had $7 billion in operating losses for 2023, a steeper loss than the $5.2 billion in operating losses the year before. The unit had revenue of $18.9 billion for 2023, down 31% from $27.49 billion the year before.

Intel shares were down 4.3% after the documents were filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

During a presentation for investors, Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger said 2024 would be the year of worst operating losses for the company’s chipmaking business and that it expects to break even on an operating basis by about 2027.

Gelsinger said the foundry business was weighed down by bad decisions, including one year ago against using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines from Dutch firm ASML. While those machines can cost more than $150 million, they are more cost-effective than earlier chip making tools.

Partially as a result of the missteps, Intel has outsourced about 30% of the total number of wafers to external contract manufacturers such as TSMC, Gelsinger said. It aims to bring that number down to roughly 20%.

Intel has now switched over to using EUV tools, which will cover more and more production needs as older machines are phased out.

“In the post EUV era, we see that we’re very competitive now on price, performance (and) back to leadership,” Gelsinger said.

“And in the pre-EUV era we carried a lot of costs and (were) uncompetitive.”

Intel plans to spend $100 billion on building or expanding chip factories in four U.S. states. Its business turnaround plan depends on persuading outside companies to use its manufacturing services.

As part of that plan, Intel told investors it would start reporting the results of its manufacturing operations as a standalone unit. The company has been investing heavily to catch up to its primary chipmaking rivals, TSMC and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

iOS 17.5: What's new coming to Apple iPhones with upcoming software update

iOS 17.5: What's new coming to Apple iPhones with upcoming software update

Apple has released the first beta version of its upcoming iOS 17.5 update for iPhone to select developers. The update is available to registered developers under the “Software Update” section in the “General Settings” menu on iPhone.

The iOS 17.5 beta version introduces new features such as the ability to disable tracking by unwanted accessories, new design changes, and more. Here is a roundup of everything new coming to iPhones with the upcoming iOS 17.5 update:

App installation in the EU

iOS 17.5 Beta version 1, in the EU, enables support for installing apps directly from the developer website. Apple previously announced that iPhone users in the EU will soon be able to download and install apps directly from the websites and the functionality is now rolling out to select users with the latest beta version. This new feature will soon be available across the EU countries with public roll out of the iOS 17.5 update.

Disable accessories tracking

Last year, Apple and Google announced that both companies will work together to address the issue where a stalker uses accessories such as AirTags to track users. 9To5Mac is now reporting that Apple has added a new line of code into the FindMy app suggesting that the feature might roll-out soon, likely with the iOS 17.5 update.

According to the report, in the iOS 17.5 Beta version, Apple has added strings of code to the FindMy app that would allow iPhones to identify tracking accessories. It would allow identifying non-Apple accessories as well that are not certified for FindMy functionality and would allow users to disable them.

The report states that the feature is not enabled for beta users as of now, but is likely to become available with the official release of iOS 17.5.

Design changes

Apple has added minor design changes to the operating system with the iOS 17.5 beta version. Some of the changes include redesigned icons within the Apple Books app, changes to Podcast widget for homepage, and more.

Scathing federal report rips Microsoft for shoddy security, insincerity

Scathing federal report rips Microsoft for shoddy security, insincerity

In a scathing indictment of Microsoft corporate security and transparency, a Biden administration-appointed review board issued a report Tuesday saying a cascade of errors by the tech giant let state-backed Chinese cyber operators break into email accounts of senior US officials including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

The Cyber Safety Review Board, created in 2021 by executive order, describes shoddy cybersecurity practices, a lax corporate culture and a lack of sincerity about the company’s knowledge of the targeted breach, which affected multiple US agencies that deal with China.

It concluded that Microsoft’s security culture was inadequate and requires an overhaul given the company’s ubiquity and critical role in the global technology ecosystem. Microsoft products underpin essential services that support national security, the foundations of our economy, and public health and safety.

The panel said the intrusion, discovered in June by the State Department and dating to May was preventable and should never have occurred, blaming its success on a cascade of avoidable errors. What’s more, the board said, Microsoft still doesn’t know how the hackers got in.

The panel made sweeping recommendations, including urging Microsoft to put on hold adding features to its cloud computing environment until substantial security improvements have been made.

It said Microsoft’s CEO and board should institute rapid cultural change including publicly sharing a plan with specific timelines to make fundamental, security-focused reforms across the company and its full suite of products.

In a statement, Microsoft said it appreciated the board’s investigation and would continue to harden all our systems against attack and implement even more robust sensors and logs to help us detect and repel the cyber-armies of our adversaries.

In all, the state-backed Chinese hackers broke into the Microsoft Exchange Online email of 22 organisations and more than 500 individuals around the world including the US ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns accessing some cloud-based email boxes for at least six weeks and downloading some 60,000 emails from the State Department alone, the 34-page report said. Three think tanks and four foreign government entities, including Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre, were among those compromised, it said.

The board, convened by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in August, accused Microsoft of making inaccurate public statements about the incident including issuing a statement saying it believed it had determined the likely root cause of the intrusion when, in fact, it still has not. Microsoft did not update that misleading blog post, published in September, until mid-March after the board repeatedly asked if it planned to issue a correction, it said.

Separately, the board expressed concern about a separate hack disclosed by the Redmond, Washington, company in January this one of email accounts including those of an undisclosed number of senior Microsoft executives and an undisclosed number of Microsoft customers and attributed to state-backed Russian hackers.

The board lamented a corporate culture that deprioritised both enterprise security investments and rigorous risk management.

The Chinese hack was initially disclosed in July by Microsoft in a blog post and carried out by a group the company calls Storm-0558. That same group, the panel noted, has been engaged in similar intrusions compromising cloud providers or stealing authentication keys so it can break into accounts since at least 2009, targeting companies including Google, Yahoo, Adobe, Dow Chemical and Morgan Stanley.

Microsoft noted in its statement that the hackers involved are well-resourced nation state threat actors who operate continuously and without meaningful deterrence.

The company said it recognises that recent events have demonstrated a need to adopt a new culture of engineering security in our own networks, adding it has mobilised our engineering teams to identify and mitigate legacy infrastructure, improve processes, and enforce security benchmarks.
